Requirement To Join The Army

Whats The Weight Waver Allowance

Requirements to Join the Army

If a new applicant in the army exceeds the maximum weight limit, they may still be sworn in as a new recruit so long as theyre within the maximum body fat percentage for their age and gender.

In general, the strenuous physical Army training is more than enough to ensure that soldiers stay within the weight and body fat composition. But if youre planning on becoming a new recruit, its important to start training early on to ensure that your weight requirements will be met once you take the MEPS.

Trust Your Recruiter To Guide You

If youre considering joining the Army, your recruiter will be there to support you throughout every step of the process. Recruiters know the Army well, so theyre qualified to help you determine if its the right fit for you. They can help you define your goals, plan for key steps in the process, and guide you in the right direction.

Us Army Age Requirements

To join the Army you must meet minimum and maximum age requirements. That means you must be at least 17 years old and younger than 35.

If you are under 18 you will need parental consent to enlist.

In addition, anyone that has completed time in other branches of the military may still enlist in even if they are beyond the age requirements.

To see if you would qualify, subtract your previous years of service from your current age. If your age is below the maximum age limit after deducting your prior years of service you may qualify to re-enlist.

United States Military Enlistment Standards

How To Join The Army ( The Enlistment Process, Recruiter, ASVAB, MEPS, DEPS )
  • US Naval Academy

Stew Smith, CSCS, is a Veteran Navy SEAL Officer, freelance writer, and author with expertise in the U.S. military, military fitness, and its traditions.

Enlisting in the United States military is very different than applying for any other job. Not everyone will qualify, and there are strict rules which would never apply to civilian employment. Congress and the courts have held that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ensures all individuals are treated equally before the law with respect to civilian employment, does not apply to the military profession.

The military doesn’t accept just anyone who wants to join. To enlist, you must be qualified under current federal laws and regulations or have an appropriate waiver. There are age, citizenship, physical, education, height/weight, criminal record, medical, and drug history standards that can exclude you from joining the military. Statistically, this past decade, a majority of recruits fail to meet the height/weight standards of the military as the number one reason why people cannot immediately sign up for service. Here is a look at some of the basic qualifications to enlist in the military.

S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the six active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

If you decide to enlist, you will report to a military entrance processing station . Youll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

Educational Benefits For You Your Future

One of the most crucial benefits of joining the Army is the opportunity to go to school without the crushing debt burden of student loans. Whether you want to attend college, pay off existing student loans, or pursue certifications and training, there are countless benefits available to you. In fact, on your first day as an enlisted Soldier, youll get $250 per credit hour each semester, additional tuition money after you serve five years with the GI Bill, and dozens of other financial aid programs to help you achieve success.

GI Bill: The GI Bill helps pay for college education or vocational training. In most cases, soldiers receive full tuition for their programs. A soldier qualifies for 100% full tuition if they spend 36 months in the Army.

Tuition assistance: While on active duty, you are able to continue your education and get help in defraying the cost of college-accredited courses.

Us Army Height And Weight Requirements For Current Soldiers

Why do we include height and weight guidelines for currently serving troops in an article discussing enlistment standards? Because as mentioned above, it wont be long before the recruit is tested again for body composition after going on active duty. These issues are a career-long concern for all soldiers.

Previous iterations of AR-900 have included statements directed at currently serving soldiers that most today would consider to be derogatory. The 1986 version goes so far as to state, Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline, detracts from military appearance, may indicate a poor state of health, physical fitness, or stamina .

The above statement from the 1986 edition doesnt consider medical issues or other factors that may inform a persons diagnosis as overweight.

Language in the 2019 revision of AR-900 takes a far more nuanced approach, stating, Soldiers are subject to many demands and challenges that may impact individual readiness. The Army Body Composition Program provides commanders a systematic approach to enforce military standards across the unit while offering troops with the resources they need to return to an optimum level of individual readiness.

The U.S. Army has the following requirements for height and weight for those currently serving:

Any soldier failing to meet body fat standards after six months from the date of entry to active service will be entered in the ABCP.

How Are Weight Limits Taken

EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Army Reduces Academic Requirement To Woo More ...

Like the height measurements, weight measurements are taken as part of the MEPS, and then every 6 months once theyre sworn in as a new recruit. Weight measurements are rounded up or down to the nearest whole digit. So if someone weighs 124.6lb, this will be written down as 125lb. There are also body fat percentage tests that may be carried out should you exceed the maximum limit for being in the Army. This is also known as the weight waver.
