As the European and Asian Middle Ages came to an end, the rank structure of post-classical armies became more formalized. The top officers were known as commissioned officers because their rank came from a royal commission. Army commissions were usually reserved for those of high staturethe aristocracy of mainland Europe and the aristocracy and gentry of Great Britain.
The basic unit of the post-classical army was the company, a band of soldiers assigned by a vassal lord on behalf of his lord . The vassal lord in command of the company was a commissioned officer with the rank of captain. Captain was derived from the Late Latin word capitaneus .
The commissioned officer assisting the captain with command of the company was the lieutenant. Lieutenant was derived from the French language the lieu meaning “place” as in a position and tenant meaning “holding” as in “holding a position” thus a “lieutenant” is somebody who holds a position in the absence of their superior. When he was not assisting the captain, the lieutenant commanded a unit called a platoon, particularly a more specialized platoon. The word is derived from the 17th-century French peloton, meaning a small ball or small detachment of men, which came from pelote, a ball.
Who Wears What And Why
Heres a breakdown of the insignia:
- Chevrons: Most enlisted personnel in every military service branch wear chevrons, or v-shaped stripes.
- Bars: Officers in the lower pay grades wear bars. Officers at the O-1 pay grade wear one gold bar, O-2 wear one silver bar, O-3 wear two silver bars and warrant officers wear striped bars.
- Oak leaves: Officers at the O-4 pay grade wear a gold oak leaf and officers at the O-5 pay grade wear a silver oak leaf.
- Eagles: Officers at the O-6 pay grade wear a silver eagle.
- Stars: Officers at the O-7 through O-10 pay grades wear one, two, three or four stars, respectively.

Military Ranks: Everything You Need To Know
Understanding military ranks can be tricky, especially when it comes to knowing the military ranks in order.
Some of the military services — the Army, Air Force and — have their own enlisted military rank structures the Coast Guard and Navy generally mirror each other and, as of late 2020, the Space Force relies on the Air Force rank system.
A service member’s military rank doesn’t just determine their level of responsibility, but also their pay. That’s why each service’s ranks are tied to paygrades in an “enlisted,” “warrant officer” and “officer” number system, written as the letters “E,” “W,” “O” and a number.
For example, the lowest military enlisted rank is “E-1,” while the highest military officer rank in use is “O-10.” While each service may call them something different, they all can be boiled down to “E” and “O.” The only rank names and abbreviations that are exactly the same across all services who use them are those for warrant officers.
These military ranks are displayed on service member uniforms through a series of symbols, such as chevrons, stripes, stars and bars.

What Are The Military Ranks
To learn the military ranks, you need to know what each service specifically calls the E and O levels, their abbreviations and how they look in the symbols, also known as insignias. For officers, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps symbols are largely the same, while the Navy and Coast Guard generally mirror each other.
The rank symbols can vary broadly for enlisted troops, with the Marine Corps and Army having many commonalities, and the Coast Guard and Navy again mirroring each other.

Army Ranks: Senior Non
Although the Army does not make the official distinction in the rank structure, enlisted ranks of sergeant first class and above generally are referred to as Senior NCOs, and they carry increasing levels of responsibility and demand greater levels of respect and deference.
Although there are only three pay grades, the SNCO ranks actually cover six separate ranks or designations — sergeant first class , master sergeant, first sergeant, sergeant major, command sergeant major and sergeant major of the Army.
Unlike the promotion processes for private through staff sergeant, unit commanders have little to do with the promotion process to the SNCO ranks. These promotions are centralized completely at the Headquarters of the Department of the Army .
There is no minimum time-in-grade requirement for promotion to the Army SNCO ranks, but candidates must meet the following minimum time-in-service requirements to be eligible for promotion:
- Sergeant first class — six years.
- Master sergeant/first sergeant — eight years.
- Sergeant major — nine years.

Army Attrition Above 15% As Units And Ranks Depleted By Quitting Soldiers
The armys attrition rate has risen above 15% and units and ranks are being severely depleted as more soldiers leave the Defence Force.
New figures for the armys attrition, obtained by the National Party, show that in the year to August 2022 the attrition rates was at 17.4%, significantly higher than the 7.9% forecast to June 2023, and leaving some army trades with 25% fewer staff.
Defence Minister Peeni Henare provided assurance the Defence Force remained capable of responding to emergencies. But Nationals defence spokesman Tim van de Molen said the attrition rates across the military required an urgent plan from the Government.
“There are some fundamental issues around the operational readiness of our defence, and if we don’t address this urgently, then we are going to struggle to deliver the outputs, he said.

The army attrition figures show certain trades within the army had a 12-month attrition rate greater than 25%: combat, combat engineer, and electronic warfare operator. Armoured combat specialists had a 33.5% attrition rate.
Certain ranks within the trades also had high attrition: more than 50% for privates in the armoured division, lance corporals in electronic warfare, and sergeants in the combat trade.
The highest attrition had occurred within the armys military police, with 62.7% attrition overall.

On 21 July 2014, the Indian Army issued a circular for retired personnel informing them that the correct form of addressing a retired officer is “Brigadier ABC and not Brigadier ABC”, the correct example is “Brigadier Sant Singh “. The stated rationale of army was, “Rank never retires, it is an officer who retires.” This form of address applies to both living and deceased officers.

An Infantry Regiment’s Storied History
As part of an effort to rename bases named for former Confederate officers, Fort Hood is scheduled to be renamed for Richard Cavazos, a four-star Army general of Mexican American descent.
Cavazos was renowned for his leadership during the Korean War, when he commanded the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers.
The 65th Regiment was unique because it was a segregated unit, the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the U.S. Army, said Noemi Figueroa Soulet, who produced a 2007 PBS documentary on the Borinqueneers and is the author of a new book on the famed unit as well.
The 65th Infantry regiment, which was formed in 1899, fought in both World Wars and Korea. The Borinqueneers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Barack Obama in 2014.
This unit was comprised primarily of Puerto Rican soldiers, along with continental officers, said Figueroa Soulet. Yet when I first started researching it, I could hardly find any archival material about them, even though they served with great distinction during the Korean War.
Prior to producing her film, Figueroa Soulet said that she had not really seen the stories of Latino soldiers being presented, in contrast to documentaries about the Tuskegee Airmen and popular films like Saving Private Ryan.
