Slight Increase Reported With Wichitas Homeless Count
WICHITA, Kan. – An annual survey conducted at the beginning of 2022 shows about 100 more people are experiencing homelessness in Wichita.
While the increase in Wichitas homeless population has been gradual, its a situation that impacts some businesses, especially in the downtown area.
For more than a decade, Idle Hands Tattoo has operated in Wichitas Delano neighborhood. Matt Eli welcomes more foot traffic hes seen over the past three to four years, but hes also noticed a rise in the areas homeless population.
The homeless population has really flocked to this area, he said. They used to be just across the street in the park, but the last couple of years, theyve been moving on towards our businesses, checking cars, scaring customers.
Its a situation, Eli said, thats made some customers and employees in Delano feel unsafe.
The United Way of the Plains conducts an annual survey, the point-in-time count. On Feb. 25, that count found 690 people in Wichita identified as homeless, mostly men older than 24. That includes people who were in emergency shelters, transitional housing, safe havens or living on the streets or in cars. The total is a gradual increase from the last couple of years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the survey wasnt completed in 2021.
With a call to 2-1-1, a United Way operator can connect the caller to resources. There is also a resource guide which is updated every quarter.

Homeless Shelters
For those with no place to go or in need of emergency shelter, local Salvation Army homeless shelters provide a warm, safe place for men, women, and whenever possible families to stay. In cities where we do not operate homeless shelters, we offer financial assistance to cover emergency overnight housing costs or refer those facing housing and food insecurity to partner programs with emergency shelter services.
Even during a pandemic, our homeless shelters evolved and innovated to serve their neighbors in need despite the ongoing challenges. Check out the internationally recognized efforts of The Salvation Army of Marquette County Michigans successful efforts to keep people fed and sheltered when the public transit system was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Transitional Housing
Our transitional housing programs offer hope to the temporarily displaced, chronically homeless population, and many young adults who have aged out of the foster care system. For those experiencing a recent eviction, domestic breakup, addiction issue, or any other housing crisis, our temporary shelters provide homeless individuals with food and lodging while equipping them with the resources and support needed to regain stability.

Everybody Counts: Annual Point
Each year, United Way coordinates a count of the homeless population. Volunteers hit the streets and visit shelters over a 24-hour period to interview people experiencing homelessness. Its about more than just getting a count. Its about learning why individuals are homeless and what services they need to succeed. Sure, its a requirement of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Grant, but the data also helps Impact ICT CoC plan programming, make informed funding decisions and measure the progress of their work.

County Commissioner: We Dont Have Enough Quality Affordable Places And The Addiction Rates In Our Community Are So Astronomical That We Just Dont Have Enough Recovery Type Services
By: Lily O’Shea Becker– August 14, 2022 3:55 am
A man lies under shading on July 19, 2022, on North Topeka Avenue in Wichita. Temperatures reached 108 degrees in Wichita that day.
Homelessness in Kansas
This is the first article in a series about homelessness in Kansas.
Part one: Wichita increases resources to reduce homelessness, but more housing and health services are needed
Part two: Backlash in Lawrence over the cleanup of a homeless camp exemplifies the citys unique challenges
Part three: Homelessness stretches beyond urban borders, where bipartisan legislation could help address housing shortages
WICHITA Staci Ellis left a verbally abusive relationship and ended up homeless in Wichita for nine months before settling into an apartment about four weeks ago.
Ellis, who describes herself as a huge advocate for the homeless population, has been homeless four times. She said everyone in Wichitas homeless community knows her because she previously worked at a shelter where she collected and handed out donations.
The way Ellis sees it, one of the biggest challenges for Wichitas homeless population is knowing where to get help.
Our homeless community has massively changed in the last year, Ellis said. I mean, a lot of people that I knew a year ago that were on the streets are actually housed now. Now we have this whole new group of people who have no clue where the resources are.
Despite those efforts, Wichita still faces profound challenges with homelessness.
