Tour Of Duty Calling For Older Military Members

What Army Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

Read how these service men created fulfilling work lives in the military during retirement age after 9/11.

Now retired in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Krissoff reflects that he would have done one thing differently about volunteering. I would have joined the Navy about five years earlier, he says. I really wish I had. It was a really good fit for my skill set. I was honored and privileged to serve by taking care of Marines.

Pay About This Section

Basic pay is based on rank and time in service. Pay bands are the same for all branches. Members of the Armed Forces may receive additional pay based on their job assignment or qualifications. For example, they receive additional pay for foreign, hazardous, submarine, or flight duty, or for being medical or dental officers. Retirement pay is generally available after 20 years of service.

Military pay tables and information are available from the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

In addition to receiving basic pay, members of the military are either housed free of charge on base or they receive a housing allowance.

Members who serve for a certain number of years may receive other benefits. These benefits may include educational benefits through the Montgomery GI Bill, which pays for a portion of educational costs at accredited institutions medical care at military or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and guaranteed home loans.

Military personnel on active duty typically work full time. However, hours vary with the persons occupational specialty, rank, and branch of service, as well as with the needs of the military. Personnel must be prepared to work additional hours to fulfill missions.

Becoming An Enlisted Personnel Or Warrant Officer

Enlisted personnel carry out the fundamental operations of the military. Their roles are like those of company employees and supervisors. Each service of the military has different enlistment programs and offers training and employment in more than 2,000 enlisted specialties.

General eligibility. High school graduation is one requirement for enlisted personnel who are between 17 and 35 years of age . Recruiters can explain eligibility differences based on what training and assignments match the applicant’s interests. Applicants are sent to a Military Entrance Processing Station for a physical examination. They then take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery . The results of these determine basic eligibility and training program qualifications.

Training. Recruits go to basic training to gain physical conditioning and essential knowledge and skills. Recruits are trained by other enlisted personnel in groups of 35 to 80. Daily routines are rigorous. Most days start at 5 a.m. and last until 9 p.m. and include classes, meals, athletics, and field training. Little free time is available and travel is limited. Vacation time is not authorized until the recruit has completed basic training and enters advanced training.

Military Age Restrictions: How Old Is Too Old To Serve

CRH is a great place to build a career at a leading company

The maximum age for military enlistment is 39 years old depending on branch. We examine pros and cons of the age limit in an era when people are living longer.

Other Considerations In 2012, U. S. Rep. Paul Broun Jr. , tried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted 256-164 against the military age restrictions measure. Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age. He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July. Break Through The Hiring Age Barrier

Though age discrimination is illegal, many older job seekers have trouble landing a job. Studies and anecdotal evidence indicate job seekers over 40 start having trouble getting hired and this difficulty increases into their 50s and 60s. This affects many of our transitioning military who have made the military their first career and are now getting out and seeking a new career.

Why is this? Do HR managers and recruiters hate older people? Do they not want to hire Veterans? Definitely not. HR managers and recruiters are eager to hire qualified Veteran job seekers and are often held responsible for failing to fill open positions. HR professionals are responsible for complying with the many laws related to hiring and employment. One of these, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act forbids discrimination against anyone 40 or older.

If you find you cannot seem to land a job, and you think your age is playing a role, here are strategies to address that.

Three factors stand in the way of older Veteran workers getting hired: money, skills, and seniority.

Skills can be a factor because hiring has become more keyword driven and recruiters may fail to recognize how your skills map to the newest keywords. And, if you are honest with yourself, you may have to admit your skills have become a bit out of date. If your skills were in high demand, would you be having this much trouble finding a job?

Which Branches Of The Military Can I Join At 30

It is natural to think of most new recruits as young faces that are fresh out of high school or college.

However, some service members prefer to wait until later in life to serve their country.

Whether pursuing the military is a newly founded goal or something you have considered for years, there are pros and cons to joining in your 30s.

Members of the military that begin serving later in life are generally more mature and prepared for service.

In fact, you can join the military as late as the age of 42 though some branches have different requirements.

The Corps Shift To A Lighter Distributed Force Requires Skills And Judgment That May Be Easier To Recruit Than Build Training Chief Says

The Marines are looking for a few older peopleat least, a few years older than typical recruits. Thats because the Corps will need troops with new combinations of tech skills and mature judgment to meet the challenges and threats expected by 2030, according to the services trainer-in-chief.

If we think about what the commandant is asking us to do as part of the inside forcea force that will live, compete, contest, and then have to possibly transition to crisis and conflict later onwe need very, very intelligent Marines, Lt. Gen. Kevin Iiams, who leads the Marine Corps Training and Education Command, said during Defense Ones State of Defense event Thursday.

This new level of critical thinking is needed to meet Gen. David Bergers Force Design 2030 vision, which seeks to reorient the Corps toward expeditionary and distributed maritime operations. Iiams said these concepts will require Marines who can operate on their own in remote locations, thinking strategically as well as tactically.

Have we trained that individual properly to understand the ramifications of do I pull the trigger? Do I not pull the trigger? Do I know what I need to know to execute mission-type orders and carry out the nation’s bidding based on what I have seen and what I think is going to happen?, he said.

Iiams said the Corps was thinking about ways to recruit people with skills developed in the civilian world, and paying them more to entice them to join up.

The 59-Year-Old Army Boot Camp Graduate

Older workers often wonder how up front they should be about their age when applying for jobs. After all, “jobs for old people” isn’t usually a specific category on job boards, so you’re most likely competing with workers of all ages.

Why Does The Military Impose Age Enlistment Restrictions

You might think that there should be no age limit on wanting to serve your country. However, the age enlistment limit ensures that every recruit has the time to satisfy minimal education requirements and are adequately fit.

Although we would not like to admit it, the human body tends to become less physically fit as it ages. Over a certain age threshold, it is difficult for a person to be in good physical condition to meet the necessary standard of fighting for a country.

Holdren turned to the Air Force and enlisted two weeks before her 40th birthday.

I thought, If I join the Air Force, they can train me from zero, she told Air Force Times. Whatever job is available, I will take it.

In 2014, the service increased the age cutoff from 27 to 39 for those without prior military service to enlist on active duty. The Air Force Reserve changed its age limit from 34 to 39 as well.

Seniors At Work: A Growing Trend

Retirement used to mean the end of your working life. But having a job during one’s senior years is now becoming increasingly common. That means more and more older people are figuring out how to make money after retirement. Just take a look at these numbers:

    • By 2024, one in four workers will be older than 55, according to Reuters. That’s double what it was in 1994.
    • Close to half of the new jobs created in 2018 were filled by 55-and-older workers, making seniors the age group with the biggest job growth that year.
    • Almost one in three workers expect to be 67 or older when they retire.

In addition, many employers now actively look to hire seniors. More and more of them are starting to recognize that experienced and mature workers often have strengths that some younger workers lack. For example, many older workers exhibit strengths like:

    • Loyalty: A Department of Labor study found that newly hired older workers are more likely to remain in a position over the long term than workers who are hired at younger ages.
    • A strong work ethic: When asked to name the advantages of hiring older workers, 70 percent of surveyed HR managers cited this quality, according to an AARP report about the value of experience.
    • A good attitude: Out of all age groups, workers over the age of 55 demonstrate the highest levels of positive engagement on the job. That’s according to the AARP report.
