What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

Still time to donate to Red Kettle
Contributions to The Salvation Armys Red Kettle campaign are still lagging behind last years rate of donations. Through Nov. 25, the campaign had garnered a total of $271,032, about 10 percent behind last years pace.
Of the total, nearly $95,000 has been donated directly to the 60 Red Kettles stationed around the Des Moines metro. The balance has been given through the mail, online and by telephone.
Its still too early to get a good feel for the overall campaign, said Arvid Huisman, development and communications director for the Salvation Army in Des Moines, in a press release. This is my seventh Red Kettle campaign and each one has started out differently. Des Moines is a generous community and by the end of the campaigns we have met our goal or have come very close.
Red Kettle bell ringing began Nov. 8 and continues through Christmas Eve. The mail and online portion of the campaign continues into January.
The Red Kettle campaign is the Salvation Armys biggest fundraising event of the year.
Contributions can be mailed to P.O. Box 933 in Des Moines, 50304, or made by credit card at 800-725-2769 or salvationarmy-desmoines.org.
Bell ringers are still needed. Volunteers can sign up at ringdesmoines.org or by calling 243-7464.
