The United States Military Occupation Code

Using a Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) Code on careers.mountsinai.org

MOS codes have changed over the years. During World War II, MOS codes were four digits long and generally listed the recruits profession in the civilian world. With the armed forces expanding so quickly, it was critical to understand what each soldiers capabilities were or if they had prior military experience so they could be appropriately assigned. However, the system was imperfect. Similar trades were not grouped together, so without a manual, it was difficult to know what any individual code meant. This was improved after WW2 when MOS codes changed to be between 3 and 5 digits. The first two digits of a service members code stood for the field code, the third for their sub-specialty, and the fourth, after a period, their job title. Sometimes, a fifth digit was included if the service member had an SQI . However, if the individual had no specialized training, this number was often either omitted or left as a zero. An example: 11 is the code for infantry and 1.1 the sub-specialty for light weapons. 111.10 is, therefore, the MOS for an infantryman with no specialized training. Since 7 is the SQI for airborne training, 111.17 signifies an airborne-qualified paratrooper.

The system was later changed again in 1965. The codes changed to be different for enlisted servicemembers and NCOs, warrant officers, and commissioned officers.

A United States military occupation code, or a military occupational specialty code , is a nine-character code used in the United States Army and United States Marine Corps to identify a specific job. In the United States Air Force, a system of Air Force Specialty Codes is used. In the United States Navy, a system of naval ratings and designators are used along with the Navy Enlisted Classification system. A system of ratings is also used in the United States Coast Guard.

Since an individual can obtain multiple job specialties, a duty military occupational specialty is used to identify what their primary job function is at any given time. An individual must complete and pass all required training for their military occupational specialty qualification .

WHAT ARE MILITARY OCCUPATION CODES AND SPECIALTIES?

While in the military, a service members profession is categorized into Military Occupational Codes or Specialties . These codes classify specific professions in the Armed Forces, with each branch using its own specific coding system:

  • United States Army uses MOC
  • United States Marine Corps uses MOC
  • United States Air Force uses a system of AFSC
  • United States Navy uses a system of naval ratings and designations along with the NEC system
  • United States Coast Guard uses system of ratings

In order to obtain a military occupational specialty, an individual must complete and pass all required training to receive the qualification. As each service member can obtain multiple specialties, a duty military occupational specialty is used to indicate the individuals primary role.

Although specific to the military, employers can use these MOC and MOS designations to qualify veteran candidates for civilian roles of similar capacities.
