How Is The National Guard Different From The Reserves
Although the National Guard is a part of this nation’s reserve forces, there are a few differences between the Army or Air Force Reserve and the Guard. The National Guard is by far the oldest component of any of the uniformed services. It traces its roots to the colonial militia, and claims a “birthday” of 1636. By comparison, the U.S. Army was founded in 1775 and the U.S. Air Force was created in 1947. More importantly, the National Guard maintains a unique “dual status” – both State and Federal – that no other service or component has. This dual status is rooted in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, which states that “Congress shall have the power … To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress.”
What Is The Massachusetts National Guard’s Mission
The Massachusetts Guard has a unique dual mission, with both federal and state responsibilities. During peacetime, Guard forces are commanded by the Governor through the State Adjutant General . The Governor can call the Guard into action during local or state-wide emergencies, such as storms, floods, blizzards and civil disturbances. In addition, the President of the United States can activate the Massachusetts National Guard to participate in federal missions. Examples of this are the many Massachusetts Guard units that have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terror. When federalized, Guard units are commanded by the Commander in Chief of the theatre in which they are operating.

Active Duty Vs Reserve Or National Guard
What is the difference between someone who is active duty military and someone who is in the Reserve or National Guard?
A person who is active duty is in the military full time. They work for the military full time, may live on a military base, and can be deployed at any time. Persons in the Reserve or National Guard are not full-time active duty military personnel, although they can be deployed at any time should the need arise.
What Controversies Have There Been Over The Guard
In a few instances, presidents and governors have clashed over the militarys domestic law enforcement role, particularly during periods of civil unrest. While governors can call on Guard members to serve as temporary law enforcers, presidents cannot do so under normal circumstances. The Posse Comitatus Act generally prohibits the president from using the military in this role. However, presidents can circumvent this law by invoking the Insurrection Act. For example, President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the law to federalize the Arkansas National Guard to enforce desegregation of the states schools following the governors refusal to comply with the Supreme Courts Brown v. Board of Education decision. President John F. Kennedy did the same in Alabama and Mississippi.
Debate over the domestic use of the military flared once again in 2020 amid nationwide anti-racism protests sparked by Floyds death. President Trump threatened to deploy the military to quell civil unrest in parts of the country, and some Republican lawmakers urged him to do so using the Insurrection Act. Instead, he asked governors to send their National Guard troops to Washington, DC, to aid the federal response there, which was widely criticized as heavy-handed.

How Will My Membership In The Massachusetts National Guard Affect My Civilian Job
Generally, membership in the Massachusetts Guard has a positive influence on civilian jobs. The skills and leadership you acquire are sought after by many employers. Some Soldiers and Airmen find their civilian and military jobs complement each other, while others seek to add diversity to their lives and skills by serving in a capacity quite different than their civilian occupation. Regardless, your membership within the Guard should not have a negative impact on your civilian employment. There are federal laws prevent employers from discriminating against an employee due to his or her membership in the Massachusetts National Guard. In addition, if you are called to active service, your employer is required by law to allow you to return to the same job you had when you left. What Is The National Guard
The National Guard is one branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Massachusetts National Guard consists of both the Massachusetts Army National Guard and the Massachusetts Air National Guard. We are composed of full-time and part-time Soldiers and Airmen, as well as civilians, who together serve their commonwealth and country. All other states and territories have their own National Guard, as provided by the United States Constitution.

Role of the Army National Guard
When the United States declared war on Germany on 6 April 1917, there were already approximately 66,700 Guardsmen on active duty from the mobilization supporting the Mexican border conflict.4 Many of these Soldiers had deployed within the United States to protect critical infrastructure and transportation facilities. On 5 August, President Wilson drafted the entire National Guard into federal service as individuals.5 This action allowed Guardsmen to deploy outside of the United States without any concern for judicial rulings that would have limited expeditionary action. These Soldiers would be used primarily as an augmentation force, regardless of composition they served across the spectrum of forces as needed.

What Does The National Guard Do
The National Guard fulfills a range of duties, including:
Disaster relief. The Guard is frequently called up to respond to statewide emergencies, such as natural disasters. For example, hundreds of National Guard members were deployed to combat historic wildfires that ravaged western states including California, Oregon, and Washington in 2020. The Guard prepares every year for the hurricanes that now routinely strike the southeastern United States. In 2019, the Guard responded to sixty-three natural disasters, including seven hurricanes or tropical storms, nineteen floods, and twelve fires.
Military support. The National Guard also plays a crucial role in supporting U.S. military operations overseas. Since 9/11, more than one million National Guard members have deployed to theaters including Iraq and Afghanistan. Members of the Guard have fought in nearly every U.S. conflict since the Revolutionary War. Roughly thirty thousand are deployed around the world on any given day.
More than twenty thousand Guard members are expected to be deployed to provide security for President-Elect Joe Bidens inauguration, more than three times the number of troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria combined. For comparison, about eight thousand Guard members were on hand for Trumps inauguration, and ten thousand for President Barack Obamas first inauguration, which drew historic crowds.

