High Council Of The Salvation Army
|
The High Council of The Salvation Army elects a new General in the event of a vacancy or prior to the retirement of the existing office holder. It can also remove a General who can no longer fulfill their duties. It is made up of the Chief of the Staff, all active Commissioners except the spouse of the General, and all active Territorial Commanders. It is not a governing body of the Salvation Army, and is regarded as having no continuity of existence between meetings.
Salvation Army Distributes 1000 Turkeys In Brooklyn
Holiday preparations are well underway for New Yorkers across the five boroughs including at Lauralee Charless home.
One is going to my house, and the other is going to my moms house, said the Brooklyn resident on Tuesday during a turkey distribution in Bushwick. This is so good for the community and for the people in need. It is a blessing for a lot of people. Times are hard, so it is helpful.
Edward Laureano made his way from the other side of town just to make sure he would have a turkey for his neighbor.
There are a lot of people that are in need, like my friend, said the Queens resident. I am glad they are doing this for the community. I know the Salvation Army does a lot of good work, so I hope this is going to help a lot of folks.
Hundreds of neighbors battled the cold and showed up in front of the Salvation Army Bushwick Corps Community Center. As families still deal with the aftermath of COVID-19 and food prices reach all-time highs, food distributions have become a lifeline for many New Yorkers.
Our goal is to meet the needs that families have, try to bridge the need with the help of our partners, so they can have food on the table, not only during the holidays but throughout the year, said Salvation Armys Lt. Clifford Douglas. For some, being able to have a turkey on Thanksgiving means everything.

Red Shield Appeal And Self

The Red Shield Appeal and Self-Denial Appeal are annual fundraising campaigns in some territories, such as the UK and Australia. Each year, officers, soldiers, employees and volunteers take to the streets worldwide to participate in door-to-door or street collections. The money raised is specifically channelled towards The Salvation Army’s social work in each respective territory. Within the territory defined by the United Kingdom and Ireland this collection is known as the Annual Appeal, and it often carries another name that the general public would more readily know in 2012 becoming The Big Collection.
As the popularity of the organisation grew and Salvationists worked their way through the streets of London attempting to convert individuals, they were sometimes confronted with unruly crowds. A family of musicians began working with the Army as their “bodyguards” and played music to distract the crowds. In 1891 a Salvation Army band attempted to parade and play music in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. This was in contravention of local by-laws and resulted in the arrest of 9 Salvationists. Unperturbed the Army continued to parade in defiance of the law, with the aim of gathering support for a change in legislation. Over the next few months the situation in the town escalated to such an extent that there were riots, and mounted police had to be called in from surrounding areas to try to maintain order.

How We Meet Local Needs
Assess the Need
FIRST, we assess the needs of each community in which we serve. We work to understand the obstacles, hardships, and challenges native to the area’s particular population.
Build the Programs
NEXT, we build local programs designed to offer immediate relief, short-term care, and long-term growth in the areas that will best benefit the community.
Invest in the Community
THEN, we offer the local programs to the local community, working to continually optimize their efficacy via spiritual, physical, and emotional service.

The Salvation Army Mission Statement

Australian Sex Abuse Cases
From the 1940s to the 1980s the Salvation Army in Australia sheltered approximately 30,000 children. In 2006 the Australian division of the Salvation Army acknowledged that sexual abuse may have occurred during this time and issued an apology. In it, the Army explicitly rejected a claim, made by a party unnamed in the apology, that there were as many as 500 potential claimants.
In 2013 it was reported that private settlements totalling A$15.5 million had been made in Victoria relating to 474 abuse cases a Salvation Army spokesman said that “This should not have happened and this was a breach of the trust placed in us” and that they were “deeply sorry” whilst claiming that the abuse was “the result of individuals and not a culture within the organisation”.
The Royal Commission published a case study report on the findings and recommendations for one of the above-mentioned case studies.

