Salvation Army Day Camp In East Harlem A Victim Of The Tough Economy
NEW YORK — Hundreds of children will have nowhere to go after a neighborhood summer camp was canceled at the the last minute.
Jacob DeJesus had big plans for this summer. However, the gym he would have played ball in and the classrooms normally used for activities all sit empty, after a Salvation Army day camp in East Harlem went dark for the first time in 24 years.
“I wanted to play, have fun in summer camp,” DeJesus told CBS 2’s Sean Hennessey.
Earl Foster of the Salvation Army said besides programs at the community center, kids go to Great Adventure, the aquarium, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Coney Island and the Central Park Zoo. He blamed the tough economy for the situation.
“It’s very sad,” Foster said. “We’ve never had such a financial problem before.”
Camp directors have made pleas to congressional offices and City Council agencies. While they found a sympathetic ear, they didn’t find enough cash for the camp.
“I was like ‘wow, what am I supposed to do now?'” mother Maribel DeJesus said. “I went to several places and no slots. It was too late.”
Kim Sampson said she has three kids in summer camp and knows all about its value.
“Enrichment, activities, a safe environment and it would just be bad for any parent that has to go to work and do things in the daytime,” she said.
“I stay home, do nothing except watch TV and play games, play with my toys,” DeJesus said.

Different Types Of Camps
Our summer camps are designed with a specific age or interest in mind. For example, The Salvation Army is known throughout the world for its music camps, where musicians of all abilities learn to play and excel. We also have teen camps featuring organized sports and programs designed to help young adults navigate the challenging years ahead. Our younger campers, who participate in character-building ministries in their hometown, are invited to attend camp to learn new skills while earning emblems.
Other camps are highly specialized and deal with unique and sensitive situations. For instance, a camp called PAL in Missouri helps kids referred by the juvenile courts to refocus their lives and get to know law enforcement officials as people who care about their community. There are many short-term camps for those who are in Salvation Army rehabilitation programs working at overcoming their addictions. In these places of quiet and beauty, they engage in honest reflection and many experience a spiritual rebirth that helps give them the strength they need to start over.

Salvation Army Offers Kids Summer Camp
A summer day camp and sleep away camp are offered to children in Gaston and Lincoln counties by The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is an international Christian charitable organization that works all year in their local community to provide services such as food, shelter, and financial services to those in need in more than 130 countries.
The Salvation Armys first camp is a day camp at The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Lowell. This program operates all summer long Monday through Friday to provide kids from 6 to 15 years old a safe and fun place to spend the summer for $80 per week. These children take weekly field trips such as exploring the local science center, taking swim safety lessons, or simply spending a day at the lake. This summer, the organization planned more than 30 local field trips.
There is also a full week of Vacation Bible School during the summer, where they have time to play games and spend time outside.
Their second camp, Camp Walter Johnson, is a week-long free sleep away camp for kids aged 6 to 17 years old. Located on High Rock Lake in Denton, this camp has housed more than 55,000 school-aged children and youth since it opened in 1974.
Camp Walter Johnson allows children to build friendships and spend time in nature, while also participating in Bible study and other worship. They may participate in hiking, paddle boating, or the camps ropes course.
For many youths, these camps are their vacations, said Phelps.

Salvation Army Still Has Spots Open For Summer Camp
In this file photo, a group kids at the Salvation Army load up on the bus to go gift shopping with volunteer Jennie Lynn Johnson, on Monday Dec. 20, 2021.
TUPELO The local Salvation Army is looking for 30 additional campers for its annual regional camp.
Each year, the Salvation Army Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Division hosts Camp Hidden Lake, a 300-acre camp in Lexington that provides a traditional summer camp experience for thousands of children from ages 6 to 17. Five camps take place from June 13 to July 23, focusing on adventure, music, and STEAM .
Despite camp registration opening in mid-May, 30 of the Salvation Army of Tupelos camper slots are still open, said Salvation Army of Tupelo Captain Heather Dolby.
The goal of the camps is to provide a summer camp experience where they come to know God better, they can make good friends, and they can have fun just being a kid, Dolby said.
For a lot of our children, they are oftentimes in situations that require them to grow up fast, and certainly across the board over the last two years in the pandemic, Dolby said. Being able to come to camp gives them an opportunity to socialize and build that social experience that a lot of kids have been missing.
Staff are thoroughly background checked and trained with strict protocols around child safety and child vulnerability, Dolby said.
You got to continue that journey with people that you were campers with, Perkins said.

During the month of July, the Salvation Army Newburgh Corps Community Center celebrated the return of Star Lake Camp and were able to bring children from the local community to a fun and memorable week of camp.
First founded in 1923, Star Lake Camp, located in Bloomingdale, NJ, has allowed the Salvation Army to provide kids from all over the New York State region to come and enjoy the great outdoors, learn new skills and to meet and make new friends. The summer camp returned after a two-year hiatus due to the current COVID pandemic.
Three camp sessions were made available for the children to attend during the course of three weeks.
The kids from Newburgh experienced Adventure Camp, STEM Camp and the Sports Camp. Each session would start Monday and end on the Friday of that week.
On the morning of the trips departure, nine new campers, with packed suitcases and smiles on their faces, shuffled into the Salvation Army Newburgh travel van, ready to head off for a week of fun and adventure at Star Lake Camp. Several parents of this years campers had attended Star Lake Camp as children and were excited to send their children to camp and hoped they would have a good experience like they did.
Im just excited for the kids, they have an opportunity to go to camp, Ross said. Theyre going to be swimming, theyre going to be boating, theyre going to be doing ropes courses and climbing the rock wall.