How Long Do I Have To Join For
If you have never served in any branch of the military, there are several enlistment options. Usually, Soldiers and Airmen can serve for as little as three years, with longer periods available as well. Some benefits are based upon the length of your initial enlistment. Veterans who have served in any branch of the military have additional options available to them including a “Try One” program which allows a veteran to serve for only one year on a trial basis before committing to a full enlistment. A recruiter can provide further details.
Wy Army National Guard Employment
Employment for the WY Army National Guard consists of Traditional and Full-time Jobs. Traditional is the part-time service with weekend drills once a month plus Annual Training. Full-time includes Active/Guard Reserve, Title 32 Dual Status Technicians and Title 5 employment.

What Are The Qualifications I Must Meet To Join The Massachusetts National Guard
The National Guard has physical, academic and legal qualifications. You must be in good health and have no major physical handicaps. The minimum age to join the National Guard is 17. Persons under age 18 must obtain the consent of a parent or legal guardian. You must be either currently in high school or have a high school diploma or GED. You must also obtain a minimum qualifying score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery exam . Soon after you contact a recruiter, they will administer this test to see if you are qualified. Your ASVAB score will also determine which jobs you are qualified for. Finally, you must have no major criminal convictions. This information is only a basic outline of the qualifications. Before enlisting you will receive a detailed medical examination and background check. Your recruiter will provide you with more exact information and make recommendations regarding your qualification status.
Iii: From Vietnam To Iraq
The previous examination of the Militia and Army National Guard from inception through Vietnam provided the building blocks for the subsequent transitions that became known as Guard 1.0 through Guard 3.0.
Concept of Army National Guard 1.0 Through 3.0
Guard 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and an emergent 4.0 provide the sequential phased numbering identifying transition points of the Army National Guard over time. The establishment of this lexicon started with the transition from a conscription force during Vietnam to an all-volunteer force in 1973. From this inflection point, there is a series of pivotal moments in time whereby global events triggered a requirement for a transformational change. Figure 1 provides the evolutionary timeline from Guard 1.0 through Guard 4.0, highlighting key events and dates for each inflection point. While each era falls within a timeline, national level events shape the starting points. These points begin at the end of Vietnam, then transition to the height of the Cold War, Desert Storm, the Global War on Terror and the future of a resurgent Russia and China. They represent a shift in personnel, equipping, training and core competencies within the organization. Central to each evolution is the role of the Army National Guard in defense of the nation, the corresponding homeland response, and the anticipated reliance on the reserve components during times of crisis.

I: Background Of The Militia
The first American colonial militia regiments date from 13 December 1636 in the Massachusetts Bay colony. These militia responded to the call of duty for both the colony and nation by executing the laws, suppressing insurrections and repelling invasions. In May 1792, Congress passed the Militia Act of 1792, requiring all free, able-bodied men ages 1845 to serve in the enrolled militia and to provide their own weapons and equipment. No federal monies were authorized for pay, equipment, training or any other purpose. This act also provided for an adjutant general in every state under the authority of the local governor. Their responsibility was to train, discipline and administer the militia.

National Guard Full Time Or Part Time
Q. Can I serve full-time in the Guard? Yes. The Guard has several types of full-time employees. Within each state there are full-time personnel who manage the day-to-day operations of the units in their state or territorial Guard. These soldiers serve in a status known as “Title 32,” which refers to the section of the US Code that they are governed by. In addition to their full-time positions, these soldiers serve with a unit in a traditional status as well. These positions are managed by each states Military Personnel Office, part of the State Area Command . There is also a federal active duty force, which is centrally managed by National Guard Bureau and the Army National Guard Directorate in Washington, DC. These soldiers serve in a “Title 10” status and are not required to drill with units. The core of the Title 10 force is stationed at the Army National Guard Readiness Center in Arlington, VA, a few miles from the Pentagon. Additionally, there are Title 10 officers serving across the nation and worldwide as an interface between the Guard and other agencies.

Transfers within the National Guard are handled within the units involved on a case-by-case basis. Factors such as unit needs, individual skills, unit locations and career goals are considered. If you move more than 50 miles away from your unit you may transfer to a closer unit. If you move to another state or territory, you can transfer to the Guard of that location.
