GRAND RAPIDS, MI With winter weather coming this weekend, its officially time for the Salvation Army to kick off its annual Red Kettle campaign.
For this holiday season, the Salvation Army of Kent Countys campaign goal is to raise $1.7 million, up from $1.6 million last year.
The campaign kicked off at noon Friday, Nov. 11 at the Knapps Corner D& W Fresh Market on Apple Orchard Avenue SE in Grand Rapids.
Here in Kent County, The Salvation Army has been blessed to have SpartanNash as a corporate partner at Christmas for more than two decades, stated Major Tim Meyer, The Salvation Armys Grand Valley Area commander, in a news release.
Because of their generosity and funds raised at their grocery stores, we are able to provide year-round funding to all of our programs, including the critical needs of helping to prevent hunger and homelessness.
According to the Salvation Army of Kent County, it has already served more than 14,000 individuals in need this year and expects to serve over 1,000 families over the Christmas season.
We are committed to fighting hunger in our communities and hosting this campaign at our grocery stores is one way we live our Core Behavior of We Serve, said Adrienne Chance, executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation and senior vice president of communications, in the release.
Our Housing Services Philosophy
Housing Services at The Salvation Army Social Services of Kent County is a community-driven resource rooted in a Housing First, strength-based approach.
Housing First is an approach to ending homelessness that centers on providing people experiencing homelessness with housing as quickly as possible – and then providing services as needed. We believe that the only solution to ending homelessness is housing.
To work from a strength-based perspective, we must have an absolute belief that every person has potentialand it is their unique strengths and capabilities that will determine their evolving story as well as define who they are – not their limitations.
We believe that ending homelessness is a community challenge which requires a community solution. We believe that any community member in Kent County experiencing literal homelessness or imminent risk of homelessness should be assisted quickly and effectively, with a goal of stable housing. We believe that those who are the most vulnerable should be prioritized when resources are limited.
We believe we can do the most good when we work together and serve one another.

History Of The Salvation Army
Soon after beginning his ministerial career in England in 1852, William Booth abandoned the concept of the traditional church pulpit in favor of taking the gospel of Jesus Christ directly to the people. Walking the streets of London, he preached to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.
When fellow clergymen disagreed with Booths unconventional approach, he and his wife Catherine withdrew from the church to train evangelists throughout England. The couple returned to the East End of London in 1865, where many followers joined their fight for the souls of lost men and women. Within 10 years, their organization, operating under the name The Christian Mission, had over 1,000 volunteers and evangelists.
Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among their first converts to Christianity. And soon, those converts were also preaching and singing in the streets as living testimonies to the power of God.
When Booth read a printers proof of the 1878 Christian Mission annual report, he noticed the statement The Christian Mission is a volunteer army. Crossing out the words volunteer army, he penned in Salvation Army. From those words came the basis of the foundation deed of The Salvation Army.
Today, The Salvation Army is active in virtually every corner of the world and serves in over 100 countries, offering the message of Gods healing and hope to all those in need.

HAP is a community-driven resource rooted in a Housing First, strength-based approach . We are here to connect people who are literally homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness to the best available housing resource in the community. We do this by completing assessments to better understand the needs of each person or family and then pair them with a housing service provider from the community, known as Housing Resource Specialists. That way, anyone experiencing homelessness needs to only start at one place.
Much of our screening and assessment process can be completed over the phone. The conversation will include many questions about you, your family, or anyone else that is experiencing the crisis with you. These questions can take some time to complete but are required for any potential access to our community’s housing resources. We may also ask for you and your family to provide certain documents or other items that are also required for eligibility.
