What Is The Simultaneous Membership Program

JOINING AT AN OLDER AGE | US ARMY | ARMY RESERVE | NATIONAL GUARD

The simultaneous membership program is a unique program offered by the Reserve and National Guard. It allows a college-bound member of the Reserve or National Guard who is already assigned or has enlisted in an Army National Guard unit to enroll simultaneously in an Reserve Officer Training Corps program. SMPs enter the Army’s Advanced ROTC program while at the same time serving in their unit as a cadet.

This on-the-job training was designed to relieve a shortage of junior officers in the Army National Guard. If you participate in the SMP, you continue to serve and draw monthly and annual training pay while you are in the ROTC. Additionally, Army ROTC cadets receive a $200 monthly stipend.

An SMP cadet performs the duties of a second lieutenant under the supervision of a commissioned officer. The requirements for this program are that you must be 30 years of age or younger, attend college full time and be in good physical shape.

The SMP is offered only on campuses where an Army ROTC program exists — or if you participate in an Army ROTC program at a nearby college or university. If you try SMP, you still will attend ROTC Advance Camp during the summer between your junior and senior year.

Does The Army Change Your Personality

People lower in agreeableness, neuroticism, and openness to experience during high school were more likely to enter the military after graduation. In addition, military training was associated with changes in personality. Compared with a control group, military recruits had lower levels of agreeableness after training.

Joining The Army Reserve

The citizen soldiers of the Army Reserve have a dual mission: helping communities and supporting the regular Army forces. The Army Reserve is open to newcomers as well as those with previous military service in any other branch.

Army ROTC

From the boardroom to the field, Army ROTC will help you discover the leader within, pay for college and secure a job after graduation.

Through ROTC, the Army offers merit-based scholarships in addition to a monthly allowance for living expenses. There is no military commitment for at least the first year in ROTC. So students can feel free to take a course and see whether becoming an Army officer is right for them. The leadership and management training ROTC provides can serve as the foundation for future success in either a military or civilian career. Visit Army ROTC for more information.

Earned college credit — You can attend college and serve in the Army Reserve at the same time. Many schools grant college credits for military training and experience.

The Minimum Age Permitted To Join The Military

In all cases except for the Navy Reserve, the minimum age permitted is 17 with parental consent in writing. Those 18 and older are permitted to join the military without parental consent. The Navy Reserve minimum age is 18. Federal law says no military branch can enlist someone over the age of 42 however each service may set their own policy below that age limit.

Did you know there is an upper age limit for all branches of military service?

Military Age Limits:

  • Army Age Limit: 35 for active duty, Guard, and Army Reserve
  • Navy Age Limit: 39 for active duty, 39 for Navy Reserve
  • Air Force Age Limit: 39 for active duty and Guard, 38 for Air Force Reserve
  • Coast Guard Age Limit: 31 for active duty, 40 for Coast Guard Reserve
  • Space Force Age Limit: 39

Prior service military members may not be subject to the same age limitations as new recruits depending on age, the nature of military service, recruiting demand, and other factors.

How Much Time Do I Need To Commit To The Army Reserve

Local Reserve units generally meet weekly and these contribute toward the 27 days per year training requirement. Other training takes place over weekends and an annual two-week training camp.

Those with specialist skills may consider joining a national unit, for example as a cyber expert or a medical professional. Specialist units tend to have a lower annual training camp commitment of 19 days per year and may not have weekly ‘drill’ nights.

Will I Deploy On Operations

Reservists regularly deploy and serve alongside the Regular Army on operations worldwide.

Since the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, there are fewer tours available and the British Army will only compulsorily mobilise Reservists in times of extreme need but there are still plenty of opportunities for voluntary mobilisation on humanitarian and peacekeeping operations and particularly for those with specialist skills.

Guidance on gov.uk states: “You or your employer can object if it would seriously adversely affect your family or work responsibilities”. This can either result in a deferment, an exemption or cancellation of mobilisation.

WHAT IS THE AGE REQUIREMENT TO JOIN THE ARMY, ARMY RESERVE OR ARMY NATIONAL GUARD?

Some over-50s will be able to join the army reserve in a drive by the Ministry of Defence to increase the number of recruits.

The upper age limit for former regular army soldiers has been raised from 43 to 52 and the limit for former commissioned officers is now 57 rather than 35. The changes have been made to reflect the demographics and health of the population, and consequently widens the potential recruitment pool, according to the MoD.

There were an additional 590 recruits to the army reserve in the year to October compared with the previous 12 months, bringing the total to 3,840.

However, attrition meant the total number of reservists rose by just 20 to 19,310 despite a multimillion-pound television and online advertising campaign to attract more recruits to the three armed forces reserves.

David Cameron has pledged to raise the number of reservists to 30,000 in the next four years as the regular army continues to shed soldiers. It has fallen by 8,000 to just over 94,000.

An MoD spokesperson said: We make no apology for revising the age requirements for ex-regular soldiers to join the reserves and share their wealth of knowledge and expertise. All recruits have to meet strict fitness requirements, or could face discharge.

We have always recognised that reinvigorating our reserve forces would not be achieved overnight. However, one year into our five-year plan we are making steady progress and seeing increased numbers joining the reserves, he said.
