Tips For Addressing Concerns With Your Tricare Coverage
Editors Note: This article by military and veterans reporter Patricia Kime, with contributions by Karen Ruedisueli, is part of MOAAs 2021-22 TRICARE Guide, brought to you by MOAA Insurance Plans, administered by Association Member Benefits Advisors . A version of the guide appeared in the November 2021 issue of Military Officer magazine.
When your medical care isnt going as you think it should or you have an unexpected bill, the Military Health System and TRICARE can be challenging to navigate.
Health care coverage in general is complicated, said Karen Ruedisueli, MOAAs director of Government Relations for Health Affairs. But the military health system has this unique aspect of direct care in military hospitals and clinics that can be unfamiliar for many younger military families and sometimes creates confusion about where to go for help.
Most military beneficiary medical care and service problems fall into two main categories: issues that arise over medical treatment and concerns over coverage or related claims and payment disputes.
Knowing where to seek help starts with where you receive care.

Do You Have Other Health Insurancehealth Insurance You Have In Addition To Tricare Such As Medicare Or An Employer
You can call us for help. If you need to see a doctor, remember:
- You must follow the rules of your other health insurance plan first.
- Your other health insurance is the primary payer.
- If we help you find a doctor, make sure they’re in your other plans network or your care may not be covered.
Take Advantage Of Self
With provider self service, you can verify patient eligibility, create and review referrals and authorizations, submit claims and check claim status, look up codes, view remittances, access pharmacy data by patient, access quality and affordability data and make changes to your provider practice information.
Once youve registered, you will have limited access to the tools and features until you add a provider TIN to your account.
To gain immediate access to all features, add a provider and use a recent referral/authorization to verify the account using the auth/order number and key code. This is the quickest method to gain full access to self-service. There are alternative methods for validating providers, which are given at the time of adding a provider.
