Salvation Army Kroc Center: A Gem For North Philadelphia
“Sometimes the most familiar-looking works of architecture produce the most radical results. Such is the case with the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center, which opened its doors this winter in one of those hollowed-out, industrial-era exclusion zones that pockmark so much of North Philadelphia.
Driving by on a dreary, underpopulated stretch of Wissahickon Avenue, you might not recognize the Kroc Center as a brand-new building from the road, it appears that ordinary. If you bothered to give the low-slung, sandy-colored brick structure more than a glance, its exact function might not be apparent either. School? Church? Rec center? Social-services agency? The Kroc Center, designed by Philadelphia’s MGA Partners, is all the things mentioned above, and yet it is far more than the sum of its parts.
It’s a little ironic, of course, that profits from the billions served at Mickey D’s are what paid for this Big Mac of fitness centers, but so be it. Just before her death in 2003, Joan Kroc, the widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, dropped a check for $1.5 billion into a virtual red kettle so the Salvation Army could build community halls in 27 poor neighborhoods around the country. Philadelphia’s center is the ninth to open, and it’s got all the fixins imaginable.

Josias A Sterling Aquatic Education Program
Josias A. Sterling Aquatic Education Program is a program at The Salvation Army Kroc Center made possible by a generous contribution from the Josias A. Sterling Memorial Fund. This program graciously introduces at least 100 children yearly to swimming and water safety, who would otherwise not have access to these resources.
Josias Sterling, tragically lost his life when swept away by a riptide in July of 2009. Josias was a student athlete/rugby player for both St. Joseph’s Prep and Temple University. Under this program, scholarships are available for those who would like to learn how to swim.

The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia held a public ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 16, 2010, to dedicate The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Philadelphia, the ninth center to open in the United States.
Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Donald W. Lance, Salvation Army Kroc Center Administrator Major Timothy Lyle, and General Secretary and Director of Operations Major Jorge Diaz presided over a ceremonial ribbon cutting at The Salvation Army Kroc Center. Amanda Latimer, granddaughter of the late Joan Kroc Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter State Senator Vincent Hughes, and a number of other federal, state and local representatives offered special remarks.
A dedication service followed with representatives of architect MGA Partners and construction manager T.N. Ward Company presiding over a Presentation of the Keys, and a special presentation by Salvation Army members to the Kroc family. The afternoon concluded with self-guided tours of the 130,000-square foot state-of-the art facility, the newest, largest, most comprehensive community center on the East Coast.
Site work and construction began in March 2009, and to date, The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia has raised nearly $31 millionmore than any other Salvation Army Kroc Center.
