Tips For Aspiring Flight Trackers Track Air Traffic Live And In Real Time
An Antonov An-12 Unfortunately, this aircraft is not often seen in the European skies anymore and is already a classic of aviation!
206.000 flights in the sky per day! Although there are not so many aircraft in the sky every day, at peak times it can get crowded in the skies above. These flight movements do not include military aircraft. These account for a rather small share of air traffic. On average, just under 42 million flights take place each year. The trend is upward. So as a flight tracker you get your moneys worth.
With our real-time flight radar, you can now follow these flights live and retrieve interesting data about them. On average, commercial airliners move at an altitude of 11 kilometers and fly at just under 900 km/h towards their destination airport. Military jets can travel faster than that: Their top speeds can be twice the speed of sound . They often fly above the airspaces of commercial aircraft at altitudes of up to 14 kilometers.
By the way, you can see the planes that are displayed to you in the radar flying in the sky. The prerequisite for this is in most cases that the sky is cloudless. Just take a quick look at our Cloud radar.
How Does An Airborne Radar Work
To understand how an airborne radar works, we need to briefly look at the different radar models. In aviation, the primary radar and the secondary radar play the crucial role. The primary radar emits radar radiation all around, which is reflected by objects in the air. These objects can be airplanes, helicopters, gliders, balloons, but also animals such as birds or even swarms of large insects. For a flight tracker, this primary radar would quickly cause confusion. For this reason, there is also the secondary radar.
This not only obtains its data from radar radiation and the resulting reflection, but also uses the aircrafts transponder as a basis for information. This provides detailed information about the flight altitude, speed and the current course. In Germany, every aircraft that commercially transports passengers must carry a transponder. A special ADS-B system captures the transponder signals of the various aircraft worldwide and bundles them centrally. This information is then collected and displayed on the radar map. And visible to you as a flight tracker.
What Do They Cost To Use
The good news is that I think all of the flight tracking websites and apps are free to use in their basic form.
Most will have some kind of subscription service, which gives you more functionality and information.
Some may also charge you to download the app.
Those which require specialist equipment, such as a SBS-1 unit, also have the cost of the equipment to consider.

What Are Flight Trackers
Flight tracking websites and apps show you the aircraft currently flying overhead or anywhere in the world for that matter.
They can be viewed on your computer, tablet or smartphone and just require access to the internet or mobile data, meaning you can spot planes anywhere in the world, and far away from the actual aircraft.
It is useful for identifying aircraft trails high overhead, or planes you see on approach to your local airport. You can even use them as an alternative to needing binoculars when plane spotting, however, they eyeball is always the most accurate and sometimes incorrect information can be shown .
Filling In Gaps: Twitter And Plane Spotter Sites

Sometimes, the aircraft that you are looking for does not appear on any of the flight tracking websites listed above. Other times, you might find only a couple of flights on these pages. In order to fill in gaps in flight history, open source investigators have at their disposal two other tools: Twitter and plane spotter sites.
Twitter is full of individuals who spend a lot of their time tracking airplanes. Some of these individuals put a lot of care into cataloging the aircraft that they spot, be it on tracking websites or on the ground with their own cameras. In order to find information about an aircraft on Twitter, all you need to do is search for its registration. This will pull up any tweets including that aircrafts registration.
For example, here is Aeromexicos flight AM646 from Mexico City to Los Angeles when it is currently in the air. We can see that the aircrafts registration is XA-ADH:
Aeromexicos flight AM646 en route to Los Angeles. Note the aircrafts registration: XA-ADH
A search for that registration on Twitter pulls up tweets about that aircraft, two of which can be seen here and here.
As these examples show, Twitter can be a source not only of reference imagery for aircraft, but also of evidence that an aircraft was in a given location at a given time, even when the aircraft does not appear on any flight tracking websites.

