Safer Options For Army Enlistment
While new recruits often dont have access to the non-deployable jobs and may not have access to the safer options right away, there are some options for those entering the Army that are safer than others. If you want a safer Army job, consider the following options:
- Support and Administration Jobs Some of the support and administering jobs are non-combat.
- Human Resources HR Jobs often dont see deployment and if they do, they are not in as much danger as other jobs. They may be responsible for emergency contact data, personnel records, accountability and postal services.
- Medical Jobs Some medical jobs are non-combat and others wont have you right on the front lines.
- Financial Management Technician Basically a bookkeeper or accountant, this job is typically safe.
There are several other safer positions you may be able to enter into in the Army. However, the changes of a new recruit getting deployed are far better than a service member that has served for many years already.

Army Jobs That Dont Deploy

There are Army Jobs that dont see combat, but they are not available to new recruits. However, if you want to work towards these jobs, you should know which direction to take. Heres a look at a few of the Army jobs considered non-deployable.
Media and Materials
As a member of the Army, you can work on the media and materials team. These soldiers work to help create educational videos, training materials and other publications for the Army. Normally, these are non-deployable positions. Most of these positions are very computer intensive and may include training in multimedia or graphic design.
Recruiters
Army recruiters will work to find new candidates to join the army. They often set up on college campuses, in malls and in other areas looking for those eager to join the military. Most recruiting positions are non-deployable, but they could be pressed into service if its a dire need. While theres no guarantee as an Army recruiter, this is one of the Army jobs less likely to deploy.
Instructors
The Army has a need for many instructors including drill sergeants at Fort Benning and officers at West Point. These are non-deployable positions and often go to experienced military service members. Most instructors have combat experience and will transition into this type of career at some point. While the instructor positions are Army jobs with no deployment, many instructors have been deployed in the past.

While SF soldiers are very capable fighters, its just as important to their mission that they are good instructors. Green Berets are called on to deploy all over the world, build lasting relationships with local groups friendly towards the United States, and then teach those groups how to kill effectively. The SF soldiers then begin going on missions with the locals and fight side-by-side.

While another vital and essential service to the military, it doesnt prevent MOS 92S from being one of the worse jobs in the Army.
Army Shower, Laundry & Clothing Repair Specialists perform housekeeping and laundry chores around the base.
They are primarily responsible for sorting and folding laundry, cleaning, and making clothing repairs.
Army bases function like small civilizations which is why there is a need for essential services even if no one wants to do chores full-time during a tour.

Are There Any Military Jobs That Dont Require Combat

There are some non-combatant military jobs that do exist. Most of these jobs are found in very remote or domestic areas and deal with personnel assistance or administrative duties. The availability of these jobs will vary from one branch to another.
Often, military jobs that dont require combat will be found in the branch of the military with very little or no interaction with warfare. Even though these jobs may be labeled at non-combatant, the location youre stationed in has more to do with whether youll see combat than the actual job.
When you start looking into military jobs that dont require combat, you want to find a job that takes place on a domestic base. If the job takes place on a base overseas, you could end up in a war zone. Heres a look at some of the military jobs that dont require combat.
Specialties That Don’t Lend Themselves To Combat
Once you’ve settled on a military branch, the next step is finding employment specialties that don’t lend themselves to combat. The one exception might be service in the Air Force as a drone pilot. Drones engage in combat zone activities their pilots don’t. In fact, most are stationed in Nevada.
Computer programming skills and almost anything related to digital technology innovation or repair aren’t much needed in combat zones. Also good are legal services Certain business skills aren’t useful in combat either: Clerk/typist, finance specialist and data processing, for example. If you have academic or teaching skills, these are also good: linguistics, teaching foreign languages, and especially, teaching anything related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics. These skills are in high demand and are not likely to get you killed.

