Direct Commission Officers , known as Professionally Qualified Officers in the UK, are civilians who have special skills needed for military operations. The US Army currently employs DCOs in three fields:
- Medical: The US Army Medical Department is one of the largest and most advanced healthcare systems in the world, offering careers in over 40 specialty and sub-speciality areas. There are significant financial incentives and benefits for medical personnel.
- Legal: The Army Judge Advocate Generals Corps is the US Armys law firm. Its lawyers, called Judge Advocates, represent the United States in both civil and criminal military matters.

Becoming A Warrant Officer
Warrant officers are highly skilled, technical and tactical leaders with specialized careers in one specific area. Although warrant officers make up only a small portion of the Armed Forces, they hold a great deal of responsibility. Only the very best enlisted personnel, typically with five to ten years of experience in a specific technical field, are selected to become warrant officers. Enlisted service members and, on rare occasions in some service branches, civilians can apply to become warrant officers, and must meet the following minimum requirements:

- Earn a General Technical score of 110 or higher
- Pass a three-event physical fitness test

Army Officer Selection Board
Your assessment takes place in two parts: AOSB Briefing and AOSB Main Board, both take place in Westbury, Wiltshire.
AOSB Briefing
Once your Candidate Support Manager thinks that you’re ready, you’ll be sent to briefing. You’ll be assessed on physical and practical exercises and learn how to prepare for Main Board.
Main Board
This is your chance to put the skills you learnt at the Briefing in to practice. The Main Board will last for 2 1/2 days. You’ll need to be physically and mentally fit to pass, and show yourself to the best of your abilities.
How Rotc Works
While there are differences among each service branch, as an ROTC cadet, you can expect to:
- Take courses in military science, leadership and related topics alongside your regular college curriculum
- Participate in regular drills and summer training activities
- Maintain a minimum grade point average during college
Army ROTC graduates earn a commission as a second lieutenant and continue their training in their specific branch at Basic Officer Leaders Course. Navy and Air Force ROTC graduates continue their training at Officer Candidate or Training School before receiving their commission as a second lieutenant.

Serve With The Reserve Force
This position is available for part-time employment with the Primary Reserve at certain locations across Canada.
