Determining The Value Of Your Donation

Value Guide for Salvation Army Donations

These page will assist you in determining the tax-deductible value of any items you are donating to The Salvation Army. Your qualifying tax deductible donations are resold through our Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores through the country and serve to fund our Adult Rehabilitation program.

The Donation Process

When making your donation, you will be required to fill out a form indicating what you are donating and the estimated value of your donation. Please choose a value within this range that is in keeping with your item’s relative age and quality.A receipt for your items may be obtained in one of three ways:

  • If you drop off a donation at a local Salvation Army Family Thrift Store or Corps , the clerk or receptionist will be happy to provide you with a receipt.
  • If your items are dropped off at an unattended Salvation Army drop-box, an itemized list is required to receive a receipt. Your local Salvation Army Corps or Family Thrift Store can have a receipt made out for you once you bring this list to them. Please itemize your donations with the value next to them to claim them for your taxes. Your tax consultant will be the best resource for advice on how to itemize and submit this information.
  • If you have your donations picked up, the truck driver will provide you with a receipt.

Donating items you no longer want or need to charity is a great way to help others. Someone out there can surely use clothes, furniture, and more. On top of that, the Internal Revenue Service gives you something in return for your generositya tax break.

The problem is that deducting charitable gifts from your taxable income is one of the more complex aspects of tax law. You can consult with a tax professional, but all this giving isnt supposed to end up costing you money in the long run. Weve put together these general guidelines to help you along before Tax Day.

    Furniture And Other Household Items

A lot of variables exist in this category, particularly for furniture. Age might not be much of a determinant. What if youre donating an antique? It might be old, but that hardly makes it worthless. In fact, it’s probably increased in value. Youll almost certainly need an appraisal in this case.

The condition of the piece tends to be far more important than age, assuming it’s not an antique, as is style. A type of sofa that was all the rage back in 2010 might have negligible value now, and its certainly not an antique yet, either. As for things like linens, they tend to retain very little value after theyve been used.

Otherwise, you may be able to deduct the below values for tax year 2021:

    • Twin bed: $36 to $104
    • Full or larger bed: $52 to $176
    • Bedspread or blanket: $3 to $25
    • Coffee table: $15 to $100
    • Desk: $26 to $145
    • Towels: $0.50 to $4
    • Upholstered chair: $10 to $104

As with clothing items, the fair market value of household items is typically much less than what you paid for them. And these items all fall under the good used condition or better IRS rule as well.

    Valuation Guide For Items Donated

New Digital Donation Receipt – The Salvation Army
The following is a list of the average prices of donated goods, if the items are in good condition. New or expensive items might be higher, damaged items lower. This list is for guidance only, variables such as condition, age, antique value, cleanliness, repair need and value when new must be taken into account. New Federal Income tax regulations require donors claiming deductions for charitable contributions consisting of property other than cash worth more than $500 to file Internal Revenue Service Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions. Where the noncash charitable contribution, other than publicly traded securities, exceeds $5,000 , the donee charitable organization must acknowledge the contribution on the form 8283. In addition, donee charitable organizations are required to file Internal Revenue Service Form, 8282 Donee Information Return, when they dispose of certain property, the receipt of which they have acknowledged on a Form 8283.

What Items Does The Salvation Army Accept

The Salvation Army accepts many common items that you tend to see in thrift stores, including:

    • Blankets, towels, pillowcases, and sheets
    • Household items, such as pans, dishes, and cutlery
    • Tapes, CDs, and vinyl records
    • Electronic devices

In addition, the Salvation Army also accepts donated vehicles. This includes a wide range of cars, trucks, and other vehicles the organization may be able to sell. Also, in many cases, the vehicle condition doesnt matter. The organization will accept vehicles that are not operational or have cosmetic damage to sell for parts.

Itemizing Vs Claiming The Standard Deduction

According to the tax policy institute, approximately 30% of taxpayers itemize their deductions each year. To determine whether you should itemize or not, you should add up all your potential itemized deductions,, including state and local taxes, mortgage interest, and donations, to determine if they are more than the standard deduction for your filing status.

