What Happens If I Miss A Drill Weekend

Missed drill weekends have been a problem for the US Army since the beginning of the 20th century. This is a very common question that a lot of new soldiers ask. Usually, if a soldier misses a drill weekend, they will be given a variety of punishment options, which may include extra duty, confinement, restriction to the barracks, reduction in rank, extra drill, and reduction in pay. The amount of punishment a soldier receives depends on the reason they were absent. In some cases, if a member has had prior offenses or shows blatant disrespect, they may be given a punishment before they even leave the drill field. For example, if a soldier misses a drill weekend without a valid excuse, they may be confined to the barracks and given extra duty and drill. A soldier can also be confined to the barracks and given extra duty and drill if they arrive late to drill or arrive in civilian clothing..

Things You Should Know About My Active Guard And Reserve Family

About 5 years ago, this month, we were packing up for our first PCS in the Army Active Guard and Reserve program. My husband had been in the Reserves for several years at that point and was itching to go active duty. Well, the problem was going active duty from the reserves was easier said than done, so we decided AGR would be a good way to get his foot in the active duty door.

Being an AGR family means your soldier is a reserve or National Guard soldier who is active duty. Now, being active duty as a reserve soldier doesnt automatically mean an overseas deployment. While most reserve soldiers have civilian jobs to pay the bills, AGR soldiers work full-time for the Army on top of drilling with the rest of the soldiers at that particular unit. AGR soldiers, along with civilian and Department of Defense employees are the people that keep things functioning on a day-to-day basis at reserve units throughout the country.

Though, we are still fairly new to the AGR lifestyleonly having PCSed 3 timesI have learned a few things along the way I wish active duty families knew about us:

We will more than likely NEVER be stationed at amazing overseas locations, like Germany or Japan. As much as we want it and as amazing as it would be, Germany will likely never happen for us. There are a few AGR positions overseas, but not many.

Is your family part of the Active Guard and Reserves? What would you add to the list?

National Guard And Reserve Commitment

CBP strongly supports its employees that have a national guard or reserve commitment. In fact, CBP employees whose appointment is not limited to one year are entitled to time off from their federal position, at full pay, to perform certain types of active or inactive duty in the Reserves or National Guard. Return to your job, as if you never left.

CBP employees who complete their national guard/reserve commitments are covered under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act . USERRA protects service members’ reemployment rights when returning from a period of service in the uniformed services, to include:

  • Promotions and Grade Increases: Employees are entitled to receive within-grade increases and career ladder promotions at the same time they normally would have had they not been serving their military commitment.
  • Accrual of Benefits: Military duty is counted as covered service with CBP for eligibility, vesting, and benefit accrual purposes.
  • Retirement Plans: Returning service members are treated as if they had been continuously employed regardless of the type of retirement plan the employer has adopted.
  • Reemployment by Seniority: Returning service members are to be reemployed in the job that they would have attained had they not been absent for military service, with the same seniority, status and pay, as well as other rights and benefits determined by seniority within the required time limits.

National Guard And Military Reserves Explained

What Is The Army Reserves? | The Basics

The National Guard and Reserve fill vital roles in the U.S., augmenting the active-duty military services and filling specific needs nationwide. But how is the Guard and Reserve different from the regular military?

Active-duty military members work in the military full time, while regular Guard members and Reservists typically serve on a part-time basis. Both reservists and Guard members can serve on active-duty orders, known as Active Guard Reserve , or be deployed based on need.

What Is The Difference Between Guard And Reserve Service

Each branch of the military has a reserve component whose main purpose is to have trained units available for active duty as needed.

The National Guard includes the Army National Guard and Air National Guard in each state, U.S. territory and the District of Columbia. National Guard units typically are controlled by the state, but they can be activated for federal duty and deployed.

Both Reserve and Guard units train, as known as drill, about one weekend a month plus two weeks a year for “annual training.” Guard and Reserve members must serve a certain number of hours each year to make a “good year” to qualify for benefits and retirement.

What Is The National Guard

The National Guard consists of two branches: the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.

Each U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia has its own National Guard forces, funded through that entitys budget. The primary job of the National Guard is to defend the location to which it belongs and respond to state disasters and needs, such as earthquakes, floods or pandemics. The National Guard of any given location can also be federalized, receiving federal funding and responding in support of federal needs. That means National Guard units might deploy in support of overseas operations.

Can You Quit Army Reserves

Army Reserves Explained

In the United States, you can quit the reserves. As a matter of fact, I have a friend who used to have a military career who told me he left the reserves. According to him, nowadays, the military is a very demanding job that takes a lot of your time and personal life. You cant just leave the military, you have to formally resign from it by writing a letter to the captain of your unit. Signing up for the military is a big decision. It is a life-changing commitment, so you have to be certain as to whether or not you want to join before you do. If you change your mind, you can back out of the job. But, you cant quit at any time. You must do it appropriately..

What Role For The Army Reserve And National Guard

The Quadrennial Defense Reviews recommended cuts of 45,000 Army reservists appear appropriate for the current security environment and constitute an important aspect of reducing the $20 billion or greater annual budget shortfall that the Pentagon will acutely feel starting in the next decade. Indeed, even if all of the QDRs recommendations are adopted, the Pentagon will still face a significant budget problem. The onus is therefore on those who would not make these cuts to argue for a larger defense spending topline or suggest other specific cuts in the Pentagons budget.

THE ARMY RESERVE COMPONENT IN PERSPECTIVE

In todays U.S. military, Army reservists are larger than the active force. That fact is in stark contrast to the situation in the other services, where the reserve component is in all cases less than half as big as the active component. Army Reserve and National Guard personnel represent almost two-thirds of all reservists, and elicit the most debate in current defense policy. For that reason, my testimony focuses primarily on these Army forces. They are made up of nearly 370,000 National Guard personnel and 215,000 Army Reserve personnel . Their total annual budget of about $9 billion is nearly equal to that of the Marine Corps. Most specifically, this testimony focuses on the National Guards combat units, which today include more total brigade equivalents than the active Army.

Active Duty Vs Reserve Or National Guard

What is the difference between someone who is active duty military and someone who is in the Reserve or National Guard?

A person who is active duty is in the military full time. They work for the military full time, may live on a military base, and can be deployed at any time. Persons in the Reserve or National Guard are not full-time active duty military personnel, although they can be deployed at any time should the need arise.

    Do Reserves Get Deployed

Do Army Reserves Get Paid For Training

Reserve forces are the military entities that are not assigned to a specific combatant command. There are several specific types of Reserves forces. For example, the Army National Guard of the United States are one of these forces. They are multi-service forces which are under the complete jurisdiction of the federal government. Their existence dates back to the American Revolutionary War where they were created to be the land forces that would help the regular armies of the day. Today, most of these individuals are in some sort of uniform, ready to be deployed in the case of natural disasters like hurricane Katrina. The Reserves are all part of the Active Reserves, with some individuals based in the Reserve component. They are different from the National Guard Reserves in that they are part of the National Guard of the United States, but do not constitute one of the reserve components of the Armed Forces of the United States..
