The people of Bucks County are grateful for the many sacrifices each veteran has willingly made in the service of our country and for the cause of freedom throughout the world.

As a symbol of their appreciation, the Bucks County Board of Commissioners extend the services and benefits of the Department of Veterans Affairs to those veterans and their dependents.

Effective October 30, 2018, Military Reservists and National Guard members also are eligible for a Bucks County Veteran Discount Card. Any member who applied in the past is encouraged to re-apply.

Pennsylvania Veterans Homes Need Nurses And Health Care Workers

TRANFORMING HEALTH Pennsylvanians who served their country are waiting for weeks or even months to get into one of the commonwealths homes for military veterans.

About 1,500 former servicemembers and their spouses live in the states six veterans homes. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs executive director Travis Davis says they have enough beds for another 500 people and about 330 veterans waiting to get in.

What Davis doesnt have are enough nurses and certified nurse assistants. The state is urging qualified job seekers to walk in to one of the veterans homes to find what he says is a rewarding career.

The majority of our residents come and they live the remainder of their lives with us, Davis said. So our staff becomes very close and personal with them, and sometimes our staff are the closest thing to family for them.

The jobs come with state benefits and retirement, Davis noted. They also have a better nurse-to-patient staffing ratio than is often found in the private sector. That staffing ratio is one reason the homes cant simply accept more veterans without hiring more workers.

Davis says interested people may show up any Wednesday and are encouraged to bring two forms of ID. They may be offered a job on the spot. Veterans homes are in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, Scranton, Spring City and Hollidaysburg.

Senator Lisa Baker Inducted Into The Pennsylvania Department Of Military And Veterans Affairs Hall Of Fame

FORT INDIANTOWN GAP Sen. Lisa Baker has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Hall of Fame.

Baker, a current member and past chair of the Senates Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, has been a strong voice for veterans issues and has pushed for several pieces of legislation that eventually were signed into law that aid and recognize veterans in the state.During the induction ceremony on July 15, Baker told those gathered that when running for the Senate, I never imagined that this was the committee I would chair, much less that the assignment would extend for such a period of time. It is an outpost happily far removed from political posturing, and a place where through concerted effort important results can be delivered.

It affords the chance to show respect for veterans every day, and not just on designated holidays. About veterans issues, it can never be said there is nothing to do it should never be said that nothing can be done, Baker said.

Among her notable efforts are the special veteran designation on state drivers license to honor the service of the commonwealths 950,000 military veterans and establishing the Honoring Our Veterans Pennsylvania license plate, which raises money for the states Veterans Trust Fund.

The DMVA operates its own sworn Police Force at Fort Indiantown Gap. The Fort Indiantown Gap Installation Police enforce PA State law and military regulations on State owned/operated property. They are required to be trained in accordance with Act 120 which is administered by the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers Education & Training Commission.