When calculating your total deduction, keep in mind that most deductions are limited in some way. State and local taxes are capped at $10,000 each year and mortgage interest is limited to the interest paid on the first $750,000 of your mortgage balance .

If you determine that itemizing your deduction is beneficial, then you should gather your tax documents and receipts to calculate your total deductions. Your total itemized deductions are declared on Schedule A of your individual tax return.

    Additional Forms You May Need

You must get a written acknowledgment or receipt from the organization for any gift you make for which youre claiming a deduction of $250 or more.

Youll also have to submit Form 8283 for many of these items. Section A of Form 8283 must be submitted for all donations valued at over $500, and really pricey gifts over $5,000 require that you fill out Section B and have an appraisal to support the value.

Household goods and clothing items that arent in at least good, used condition require an appraisal as well as completion of Section B if you claim more than $500 for them.

How To Determine Fair Market Value According To Publication 561 In The Irs Guidelines:

    Donation Value Guide

*Fair Market Value’s above were determined using a combination of existing public, online valuation guides offered by The Salvation Army , Goodwill Industries , and Tax Center Plus . Tax preparation software such as DeductionPro or ltsDeductible are available online for determining accurate Fair Market Value’s that are consistent with IRS Guidelines.

The fair market value of used household items, such as furniture, appliances, and linens, is usually much lower than the price paid when new. These items may have little or no market value because they are in a worn condition out of style, or no longer useful. For these reasons, formulas are not acceptable in determining value. You cannot take a deduction for household goods donated after August 17, 2006 unless they are in good used condition or better. You should support your valuation with photographs, canceled checks, receipts from your purchase of the items, or other evidence. Magazine or newspaper articles and photographs that describe the items and statements by the recipients of the items are also useful. Do not include any of this evidence with your tax return. *

Where Does Your Money Go When You Donate

So what happens to the money they make from selling the things you donate? According to the organizations website, 82% of its proceeds go directly to supporting people in the communities the Salvation Army supports. This means that the other 18% goes to managing the Salvation Armys organization, including important elements of its infrastructure, such as:

    • Running physical stores
    • Paying people who work for the organization
    • Maintaining the organizations website and other digital assets

For some people, knowing that 82% of the money made from their donations goes toward people in need provides a sense of comfort and purpose.

The Salvation Army is also an international organization. It sends funds to other countries to support a range of initiatives the Army feels align with its principles, such as:

    • Helping underdeveloped populations in foreign countries
    • Providing aid for communities in other countries that have gone through disasters
    • Promoting international social justice programs
    • Supporting their international womens ministry

How Do Salvation Army Donations Work

Salvation Army donation debate rages as activist call out charity

When you donate an item to the Salvation Army, it gets processed and put into one of their physical stores. Then, when someone purchases it, a large portion of the money goes towards helping people the Salvation Army has designated as in need. The people the Salvation Army aims to help include a wide range of individuals of various ages, including people experiencing unemployment, homelessness, human trafficking, domestic abuse, and many others.

Rather than taking the funds they generate from your donations and giving them to existing organizations, the Salvation Army uses a systematic process to build the programs in which they invest their proceeds. At a high level, the organization does this in three steps:

    • It tries to assess the needs of one or more communities it serves. This involves figuring out the most significant challenges and obstacles that people face.
    • The organization then builds programs designed to meet these specific needs.
    • It then invests in these programs while also offering them to the people in the communities theyre serving.

Other items on the Salvation Armys do not donate list include tires, wheels, and other automotive parts.

To Spend Less On A Moving Vehicle

Every item on your packing list takes off at least some space, and getting rid of several may make it possible to get a smaller moving vehicle. This can not only save you money on the rental fee, but you may also spend less on fuel. To whittle down your list of items to pack, a trip to the Salvation Army may be just the ticket.

For example, some people may want to get rid of one or several pieces of furniture that would otherwise take up a lot of space in the back of a moving van.