Recruits Can Enlist Straight Into Special Forces
Believe it or not, a recent high school graduate could walk into a recruiting office and enlist for 18X, Special Forces Candidate. These recruits go through basic training and then immediately enter the Special Forces training pipeline. If they fail or are simply arent selected during the Special Forces assessment, they are re-assigned to infantry.
It wasnt always this way. In the past, Special Forces typically wanted soldiers to be older and more seasoned in the regular Army before making the jump. The older SF soldier even has a name for the younger generation making it through the Q-course: SF Babies.

Deployments Dont Always Involve Combat
In popular movies, books or other media, military deployments are usually characterized as being very dangerous, with troops heading off to war in a remote location. While this is a possible reality for some service members, not all deployments involve combat situations.

One example of a non-combat deployment is when a Navy submarine needs supplies while it is underway for a long period of time, a Navy submarine tender which is a type of ship designated to tending submarines when necessary will deploy from its station with its entire crew aboard and set sail for the submarines location. The tender may be stationed at a port in Guam, and once a submarines crew requests assistance, the tender will deploy for however long it takes to supply the submarine with fuel, food, etc.
The Right To Reemployment

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act is a federal law that gives members and former members of the U.S. armed forces the right to go back to a civilian job held before being called up for Active duty. It also prohibits any job-related discrimination by your employer based on your military service or military service obligations.

But Why Would My Recruiter Pressure And Coerce Me Or Lie About My Rights
Recruiters have a job to do. They have a certain quota they need to meet each month. You dont count towards the quota until you report for boot camp. If a recruiter consistently fails to meet this quota, they get poor evaluations, fail to advance through the ranks as required, and/or get transferred to less desirable job assignments. They might even be deployed to a war zone. It is in the best interest of the recruiter to get you to sign up and go to basic training.
The United States has an all-volunteer military. That means that no one should be forced to join the military who does not want to go into the military. This includes those who join the DEP and then change their mind.
Who Is Covered By Userra’s Protections
You qualify for USERRA protection if you held a permanent civilian job before you went on Active duty. USERRA covers all private employers, state governments, and offices of the federal government. The law applies to people who serve in:
- the Armed Forces
- the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard when engaged in Active duty for training, inactive duty training, or full-time National Guard duty
- the commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service
In time of war or national emergency, the President may also extend USERRA protections to other categories of people. You should have received information about USERRA from your service branch. If you haven’t, you can request information from your unit’s legal office.

Basic Requirements And Expectations
You must meet certain minimum requirements to join the military, whether full-time or part-time. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is at least age 17, and if youre not yet 18, you need parental permission. You need a high school diploma or GED, but entrance is more difficult with a GED.
Youll need to achieve a minimum score, which varies by branch, on the Armed Forces Qualification Test and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. Also, you must pass a military entrance medical exam and background check. Upon acceptance, youll attend basic training , which lasts eight to 13 weeks, depending on your branch. You could then attend Officer Candidate School, which requires a bachelor’s degree, or advanced individual training if your job requires it.
Both active duty and reserves have maximum age restrictions for who can enlist, but these differ by branch, as do physical fitness requirements. For example, to join the Air Force, you cant be older than 39, and you must pass the Air Force Basic Military Training Fitness Test.
All service members must adhere to gender-specific physical requirements related to weight, fitness, hair, nails, piercings, tattoos, and attire. In general, you must maintain a neat, professional, and natural appearance.

Army Deployment As A New Recruit
New Recruits dont really have access to positions considered non-deployable in the Army. The likelihood of deployment is very high for a new recruit after basic training. In fact, soldiers in the Army deploy more than any other military branch, except the Navy.
The length of deployment can range from 12 to 24 months and the Army is known to use the stop-loss program the most. This program allows the Army to expand the deployment past your normal separation date.
If you want to join the Army, but you want one of the Army jobs least likely to deploy, chances are, you wont be able to get one until later in your career. As a new recruit, even some of the safest Army jobs are not available to you yet.

The average military deployment is typically between six and 12 months long. However, deployment lengths vary greatly from branch to branch, are situational and depend on several factors specific to each individual service member.
For example, some Navy submarine deployments are less than a month long, while some ship deployments can be more than a year. On the other hand, some members of the Air Force can undergo several shorter deployments with very short breaks in between each.
