Large Operating Budgets To Manage

Should I donate to the Salvation Army?

“These are large charities with large operating budgets and large staff requiring management,” said Kate Bahen, managing director of Charity Intelligence.

The largest charities on the list, and their annual operating budgets are:

  • Canadian Red Cross: $313 million.
  • Salvation Army: $218 million.
  • YMCA of Greater Toronto: $213 million.

The two smallest charities on the list are arts-related. The Toronto Festival of Arts Culture and Creativity has an $11-million annual operating budget and 23 full-time staff, while the Canadian Film Centre has a budget of $11.2 million and 42 full-time staff.

Bahen and her staff at Charity Intelligence analyzed the salary data against the organizations’ budgets. She said the salaries are generally “in line with the size of the organization and the size of the staff that requires management.”

Rather than looking solely at salaries to determine whether a charity deserves support, Bahen said donors should consider such things as financial transparency, accountability and administrative efficiency.

“We’re not seeing excessive compensation” at charities in Canada, said Bahen. “Some Canadian donors believe that people who work for charities should not receive any salaries. That’s a little unrealistic in 2017.”

The Canada Revenue Agency requires all registered charities to disclose the range of salaries paid to their staff, but not the specific amounts. That data can be found on the CRA website.

Are Salvation Army Officers Employees

The Salvation Army is a non-denominational Christian Church that has been actively engaged in social ministry since 1878. It does not hire employees, instead, individual churches _ control their own budget and hiring. Also, individuals joining these corps are hired as workers, not as employees. The only exception is the officers that are hired to work at the Salvation Army headquarters..

What Is The Typical Donation Size

Since the early 1800s, the Salvation Army and Goodwill have both been in operation. Each company has locations all around the world. Every store offers things for sale at a discount. A network of employees at Goodwill manages charity shops and solicits donations from customers.

Individual consumers account for fifty to seventy percent of each businesss sales. The Salvation Army, on the other hand, has been around for more than 120 years.

The company has more than 3,200 retail establishments. The majority of Goodwill stores function by sorting donated clothing, removing items that are mildew-ridden, and dividing clean items from those that are no longer functional.

Ncvo: Charities Not Doing The Basics Will Increasingly Look Out Of Place

Best-practice recommendations from NCVO, established a number of years ago following media criticism of charity executive pay, say that charities should publish the exact salary of their highest earners.

Its report, published in 2014, says details should appear on its website no more than two clicks away from its homepage.

Responding to Civil Society’s analysis, Elizabeth Chamberlain, head of policy at NCVO, said: There’s a clear direction of travel towards greater transparency, and charities not doing the basics will increasingly look out of place.

Demonstrating transparency is an important part of establishing and reinforcing credibility and trust not just for individual organisations but for the whole sector.

Range Of Salaries Reported

The charities choosing to publish figures on their websites ranged from those which pay comparatively small salaries to larger ones. The median chief executive salary for 2019 at the largest 100 was £155,000.

The Salvation Army’s top earner receives between £150,000 and £160,000. However, its territorial leader, the equivalent of its chief executive, is given a relatively small remuneration of £15,500. Details of this are given on the charity’s website.

A Salvation Army spokesperson said: As a church and charity with responsibilities towards our beneficiaries, supporters, staff and volunteers, we are committed to being transparent and accountable. That is why we publish a full salary breakdown of higher-earning staff on our website.

Key management personnel of The Salvation Army comprise officers and employees. Salvation Army officers do not receive a salary they receive an allowance based on length of service and, as ministers of religion, are provided with furnished accommodation and a car. The allowances received by officers in positions of key management range from £15,177 to £18,965 per annum.

For employees, we are committed to ensuring a proper balance between paying salaries which will enable us to attract and retain staff of the appropriate calibre and careful stewardship of charitable funds. All senior salaries are benchmarked against senior staff salaries of comparable organisations in the not-for-profit sector.

Half Of The Largest 100 Charities Publish The Exact Salary Of Their Highest Paid Employee

Less than 10% of the largest 100 charities publish the exact salary of their highest earner directly on their website, although a further 42% make it available via their annual report.

Civil Society News looked at whether the largest 100 charities posted salaries on their websites, and not just in their annual accounts.

Many charities posted links to accounts on their websites, explaining that salary information could be found there. In our analysis this has not been counted as being directly on a website.

Of the 100 charities assessed, only nine posted salary details directly on their websites. A further 42 charities posted the exact figure of the highest earner in their accounts, whilst 48 posted a salary band. One charity in the largest 100 does not employ staff.

The Charity Finance 100 Index, which is compiled by Civil Society Media’s Charity Finance magazine and ranks the largest charities in the UK by their average income over three years, was used as the basis for the analysis.

