Is The President The General Of The Army

Trump and Kim Jong-un seem eager to start a war that most of the world fears will lead to a nuclear disaster. Few would think that the top leaders in the two countries would even consider such a catastrophe. However, most Americans and North Koreans have no idea what goes on in their own military. So, is the president the general of the army? The answer is Yes and No. It depends on the country and the constitution. In most countries, the president is the commander in chief of the armed forces, but the power of his role varies from country to country. For example, in the United States, the president acts as the commander in chief, and in some countries like the UK, the Queen is the commander in chief. A countrys constitution dictates the role of the president and in some countries, theyre even barred from holding the position of the commander in chief..

The rank of General of the Armies is senior to General of the Army, and the rank by this name has been bestowed on only two officers in U.S. history. In 1919, John J. Pershing was promoted to General of the Armies for his services in World War I. In 1976, during the United States Bicentennial, George Washington was posthumously promoted to this rank for his service as the first commanding general of the United States Army. In 1903, retroactive to 1899, George Dewey was promoted to Admiral of the Navy, a rank equated to that of a five-star admiral. The promotion of Admiral Dewey is the only time an Admiral of the Navy has been named and the rank ceased to exist after his death.

Section 7 of Public Law 78-482 read: “Nothing in this Act shall affect the provisions of the Act of September 3, 1919 , or any other law relating to the office of General of the Armies of the United States.”

General of the Armies of the United States, more commonly referred to as General of the Armies, is the highest military rank in the United States Army. It has been conferred only twice: to John J. Pershing in 1919, as a personal accolade for his command of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I and to George Washington in 1976, as a posthumous honor during the United States Bicentennial celebrations.

The grade is sometimes speculated to be a six-star general, as being senior to the five-star grade of general of the Army, but no six-star insignia was ever officially created and Pershing, the only person to be General of the Armies during his own lifetime, never wore more than four stars. Whether Pershing’s grade should rank as four, five, or six stars has been a subject of debate ever since the five-star grades were created in 1944. To make Washington unambiguously the highest ranking Army officer in 1976, Congress specified that his new grade of General of the Armies ranked above all other grades of the Army, past or present.

Russian Army Will Cling To South Of Ukraine Putin Ready To Sacrifice Mobilized Ukraines General Staff Says

Thats what the difficult decisions that were previously mentioned by Sergey Surovikin, the new commander of the Russian occupation forces in Ukraine, could actually mean, Hromov said.

We do not rule it out, Hromov said.

You understand that they will not withdraw in full if they do so when the troops withdraw. The enemy can withdraw and leave the consripts to carry out the tasks of preventing the withdrawal of their troops, and move the most combat-capable personnel units in advance to the left bank of the Dnipro river.

Intelligence data indicate that the primary task for the Russian armed forces in the near future is to hold the front… The enemy plans to solve this task mostly through the first wave of mobilization and by increasing the number of Russian troops on the right bank of the Dnipro river, Hromov said.

As for the reasons why the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is so desperately clinging to the south of Ukraine, the main one is the land corridor to Ukraines Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula.

For Putins regime, the southern direction Kherson, Zaporizhzhya and Mykolaiv is strategically important from the point of view of preserving the land corridor to Crimea and the water supply of the peninsula, Hromov said.

On October 25, 1940, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. was appointed Brigadier General in the United States Army by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, becoming the first African American general in the history of the United States Military. Since then nearly 400 other African American women and men have been appointed to that rank. Five men have held the rank of General of the Army , George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, and Henry H. Arnold, who later became the only five-star general in the Air Force. The five-star rank is no longer attainable. In the Navy the top rank is Admiral followed by Vice Admiral , and Rear Admiral . In the Navy the rank of Fleet Admiral is rarely given. Only four men, William D. Leahy, Ernest J. King, Chester W. Nimitz, and William F. Halsey, Jr. have been named Fleet Admiral.

Listed below are African American men and women who have attained the rank of Admiral in the Navy or General in the Army or Air Force. No African American has yet attained the rank of General in the Marine Corps.

Equivalence With Admiral Of The Navy

After Trump comments, top Army general defends military’s leaders

On March 2, 1899, Congress created the grade of Admiral of the Navy to honor George Dewey for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay. Only Dewey ever held this grade, which is often treated as the United States Navy equivalent of General of the Armies, although the two grades never overlapped since Dewey died on January 16, 1917, two years before Pershing’s appointment.

Admiral of the Navy and General of the Armies were permanent grades awarded as personal accolades for past service, unlike the later ex officio ranks of admiral and general. Both grades carried the same annual pay of $13,500 for life, and the proposal to create more Admirals of the Navy in 1944 continued to tie their compensation to the General of the Armies.

After Dewey was mistakenly nominated to be an admiral in the Navy instead of Admiral of the Navy in 1899 and had to be renominated in 1903, the Navy carefully distinguished between Dewey’s grade and the rank of admiral that was held by the three fleet commanders from 1915, and the Chief of Naval Operations from 1916. The Army took similar care to distinguish between Pershing’s grade and the rank of general held by the chief of staff of the Army from 1929, after Pershing was mistakenly nominated to be a general in the Army instead of General of the Armies in 1919.

Who Are The Greatest Army Generals

Only about one percent of any given officer year group in the Army will make it to the level of general officer. Most of those who do will serve their time and retire without much notice by the general public. Even amongst those in the Army, most general officers are only known by those within their sphere of influence. Not until history steps in do general officers become famous for having perfected their craft. Even then only a small number of those generals seize the opportunity, distinguishing themselves above their peers.

Recently my uncle sent me an article by Michael Peck from back in June titled, The 5 Greatest U.S. Generals in History. Overall, the list isnt bad: George Washington, Winfield Scott, Ulysses S. Grant, George Marshall, and Matthew Ridgway. It could, however, be a lot better.

All five Peck selected have their own merits. Washington is a no-brainer. Hes the father of the country and should be on any list of great American strategic leaders. Scott invaded Mexico in 1847 in an amphibious operation that would not be bested for almost a hundred years. Grant rose above his personal issues to succeed in defeating the Confederacy and do his part to keep the country from being permanently ripped in two. George Marshall managed the growth of the Army into the world-class organization that it still is today. And Ridgway held the line in Korea after MacArthurs firing.