The Salvation Army Launches Annual Fundraising Campaign As Demand For Services Rise
HALIFAX, NS, Nov. 16, 2022 /CNW/ – With the ever-increasing cost of living, plus the added expenses of Christmas, The Salvation Army Maritime Division once again asks for the generous support of people across the Maritimes as they launch their largest fundraising effort of the year.
“The Salvation Army believes that everyone needs an army,” says Major Keith Pike, Leader of The Salvation Army Maritime Division, “and that’s what the Christmas Kettle Campaign is about. It provides us with the funds to ensure there is a toy under the tree for every child, and keeps our food banks ready as rising prices and inflation continue to drive families and individuals through our doors.”
Last year, The Salvation Army was able to assist over 180,000 individuals throughout the Maritimes. Across the nation though, The Salvation Army is reporting a 30 percent increase in families with children who need The Salvation Army’s help, with 31 percent of households served this year needing The Salvation Army’s help for the first time ever.
With a divisional campaign goal of $2,200,000, your donation can make a difference.
“It’s hard to capture the impact of a donation in words,” says The Salvation Army Maritime Division spokesperson, Lieutenant Gina Haggett. “A donation means a parent does not have to give up a meal so their child can eat. It means a senior does not have to chose between rent or eating that week.”
About The Salvation Army:
Salvation Army Angel Tree
The Salvation Army Angel Tree program kicked off on November 14. From now until December 13, donors can adopt the Angles, or local children in need, online at BeTheAngel.org or in person at various stores such as Great Clips, Big O Tires, and Arden Fair Mall. Donors will purchase gifts for children and return them as designated on their Angel Tree tag or per online instructions. The donated gifts are then distributed during a massive drive-thru event at Cal Expo on December 21.
In 2021, The Salvation Army provided meals to over 125,000 residents in Sacramento County and provided over 25,000 toys to children in need. This was made possible by the contributions of over 3,300 volunteers. The nonprofit needs at least that many volunteers again this year. Volunteers are needed to provide meals on Thanksgiving Day at the Center of Hope Emergency Shelter, pack food boxes, sort toys, help with the mega holiday assistance distribution at Cal Expo, collect donations at the iconic red kettles which will be placed at stores across the region leading up to Christmas, and more. This Christmas We Want To Reach Out To The People Who Are Suffering The Most By Bringing Joy And Hope Into Their Lives
With the current cost-of-living crisis, thousands of people are expected to turn to The Salvation Army for help this winter. In over 650 communities across the UK, we will be doing all we can for them, whatever their circumstances.
We want to be there for people who are facing poverty because they simply cant make ends meet. For the families struggling to feed their children. For the older people in our communities who have never felt as lonely as they do now. For the people who are homeless and trying to get back on their feet.
At The Salvation Army we put faith into action and offer compassion and practical help to vulnerable people across the UK going for difficult times. This winter, we will work hard to find suitable accommodation for people living on the street. We will reach out to older people suffering from loneliness and offer companionship. And for families struggling to put food on the table, we offer community food stores so parents can feed their children affordably again.
Please support our Christmas Appeal so we can support some of the most vulnerable people in society this winter.

Katherine Reid, left to right, Advisory Board Chair Chris Ayers, and Major Laura Leisher drop the first coins into the kettles on Tuesday during the Salvation Armys Red Kettle Kickoff breakfast at the Hilton Doubletree in Bloomington. The bell-ringing season begins Wednesday and continues through Christmas Eve.
Now more than ever, the Salvation Army needs everyones help, Leisher said. As the challenge continues, families and individuals in poverty are facing fears: Theyre afraid of hunger theyre afraid of eviction.
Were just amazed at how significant that was, Salvation Army Major Dan Leisher said. Before the COVID stuff, we had some online givers but not very many.

Who Can Be A General
The High Council established by William Booth in 1904 provided that âthe person so to be elected may be either one of the members of the High Council or some other personâ Since 1980 nominees must be Salvation Army officers. To date, no General has ever been elected without being a member of the High Council.

History Of Doughnut Day
In 1917, over 250 Salvation Army volunteers went overseas to France to provide supplies and baked goods, including doughnuts, to American soldiers. The women who served doughnuts to the troops fried them in soldiers’ helmets. They were known as “Doughnut Lassies” and are credited with popularising doughnuts in the United States.National Doughnut Day is now celebrated on the first Friday of June every year, starting in Chicago in 1938, to honour those who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
