Electronic Access To Pay Information
MyPay, a web-based service of DFAS, provides up-to-date, round-the-clock pay information for military service members, DoD civilian employees, military retirees and annuitants. Accessed through a personal identification number, the MyPay site also may be used to make address changes, review W-2 forms, or adjust contributions to the military Thrift Savings Program.
Because the service members Leave and Earnings Statement can be viewed through this secure site, many military families find MyPay especially useful during deployments. Service members often provide their PIN information to the spouse who then can access the LES through MyPay. Spouses find they are better able to help manage the familys finances while the service member is away.
Basic Pay Chart And Raises
Basic pay is a service members primary compensation. Two main factors affect where you fall on the basic pay scale: your years of service and your rank, which generally correspond with your military pay grade.
Basic pay rates are calculated monthly, rather than weekly or bimonthly, and are subject to taxes like civilian pay. And just like salaried civilians in the private sector youre not eligible for overtime pay. Your monthly pay is automatically split in half and distributed twice a month, but if youre in the Army or Air Force, you can opt to receive a monthly lump sum instead.

The Gold Standard: Base Pay Tables
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service publishes the annual pay tables.
You can use the pay tables to determine how much base pay you are entitled to as a military member, or figure out how much you could get paid in the future.
To find out how much money you make in the military find the annual pay table for the current year. Then, simply find the row with your rank and scan to the column with your current years of service. The result is your base pay.
As an example, the below image pretends you are an O-2 with 2 years and 9 months of service.
The years of service column is mostly set as two year intervals. You dont qualify for the next column until you are exactly at the required number of years.
If you have served for 4 years and 3 months, you still use the base pay numbers from the 4 year column until you hit 6 years of service.
This base pay structure means that service members usually get a raise every one to two years, not counting annual increases in base pay . These quick raises mean that your earnings in the military grow relatively quickly!
Overall, figuring out how much money you make in the military is a relatively simple and predictable process.
Fortunately, the dates you get paid are also very predictable, making it easy to budget and plan month-to-month.
You May Be Able To Negotiate
When youre in the military, your pay is determined by your rank. In the private sector, however, theres room for negotiation. Knowing how much you need to cover your living expenses with something left over is a good starting point for determining your minimum acceptable salary.
Tip: If your employer wont negotiate on the dollar amount, you may be able to negotiate benefits like vacation time.

How He Built His Career Network
Even with the market working in his favor, Savin says he had to prepare intensely to get into those interview rooms.
For one, he doesn’t have similar networks that a lot of young professionals do. “I wasn’t a traditional student going to college with thousands of other students, or someone in the workforce,” he says.
So, he had to build his own network. In 2020, as he was thinking ahead to his transition out of the military, he began sending cold-messages to people on LinkedIn for career advice.
The response was underwhelming at first, until he perfected his elevator pitch and hit his stride.
The keys are to be genuine and specific. Savin says his winning formula includes saying something like: I saw on your profile you did XYZ, and I’m trying to do something similar. Would you mind sparing a few minutes of your time to tell me about how you got to where you are?
“So many people provided me with solid information” with that approach, Savin says. He got advice on pursuing a master’s degree, how to find a job, and even how much to save and invest after leaving the military.
