Over 6000 Military Jobs To Be Cut As Mod Forced To Make 25bn Of Savings Despite War In Ukraine

  • Michael Hamilton

MORE than 6,000 military jobs are to be cut as it is forced to make £2.5billion of savings, a report reveals.

The axe will fall on posts in the Navy, Marines and RAF because Army numbers have already been cut to the bone.

Troops are also likely to receive very limited pay awards for the next decade, the National Audit Office concluded following an in-depth review of military spending.

The warnings come as war rages in Ukraine and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace fights for his budget to be increased after years of cuts.

The NAOs report states that 6,350 posts will be lost and the number of recruits trimmed by 1,450 by 2032.

The Marines are expected to be hit particularly hard, with 2,050 positions likely to be lost.

Another 2,500 jobs will go at the Navy and 1,800 from the RAF.

But the report notes that the Army should be spared as its numbers are already down from 80,000 to 73,000.

It also warns that MoD budgets for pay awards will be squeezed by inflation.

The MoD said: We have a fully funded plan for £242billion of defence spending over the next ten years.

Performing Well On The Asvab

Without a doubt, you want to take the ASVAB very seriously.

Perhaps you already have an MOS, Rating, or AFSC in mind.

Or maybe you just know that you wouldnt like a mechanic job because you struggle with making repairs and dont consider it one of your strengths.

The military tries to get you in a career track that you will enjoy, but the needs of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard always come first.

With that said, if you perform well on the ASVAB, you open yourself up to more job opportunities, as well as potential incentives like cash bonuses.

Those that took the ASVAB once and feel like their performance on the testing does not match their education, training, or experience can speak with a military recruiter.

If the recruiter agrees with your appeal, he or she will grant you another opportunity to take the ASVAB.

SAN DIEGO A job fair held in Mission Valley Thursday connected San Diego military veterans and their family members with recruiters, as many prepare to transition back into civilian life.

After being in the military for 21 years, you dont know what to expect, said Luis Rincon.

Those are worries that are all too familiar for Rincon and other military vets. Rincon served for 21 years as an Army Chief Warrant Officer, and he was ready to make the transition back to the civilian world, but it wasnt simple.

Rincon remembers thinking, What do I do now? I’m so used to the structured lifestyle of the military. They tell us where to be and at what time. How long to be there and now you are in the civilian sector kind of on your own.

A few year ago, Rincon attended a RecruitMilitary job fair, which was tailored specifically for vets and their families.

He interviewed for a job at the event, and a week later, he was visiting an Air Liquide office. He was hired by the company shortly after.

Now, Rincon helps with recruitment for his company, getting the opportunity to help others who are now in the exact same situation, he was in years ago. He believes its his way of giving back as he shares this advice with job seekers.

Be open to a lot of opportunities and don’t sell yourself short. You learned leadership traits in the military put your best foot forward, you can get hired, Rincon said.

Minimum Asvab Scores For Each Branch Of The Military

The U.S. Armed Forces, regardless of the branch, requires you to meet a minimum Armed Forces Qualification Test score.

The Armed Forces Qualification Test is part of the ASVAB and basically sets a minimum overall score that every service member must meet.

Each military branch divides the minimum requirements based on if you have a high school diploma or GED.

You need one of the two in order to enlist in any military service.

Below are the minimum AFQT requirements you need to join the military branch you are the most interested in serving:

Branch of Military
  • Armed Forces Qualification Test

As previously mentioned the Armed Forces Qualification Test is your overall performance score.

Meanwhile, the other nine sub-tests relate to the educational subject most relevant to the MOS, AFSC, or Rating.

For example, someone interested in Electronics Repair would want to focus most on the subjects of Arithmetic Reasoning, Electronic Information, General Science, and Mathematics Knowledge.

Your score on each subtest, as well as the entire ASVAB, is determined as a percentile.

So, for example, if you score 70 on the Electronics Information subtest you performed as well, or better than 70% of others that have taken the ASVAB.

List Of United States Army Careers

The United States Army uses various personnel management systems to classify soldiers in different specialties which they receive specialized and formal training on once they have successfully completed Basic Combat Training .

Enlisted soldiers are categorized by their assigned job called a Military Occupational Specialty . MOS are labeled with a short alphanumerical code called a military occupational core specialty code , which consists of a two-digit number appended by a Latin letter. Related MOSs are grouped together by Career Management Fields . For example, an enlisted soldier with MOSC 11B works as an infantryman , and is part of CMF 11 .

Commissioned officers are classified by their area of concentration, or AOC. Just like enlisted MOSCs, AOCs are two digits plus a letter. Related AOCs are grouped together by specific branch of the Army or by broader in scope functional areas . Typically, an officer will start in an AOC of a specific branch and move up to an FA AOC.

Warrant officers are classified by warrant officer military occupational specialty, or WOMOS. Codes consists of three digits plus a letter. Related WOMOS are grouped together by Army branch.

The Army is currently restructuring its personnel management systems, as of 2019. Changes took place in 2004 and continued into 2013. Changes include deleting obsolete jobs, merging redundant jobs, and using common numbers for both enlisted CMFs and officer AOCs .
