United States Military Veteran Suicide
United States military veteran suicide is an ongoing phenomenon regarding the high rate of suicide among U.S. military veterans in comparison to the general civilian public. A focus on preventing veteran suicide began in 1958 with the opening of the first suicide prevention center in the United States. During the mid-1990s, a paradigm shift in addressing veteran suicide occurred with the development of a national strategy which included several Congressional Resolutions. More advancements were made in 2007, when the Joshua Omvig Veterans Suicide Prevention Act created a comprehensive program including outreach at each Veterans Affairs Office and the implementation of a 24-hour crisis hotline. PTSD, depression, and combat-related guilt in veterans are often related to suicide as it can be difficult for veterans to transition to civilian life.
Minorities A Growing Share Of Military
The percentage of racial minorities in the ranks of officers and enlisted personnel has increased significantly since 1990. In 2009, more than a third of all active-duty personnel were minorities , an increase from 25.4% about two decades ago.
The proportion of racial minorities who are serving in the officer corps has more than doubled in the past two decades. In 1990, minorities were underrepresented in the officer corps: Only about 5% of all minorities were officers, even though officers constituted about 15% of all active-duty personnel. Currently 12% of all minorities serve as officersdouble the proportion in 1990while officers make up about 16% of the active-duty force.
Whites, including white Hispanics, make up 70.3% of the military. About 17% of all active-duty personnel report that they are black. Asians constitute 3.6% of the active-duty force. Smaller shares say they are Native Americans or Alaska natives , or Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders . An additional 5.2% of the military say they are a member of another racial group or do not specify their race and 1.6% report they are multiracial.
More than one-in-ten of active-duty personnel in 2009 reported they were of Hispanic ethnicity, with white Hispanics making up about six-in-ten of all Latinos on active-duty service.

Exemptions And 3 Exclusions
Federal agencies are required by law to disclose any information that is requested by U.S. citizens under the FOIA, unless it falls under one of nine exemptions.
These exemptions are in place to protect things like personal privacy, law enforcement, and national security.
Certain pieces of information related to the military may not be made available because it is a matter of national security. The exclusion protects the existence of foreign intelligence or counterintelligence, or international terrorism records that are classified.
However, if you are simply looking to verify the identity of someone that claims they served in the U.S. Military, this information is made readily available to the public.

Avoiding The Draft In South Korea
An armistice agreement has been in force on the Korean peninsula since 1953, but technically the South is still at war with the nuclear-armed North, and conscription is taken very seriously. Military service is enshrined in the constitution as one of the five primary duties of a citizen, alongside the payment of taxes, gainful employment, educating ones children and protecting the environment. The government also keeps a public database of evaders. Applicants for conscientious objector status endure intense scrutiny of their private liveshaving to satisfy investigators, for example, that they have never played violent video games.
Before the alternative to military service was offered, objectors were jailed, with some 19,000 Jehovahs Witnesses thrown behind bars over the years for their stance. During the years of martial law in the 1970s, some were tortured, beaten, or even killed. To this day, members of the denomination are social pariahs.
Others who manage to avoid service also meet with opprobrium. Nineties K-pop sensation Yoo Seung-jun was due to be drafted in 2002, but he renounced his citizenship just before his call up. There was a huge public backlash and Yoo has been banned from setting foot in South Korea ever since.

In reply to questions from TIME, a defense ministry spokesperson said improvements to alternative service could only come after the system is settled stably.
Ask To See His Or Her Dd
Another way to find out if someone is a veteran or not is to ask him or her for a copy of their DD-214.
The DD Form 214, or DD-214, is a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. It is provided to every service member of the U.S. Military upon discharge.
The document is provided by the United States Department of Defense and is presented to the service member when he or she retirees, gets separated, or discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
It includes every branch of the U.S. Military including the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy.
A DD-214 is available in two different versions for review. The short version, or redacted copy, provides basic information like the nature and type of discharge, as well as a re-enlistment code.
The Member Copy 4, or long version of a DD-214 contains far more information that details the type of service as well as reason for separation. The U.S. Military only provides one copy of this form, and offers no replacement copies.
For authentication purposes, a legitimate DD-214 can prove that someone did in fact serve in the U.S. Military. However, you need to ask the individual directly for this documentation.
Furthermore, it is not always crystal clear to the untrained eye to notice the difference between a legitimate DD-214 and one that has been falsely created.
For this reason checking a DD-214 is usually not your best option for doing a free military background check.

