The Application Process Is Pretty Straightforward

Enrolling in the PreCheck program is pretty streamlined, though it’s certainly a good idea to get it out of the way well before you plan to travel. There’s a five-minute online application through the Transportation Security Administration’s website, and your spouse will have to book an appointment at one of the 380 or so enrollment centers around the country. Your spouse will need to provide fingerprints to support a background check, as well as undergo a 10-minute in-person interview at the enrollment center. The program is open to all American citizens and green card holders, though there are a number of potential disqualifications for people with a history of transportation-related offenses or violent crime.

Its a common question: If I have TSA PreCheck, does my wife or husband need it? The answer is yes. If you have TSA PreCheck on your boarding pass and your spouse doesnt, or vice versa, you cannot go through the TSA PreCheck lane together. Period.

If one of you is enrolled in TSA PreCheck and the other is not, you have two choices:

• Go through the regular screening lane together.

• Go through security separately, with only the TSA PreCheck member using the expedited screening lane.

Why would you go through the TSA PreCheck lane without your spouse? Besides bragging rights, theres a good reason: The TSA PreCheck member can ease the burden for the non-PreCheck member by bringing electronics and other awkward items, like child strollers, through security more easily. But the TSA PreCheck member can’t bring a second quart-size bag of approved 3-1-1 liquids through security since theres a limit of one liquids bag per passenger.

If youve heard anecdotes about non-PreCheck members getting the TSA PreCheck logo when traveling with a partner whos a member, they probably werent lying. TSA works in mysterious ways. But chances are you wont be as lucky, so dont expect it. If, by some mysterious stroke of luck, your non-PreCheck-member spouse gets the logo on their boarding pass, it means you can go through together.

How about other family members do military dependents get TSA Precheck? The answer is the same as for spouses, though there are exceptions for those 12 and under. TSA PreCheck for military dependents includes benefits for these younger children, as long as theyre traveling with the service member. In this case, the child will be able to use TSA PreChecks expedited screening as well.

So how else do you get TSA PreCheck as a military dependent? Well, you can sign up for it the same way as everyone else by applying for the program and paying the $78 application fee.