Who Is Using The Flight Radar Or Sky Scanners To Track Flights
A lot of people find it interesting to track flights using flightradar.live. These may be plane enthusiasts or people who need the information for their hobby. Others may just want to see when a family members flight actually takes off.
There are many reasons why somebody might wish to use a sky scanner to track a flight and discover details about the altitude or plane.
Case Study: The Venezuelan Governments Secret Airplane
Lets put these tools and knowledge to use by looking at a recent example.
On August 10, 2019, former Colombian president Andrés Pastrana tweeted that an airplane belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had recently traveled to Cuba, and that it was transporting Colombian guerrilla leaders as well as other individuals. While there was no open source information available to confirm who was flying in that airplane, flight tracking websites and other sources did allow people to check Pastranas claim that the airplane was in use by Venezuelan government authorities:
In his tweet, Pastrana identified the airplane in question as YV3016. Now that we know that this is the airplanes registration, we can use any of the flight tracking websites in this guide to find out more information about it.
In this case, lets use Flight Radar 24. To search for YV3016, we simply write the registration in the search bar on the top left of the live traffic screen:
Note that the website tells us that it has record for the aircraft by showing us a drop-down window below the search bar showing YV3016
Now, lets look at what Flight Radar 24 tells us about YV3016:
Searching for the registration on Flight Radar 24 shows us pictures of YV3016, which company operates the aircraft, and that it is an Embraer Lineage 1000, as well as other information
According to Flight Radar 24, YV3016 flew to Moscow on May 5, and then to Istanbul on May 7. However, Conviasa does not fly those routes

What Does The Future Hold For Military Flight Tracking
In the 21st century, military air surveillance will continue to play an essential role in the worlds conflicts. As technology advances, how flight radar can be used is becoming more diverse and robust. This will allow smaller and faster aircraft to be monitored in the future. Therefore, flight radar will continue to be an essential tool for military reconnaissance.
How Does Flightradar24 Work
But how does it work? That’s slightly more complicated. The service boasts the largest ADS-B network in the world with over 30,000 connected receivers.
Its radars receive flight information from aircraft with ADS-B transponders and send this information to servers to allow tracking.
While ADS-B, which stands for automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast, is a relatively new technology and rarely used by air traffic control, Flightradar24 has a network of more than 20,000 receivers.

What Do Blue Aircraft Mean In Aircraft Radar
When aircraft are far from a radar station, locating them with a radar on the ground can prove very difficult. This is partly because the signals from the transponder cannot be received over a long distance, even due to the curvature of the earth.
For this reason, aircraft are also received by satellites on the basis of the transponder signals since 2020. For this purpose, specially designed receivers are attached to the satellite, which can capture the signal and transmit it to the ground station in real time.

A Summer Trend: Drones

These colourful, buzzing unmanned aerial vehicles have become ubiquitous. From amusement park stalls to discount stores. What is behind the trend for drones? For one thing, these remote-controlled aircraft are cheap to buy and easy to handle even for beginners after a little practice. Discount stores have some small drones on offer from around 30. Larger aircraft with a built-in camera retail for upwards of 100.
However, there is no such thing as unlimited freedom in the sky! To avoid run-ins with the police, there are a few rules that must be observed as the whirring UAVs can present a nuisance to some.
What is allowed?
Drones weighing up to 30 kilograms may be flown without a permit. However, privacy must be protected.
What are the most important points to bear in mind when handling a drone?
As the drone pilot, you should maintain visual contact with your drone at all times. Heavy drones can cause major damage if they should crash. We therefore recommend checking with your insurance company to make sure you have adequate coverage. Remember, drones are not a toy. Therefore, do not allow children below the age of 14 to use a drone unsupervised. The wind is another factor that is all too often neglected. If an insufficient distance is maintained from humans or animals, a sudden gust can quickly present a hazard and cause a crash.
What should be avoided when using drones?

How Does Radar Flight Tracking Work
With Flight Tracking, you can follow the flight status of any aircraft online, so you can better assess the status and see in near real time when the aircraft takes off, lands, where it is currently, is delayed or is approaching the flight destination.
You will also receive the fully recorded data from the aircraft that you are tracking on the radar. The most important data, which you can use free of charge thanks to the flight radar on this page, include:
- Cities and airports
What Is A Plane Spotter
Youre sure to have seen them before the aviation enthusiasts who visit airports with cameras and large lenses. They are known as plane spotters and they are experts at flight tracking. Plane spotters may have collections of thousands of pictures of aircraft from hundreds of airlines, which have usually been taken at many different national and international airports.
Plane spotters are particularly interested in the planes registration, which is much like a cars licence plate. The aim for many is to see every registration worn by each aircraft of a particular airline. This information and the aircraft type are displayed in a menu on the flight radar when you click on an aircraft. If you use the flightradar.live flight tracker, you can access the various airports quickly and easily via the menu. You will find the following flight radars, amongst others:
Washington Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport |
What is the history of plane spotting?
Plane spotting has its origins in the tracking of aircraft flights during World War II. In England, civilians in the coastal regions were asked to record the registrations of German aircraft in English airspace.
Flight tracking skills can also be applied outside of the aviation industry. Besides plane spotting, ship spotting and train spotting are also well established. These enthusiasts essentially do the same thing as plane spotters, but are interested in ships or trains.