An Article That Compares The Salaries Of Top Executives Of Several Large Charitable Organizations Is Mostly Outdated And Inaccurate

    Advertisment:

When deciding which charities to donate to, many people consider an important factor to be the “efficiency” of these organizations that is, what percentage of the monies taken in by a given charity goes to funding its mission rather than being eaten up by costs such as fundraising activities, salaries, and other administrative overhead.

The e-mail reproduced above, which began circulating in 2005 and has been re-circulated every year since then around Christmastime, attempts to steer potential donors away from inefficient charities. Unfortunately, much of the information it presents was inaccurate back in 2005, and it has grown only more so in the years since then, resulting in a misleading and outdated view of various charities. We attempt to present accurate and up-to-date information about the named charities below.

The following efficiency information is derived from the Charity Navigator web site, the GuideStar web site and Forbes magazine’s November 2009 special report on the 200 Largest U.S. Charities. Salary information is taken from Schedule J of the various charities’ IRS Form 990 filings, an annual reporting return that certain federally tax-exempt organizations must file with the IRS which provides information on the filing organization’s mission, programs, and finances.

Why should a pensioner on less than £150 a week give £5 to a charity, completely unaware that the charity pays its chief executive £200,000? We analyse accounts of charities submitted to the Charity Commission to show the varying degrees of remuneration across a range of charities.

Can-A-Thon 2021 | Salvation Army of Metro Atlanta

With the call out for donations to help Bahamians recover from Hurricane Dorians devastating hit, an old graphic again. Its a table that purports to show the charities that are “the good guys,” and those that play people for suckers, paying lavish salaries to their CEOs and spending a puny percentage to actually help people.

Among its key claims for good charities, it says the head of the Salvation Army makes only $13,000 a year, and the chief of Ronald McDonald Houses is paid nothing at all.

Among the credited purported bad guys, the United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund, better known as UNICEF, gets bad marks for paying its CEO $1.2 million, spending 14% of its money on programs, and giving its CEO a Rolls Royce to use. The March of Dimes is second on the list, paying its CEO $450,000 and putting just 10% into programs.

This post, which was published on Facebook on Sept. 6, was flagged as part of Facebooks efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed.

    Heres the graphic:

This table appeared in 2015, and some of its numbers might have been more accurate then. But fast-forward to 2019 and, by and large, the charities it warns about make much better use of their charitable donations today than the chart suggests. And most of them dont pay their CEOs as much as this claims.

We focused on the organizations that were labeled as bad places for donations, as well as the claims of uncompensated CEOs. Lets take those claims one by one.

Stop Charities Spending Too Much On Staff Salaries

Petition heading: Remove status from charities paying staff more than 3 times the average wage. Charities in the UK should have their charitable status removed if they pay any of their staff more than three times the average wage. Why should a pensioner on less than £150 a week give £5 to a charity that pays a CEO £200k? In 2016-2017 three times the average wage is £82,500. Many get more. By way of examples Parkinsons UK has 10 staff earning between £60,000 and £130,000, The Royal British Legion has 26 staff earning between £60,000 and £160,000, Help for Heroes has 17 staff earning between £60,000 and £110,000 and Cancer Research UK has 219 staff earning between £60,000 and £250,000.

One of our main aims is to encourage charities to avoid paying their staff salaries which appear to be many times the national average. Charities should be about giving. We fear that they can be about taking taking liberties with the generosity of the general public and taking money from charitable giving to pay their staff. We should like to encourage charities to pay their chief executives at a maximum level of perhaps 3 times the average annual salary in the UK. In 2016 this is estimated to be £27,500 per annum.

    Who Is Goodwill’s Ceo

The current CEO of Goodwill makes over $1 million annually.

It is unclear whether Goodwill’s compensation is reflective of the charity’s efforts to help the less fortunate and disadvantaged. In addition, some critics question Goodwill’s decision to sell donated items to a neo-imperialist buyer in a third-world country.

The CEO of Goodwill Industries is Steven Preston, with Richard Cantz, the President and CEO of Goodwill Northern New England.

Mark Curran never worked at Goodwill or owned a single Goodwill store. Moreover, his salary is still significantly lower than that of the average CEO in the USA. Reaching more than $800,000 per year.

The nonprofit has a history of being a top-paying employer in Oregon. According to its annual report, Goodwill paid its CEO $882,288 in 2014, making him the highest-paid CEO in Oregon.

His compensation package included $409,028 in salary, $233,730 in bonuses, and $179,686 in retirement pay. In 2011, Miller was the second-highest-paid nonprofit CEO in Oregon.
