Warrant Officer Basic Course – 255A

Warrant Officer Basic Course is the technical training program a newly appointed U.S. ArmyWarrant Officer receives after attending Warrant Officer Candidate School. WOBC is designed to certify warrant officers as technically and tactically competent to serve in a designated military occupation specialty. WOBC is the first major test a newly appointed officer must pass to continue serving in the Army as a warrant officer, as WO1 appointments and award of a Warrant Officer MOS are contingent upon successfully completing WOBC.

Upon graduating Warrant Officer Candidate School, 151As now attend a 19 week course of instruction in the 128th Aviation Brigade at Fort Eustis which includes the WOBC and AMOC requirements taught at Fort Rucker as well as ensuring that all 151As are armament trained. Although WOBC has been extended from 9 to 19 weeks, the deletion of redundant training reduced the total time that students have to be in training by 4 weeks. This resulted in a projected savings of $6.8 million in the first three years of implementation.

    WOBC is held at multiple locations throughout the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. For example, Signal WOBC is taught at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Aviation WOBC is taught at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and other WOBCs are taught at installations such as Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Lee, Virginia, and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

    Chief Warrant Officer Five David L. Ward was appointed Tennessees 6th Command Chief Warrant Officer on April 1, 2021. CW5 Ward serves as the principle Warrant Officer advisor to the Adjutant General and the Land Component Commander for the supervision, training and wellbeing of all Tennessee Army National Guard Warrant Officers.

    CW5 Ward joined the Army in 1985, serving three years as an Equipment Records and Parts Specialist, and finished his first term of service with the 18th Airborne Corps at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Upon leaving active duty in 1988, CW5 Ward joined the South Carolina Army National Guards 1-263d Armor Regiment in Mullins, S.C. where he served for sixteen years and rose from the rank of Specialist to Chief Warrant Officer Two. He transferred to the Tennessee Army National Guard in 2004 where he served in various command and staff positions to include: Detachment Commander, 730th QM CO Senior Maintenance Technician, 176th Maintenance BN and G4 Maintenance Manager. He has also served at JFHQ as the Senior Maintenance Officer and the Senior Supply Systems Officer. He has managed FMS # 16 in Smyrna, TN CSMS-East in Knoxville, TN and FMS # 10 in Columbia, TN. In 2007, CW5 Ward deployed with the 730th Quartermaster Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    CW5 Ward is a native of Tabor City, North Carolina, and currently resides on his farm in Culleoka, Tennessee with his wife of twenty-four years Jennifer.

    Youll need to apply to and pass Warrant Officer Candidate School held in Fort Rucker, Alabama, which will test your technical and physical skills. Upon graduation, youll be sent to your specific U.S. Army branch school where youll receive more focused technical training in your specialty.

    Criminal Investigation Branch Warrant Officer Candidates

    As a general rule, warrant officer candidates transition from a lower to a higher rank, e.g. from Sergeant to Warrant Officer One. However, the Criminal Investigation Division of the US Armys Military Police Corps enables commissioned officers from any military occupational specialty to apply to become a CID Special Agent through the Army-wide Commissioned Officer to Warrant Officer Programme . Qualified enlisted personnel can also apply.

    Minimum eligibility requirements for MOS 311A :

    • At least 21 years old
    • ST score 107 or better
    • GT score 110 or better
    • 12 months or more to ETS
    • Secret or Top Secret security clearance
    • PHYC of A or B and PULHES of 111221 or better
    • Not flagged or barred to reenlist and
    • 124 SH or more .

    Training For Special Forces Candidates

    Since August 2006, Special Forces warrant officer candidates have undertaken their training via the Special Forces Warrant Officer Technical and Tactical Certification course delivered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina .

    The purpose of SFWOTTC is to Educate, train and technically certify candidates for MOS 180A in operational and tactical requirements for planning and executing special operations worldwide. Newly appointed WOs primarily serve as Assistant Detachment Commanders for a SFOD-A. .

    Prior to the implementation of the WOTTC, the typical training timeline, to include completing the WOBC specific to Special Forces, was 29 to 53 weeks. It was not until Special Forces soldiers graduated from the WOBC that they could receive additional Special Forces training or perform as part of an operational detachment. The WOTTC served to cut the training timeline in half, to 11 to 27 weeks .

    The US Army Recruiting Command is led by a Major General , with its HQ located at Fort Knox, Kentucky. It is a sub-organisation of TRADOC.

    USAREC is responsible for processing warrant officer applications and conducting accession boards in order to fill the US Armys ranks with the technical experts that reside within the warrant officer cohort.

    Us Army Aviation Centre Of Excellence

    Fort Rucker, named US Army Aviation Centre of Excellence in 2008, serves as the HQ for US Army aviation. USAACE is led by a Major General and is located at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

    While the garrison command manages the daily operations of the Fort Rucker community, the HQ aviation branch develops, coordinates and deploys aviation operations, training and doctrine. The USAACE is part of USACAC.

    The staff also supports USAACE subordinate units in executing command initiatives to include aviation office, warrant officer, NCO and enlisted training, leader development and education, aviation force development, and the development and integration of army aviation capabilities.

    The USAACE also hosts various army tenant organisations, for example the US Armys Warrant Officer Career College.

    In 1971, the U.S. Army, the United States Navy, and the United States Air Force began training a new type of health care provider called a physician assistant/associate . PA was exactly the type of medical provider I wanted to be, and I applied, and was accepted into the sixth of the Armys first eight PA classes.     Warrant Officers: What They Are And What They Do

    Warrant officers are usually functionally orientated, possessing a high degree of specialisation in a particular field. This is in contrast to commissioned officers who have a more general assignment pattern, however, they can lead and direct soldiers the same as other officers .

    As such warrant officers can:

    • Command aircraft, maritime vessels, and special units.
    • Provide quality advice, counsel, and solutions to support their unit/organisation.