Do Flight Tracking Websites Also Track Non
Many flight tracking websites have the data about almost all the commercial airplanes in air. Do they have the data about the private jets and/or defense aircraft also and they just don’t show that on the websites?
As long as an aircraft transmits ADS-B information, anyone within radio range can track it. The equipment necessary to receive ADS-B can be as simple as a computer with a TV receiver and the right software.
Receivers can then send the data stream to, for example, Flightradar24, who will display it on their website.
As Flightradar24 states, not all aircraft are equipped with an ADS-B transponder, and even those that do may not have switched it on. Unless ADS-B is installed and operating, it would not be visible.
@ezra-g mentiones that Steve Jobs’ aircraft was blocked, but this is of something one would have to ask for, and the site has to apply the filter so it doesn’t display on its website. However, Jobs’ plane would still have been visible on the receiving computers. And, of course, the website will only filter your aircraft if they are willing to do so, either on request, through payment, or a government order.
Flightradar.com also has some other data sources, like FAA radar information in the US, which also contains aircraft without a transponder. The FAA may also filter some aircraft.
From the FlightAware FAQ:
How Are Military Aircraft Movements Identified Today
Fighter jets and army helicopters can be found on the flight radar map by clicking on the aircraft icons. In addition, flight numbers and call signs such as HAWK, MC, USAF, STONE, METAL, LION, BAF, RRR, LK01/02 or PITT can be used to identify them. But beware. Most military aircraft do not appear on flight tracking sites for secrecy reasons. Even if they are on innocuous missions, they are not visible on public air radar maps.

Where Does The Flight Tracking Data Come From
The real-time aircraft location information shown here for flight tracking purposes is an online service provided by Flightradar24.com, which is operated by Stockholm-based sky scanner company Flightradar24 AB.
The signals emitted by ADS-B transmitters are received by ground-based ADS-B receivers and transmitted to the Flightradar24 network over the Internet for radar spotting purposes. Most modern civil aviation aircraft and some military aircraft today are equipped with these devices. The transmitted location data of the aircraft in question is correlated with further information about the aircraft type and route, and is displayed on a map. A view based on Google Earth has been used since spring 2013. The cockpit view makes you feel as though youre actually inside the plane. This function was temporarily unavailable for flight tracking, but has been reinstalled as part of a complete overhaul of the entire website.
The History Of Flight Radar In The Military
Military flight trackers are closely linked to the history of fierce conflicts. Since World War II, it has been used repeatedly to determine aircrafts position and make them visible on the radar image. It is an essential tool in monitoring and controlling friendly and enemy airspace.
Determining the position of combat aircraft is one of the most critical tasks of a military flight tracker. Monitoring own airspace has become an essential requirement for effective national defence. It allows enemy military aircraft to be detected and shot down early. Today, it is also used for civilian purposes to manage traffic and ensure the safety of air travellers.

What Does N/a Mean For Flight Radar
Surely you have already noticed it: You take a look at the flight tracker, see an interesting aircraft and of course want to know where the beautiful plane is flying to. But with great disillusionment you realize that the arrival point only says N/A. N/A, is that really an airport? And yes, where is it located?
Before you decide to search for a N/A airport via Google lets solve this mystery instead. N/A means nothing more than that the arrival airport is unknown. The reason for this is that no information about the destination airport is given via the transponder. This can be deliberately set by the pilot if, for example, he does not want any information about the flight route to come to the public.
Which Areas And Countries Does The Flight Radar Cover

In principle, flight tracking covers all countries that offer suitable radar positioning that is freely accessible to the flight radar. So, as a flight tracker, you can use the radar anywhere in the world. Only over the oceans it becomes difficult. Since radar coverage is often not available there, you will not be able to find flights far over the ocean. But if the planes are still near the coast, they are usually still detected by radar.
In the meantime the airplanes are also tracked via a Satellitetracked. As a result, the planes can also be tracked over the ocean if they are far away from the coast.
