The Voice Of Your Donation
At The Salvation Army Thrift Store, a donation is more than just an item. Learn about the lifecycle of a donation, and explore the remarkable stories from the perspective of a donation below.
SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
I may look like a regular yellow raincoat, but I am so much more. When Sams mom picked me up a few years ago, I was brand new. I loved playing in the rain with Sam as she danced through puddles. When my sleeves became too short for her, Sam got a new raincoat. Thats when my journey really started. After being given to The Salvation Army Thrift Store, I travelled from the production floor to the sales floor, and I learned why donations like me matter. Being donated empowered me to be more than just a raincoat.
I was only on the rack for two days before Mason found me. He didnt know it, but Mason was doing so much more than simply finding a new raincoat. By choosing to take me home, Mason and his family were supporting local Salvation Army programs and services, like the food bank close to our home that feeds over 800 families every month, and the shelter downtown that provides safety and warmth to individuals experiencing homelessness. Every donation like me helps generate funds to support programs that bring care to neighbours in need.
Theres power in giving items like me a chance to really matter for someone who needs a helping hand. Thanks to Sam and Mason, I am one powerful raincoat!
DIGNITY THROUGH ACCESSIBILITY
What Cant I Donate
It costs The Salvation Army millions of dollars each year to dispose of unsellable items that have been left outside our stores.
Please don’t donate anything that is broken, damaged, ripped, stained or in any way faulty. As a simple rule, if there’s something wrong with it then we can’t sell it.
We also can’t accept:

- Weapons including replicas and martial arts weapons

Not all our Salvos Stores or op shops are the same. Some are larger and can accept larger items, while other smaller stores may not be able to. Sometimes, there are government regulations around certain items that mean we cant accept them. We encourage you to call your local Salvos op shop to discuss your donation of:
Please make sure that you deliver your donation during business hours so that it can be safely received. Its illegal to leave goods outside stores after hours as it creates a public hazard. Rain can also damage donations left outside, resulting in us having to dispose of them.

How To Locate Salvation Army Drop Boxes
The Salvation Army, one of the nation’s most well-known charitable organizations, collects donations of goods at its various locations. The organization also has trucks that can come to your house and pick up bigger items. But if you just have a few things to donate, a drop box may be the most convenient way to get your items in the hands of those who need them most.

Steady Stream Of Donors
Mothership visited The Salvation Army Headquarters at Bishan on Dec. 30, and saw that the situation had improved tremendously.
While there was still an overwhelming pile of donated items within the drop-off booth, they were accumulated within the white tentage, as compared to the earlier scenes on Dec. 22 and 28.
This could partly be due to the closure of the drop-off booth at Bishan, where there were notices encouraging donors to drop off their donations at another Salvation Army drop-off booth located within Tanglin Family Hub.
However, based on the steady stream of donors trickling in by the minute, the public were apparently unaware of the closure.
This included a couple with a yellow suitcase filled with items.
They lingered by the guardhouse contemplating what to do next.
Other donors who arrived were apparently undeterred and crossed the barricades to leave their items behind.
The couple and other donors proceeded to sidestep the barricades to drop off their items as well.
Most of these items were clothes, as well as a portable gas stove, books, an electric hand mixer, a baby pram, and four dark grey chairs.
Mothership understands that the drop-off booth was closed off to allow for the items to be loaded onto trucks, where as many as 12 to 13 of these trucks transport the donations away daily.

The Salvation Army was founded in London in 1865. Since then it has grown into a global charitable organization, currently serving in 130 countries through its friendly donation drop off points and more. The American arm of this Protestant Christian evangelical organization provides a number of essential services to the underserved sectors of the United States.
These services include homeless shelters, food pantries, sanctuaries for victims of human trafficking and domestic abuse, support for the LGBTQ+ community, poverty alleviation programs, education programs, alcohol, and drug rehab services, and spiritual counseling.
On top of all those causes, they are one of the leading platforms helping US residents to sponsor children in need who are living overseas.

Us Charities With Book Donation Drop Off Stations
Whether youre a bookworm or not, you probably have some books lying around gathering dust. And I bet what brought you to this post is because youre thinking of donating them.
Donating used books is one of the best ways to give back. According to astudy, about 640,000 tons of books end up in landfills every single year. Just imagine how much paper is wasted, not to mention the knowledge contained in between those pages.
What makes this even more unfortunate is that some students have toforgo meals just to buy books probably the very same books that are lying in a dumpster somewhere.
So if youre ready to do your part to end this unfortunate cycle, here are some US-based charities that have book donation drop off locations:
