The Salvation Army Homeless Shelter

How We Meet Local Needs

Salvation Army prepares cold weather shelters for the homeless

Assess the Need

FIRST, we assess the needs of each community in which we serve. We work to understand the obstacles, hardships, and challenges native to the area’s particular population.

Build the Programs

NEXT, we build local programs designed to offer immediate relief, short-term care, and long-term growth in the areas that will best benefit the community.

Invest in the Community

THEN, we offer the local programs to the local community, working to continually optimize their efficacy via spiritual, physical, and emotional service.

The Salvation Army will deliver 400 meal plates with the traditional Thanksgiving spread. Last year they did the same thing, however they have fewer plates this year because there were a lot of leftovers last year, Hongee said.

The teams also will deliver some food plates to specific locations where many homeless stay.

Hongyee said mayors have been given flyers for the outreach event in hopes people who are homeless will head to the mayors offices to grab a free plate.

Hongyee said if there are any plates after they have completed the village routes and mayors offices, the organization will give them to the homeless shelters.

Before the pandemic, the Salvation Army used to host an annual Thanksgiving feast at CHamoru village.

I think the community is ready to have it at CHamoru village, but we are just cautious. Hopefully next year we can have a big event, said Hongyee.

Addressing Systemic Racism And Larger Shelter Needed: Pastiwet

Salvation Army in La Crosse fights to end the stigma around ...

Pastiwet said there were supports when he was spiralling but “the addiction was too strong.” More services are needed in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, he said.

“Some of us can’t get access to and some of us have the language barrier and I think a lot of us are scared to be laughed at,” Pastiwet said, adding that governments need to address systemic racism in the court, justice and social services systems.

Pastiwet also said Happy Valley-Goose Bay needs a bigger facility with more help for people in need, like him.

“They’re gonna know that somebody’s there to care, caring, and I think that would take a long way to getting that self-pride back,” Pastiwet said.

Pastiwet said federal, provincial and local governments also need to work with Indigenous communities and leadership to restore the connection to culture for all Indigenous peoples.

“My ancestors were nomadic people that travel on land, that travel wherever the caribou went and there was no sickness, they were healthy. There was no diabetes,” Pastiwet said. “I was raised on the land with my grandparents and there were no worries there.”

He said that changed when churches and governments forced them to live in specific locations, like Davis Inlet, where there was no running water or sewer.

“We need to educate our children as well through culture, because it’s important,” he said. “Very, very important.”

A captain here at the shelter says they want to encourage anyone who needs a warm safe space to use the service instead of trying to brave the elements.

The warming stations are there, especially for those without homes.

You know Im 60 some people in that age cant take the cold,” said homeless veteran Vernon Wilson. “It can pretty much kill some people that have heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Spokane Hires Salvation Army To Operate Homeless Shelters

Spokane has chosen a new operator for two of its homeless shelters just weeks after fraud allegations against one of the former operators employees became public.

During a special meeting Thursday, the City Council approved two contracts with the Salvation Army to run the citys Cannon Street and Trent Avenue shelters. The Salvation Army will take over operations from the Guardians Foundation on Nov. 1. Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward declared an emergency so the city could bypass competitive bidding requirements and approve the contract quicker.

The hasty switch to a new operator comes after the mayors office in late September learned that a Guardians Foundation employee may have embezzled between $100,000 and $1 million.

It isnt clear if any of the missing dollars are Spokane taxpayer funds. The Spokane Police Department is investigating the incident, and the city is conducting an audit.

Spokane had two multimillion dollar contracts with the Guardians Foundation.

In September 2021, the City Council approved a $1.9 million contract with the organization to run the 72-bed Cannon Street shelter through June. The council later extended that contract through the end of 2022 for an additional $1 million.

The City Council in August approved a $6.6 million contract with the Guardians Foundation to operate the new Trent Resource and Assistance Center through 2023.

Salvation Army Calls For People To Get Off Social Media And Help

The Happy Valley-Goose Bay Salvation Army is one of the community organizations working to help people in the short term with meals and basic necessities.

It has received funds through Reaching Home Indigenous N.L. to operate a community needs van and have an outreach worker to help those in need on the trails. Maj. Byron Kean said more needs to be done to understand how someone becomes homeless.

“It’s working with them, sitting down with them and allowing them to speak into the situation that they find themselves in,” Kean said. “And it’s heartbreaking when you consider it, to hear about the trauma, the addictions, the mental health issues that they’re facing.”

Kean said it’s going to be a difficult winter if some issues aren’t addressed.

“It’s not putting a rant on social media. Social media to me is something that’s holding us back because it’s creating a situation where these individuals are being more stigmatized than they already have been,” Kean said.

“It’s time to get off of social media and to actually be a part of the solution,” he said. “We all have a part to play.”