The oldest member of the group will be turning 30 in December 2022, which is the age cap for the mandatory listing. In a statement, BigHit said, Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government.
During their concert for the Busan bid for the 2030 World Expo on October 15, 2022, Jin announced that he will be the next member after J-Hope to release his solo work. His single will be released soon, and he said, I was able to work together with someone that Id always really liked, so Ill be releasing a new song. According to the Associated Press, it was announced in 2015 that the National Guard headquarters in New Castle, Delaware was renamed after Beau Biden. It was renamed the Major Joseph R. Biden III Armed Forces Reserve Center where the Army and Air National Guard and local U.S. Navy Reserve are located.
Nothing made Beau more proud than putting on his uniform and reporting for duty, Bidens widow Hallie Biden said according to AP. He adored his brothers and sisters in the Delaware National Guard and what they represented in our state. The men and women who walk through the doors of this building are the finest we have were honored that he will forever be associated with them.

Direct-appointment officers who receive a call to active duty incur a 3-year ADSO.
Direct commission officers can receive a commission without the typical requirements such as attending a service academy, ROTC program, or officer training school.
People who receive direct appointments are often ministers, lawyers, or medical professionals. They will most likely start at a higher military rank than most other officers, such as the rank of captain or O-3.
Need To Know Terms For Joining The Military
Before we get started, there are some terms and abbreviations you need to understand:
- Military Service Obligation : The military service obligation is the total required years of service that each person who becomes a member of a Military Service must serve under the regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the respective military branch.
- Active-duty service obligation or Active Duty Service Commitment : The active-duty service obligation or active-duty service commitment is the time that must be completed before you can think about getting out of the military.
- Individual Ready Reserve : A reserve component where military members who have an unfulfilled portion of their initial 8-year Military Service Obligation or other service commitment are assigned. Members transition here because of recent separation from active duty or a participating guard/reserve program.

Because staying in touch with loved ones during a deployment can be particularly challenging for some service members, the USO offers several programs, like Operation Phone Home and the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program, designed to help them connect back home.This includes Wi-Fi, computers and phone call centers within the USO location, as well as pre-paid phone cards, all of which service members to use to connect with their families and friends back home. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program allows service members to record themselves reading stories to their children, and then send that recording and a copy of the book back home, so that they can still be there for bedtime.
Service members can be away from their homes for months at a time, but while they are in a distant location, they can still stay connected to their families by taking advantage of the USOs free services, so they remain strong while completing their missions.

Social Policy: History Of Veteran Suicide Prevention
The first suicide prevention center in the United States was opened in Los Angeles in 1958 with funding from the U.S. Public Health Service. In 1966, the Center for Studies of Suicide Prevention was established at the National Institute of Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health . Later on, in 1970, the NIMH pushed in Phoenix the discussion about the status of suicide prevention, presented relevant findings about suicide rate and identified the future directions and priorities of the topic.
However, it wasn’t until mid-1990s when suicide started being the central issue of the political-social agenda of the United States. Survivors from suicide began to mobilize encouraging the development of a national strategy for suicide prevention. Two Congressional ResolutionsâS. Res. 84 and H. Res. 212 of the 105th Congressârecognized suicide as a national problem and suicide prevention as a national priority.
As recommended in the U.N. guidelines, these groups set out to establish a public and private partnership that would be responsible for promoting suicide prevention in the United States. This partnership jointly sponsored a national consensus conference on suicide prevention in Reno, Nevada, which developed a list of 81 recommendations.

What Happens After You Register With Selective Service
Other than receiving your proof of registration, nothing happens unless theres a situation requiring a draft.

The Selective Service System will start calling registered men ages 18-25 for duty. The men will be called in a sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth.

The men will be examined for mental, physical, and moral fitness for military service.

They’ll either be deferred or exempted from military service or theyll be inducted into the armed forces.
How To Request Military Records From The Nprc
- Step 2: Download and print a copy of the SF-180.
- Step 3: Fill out the form SF-180.
- Step 4: Mail the form SF-180 to the National Personnel Records Center.
- Step 5: Wait for a response from the NPRC regarding the status of the request. After 10 days file an Online Status Update Request form.
An alternative to filling out and mailing a form SF-180 is to simply write a letter of request to the NPRC.
The letter does not need to be long, just simply outline as many specifics about the request you are seeking.
Try to include as much of the following info as possible:
- Veterans complete name while he / she served
- Social Security Number
- Date of birth of the person whose information youre requesting
- Place of birth of the person whose information youre requesting
Then, you need to sign and date the letter.

The NPRC asks individuals that make a request to the archives wait at least 10 days before following up with the center. It takes time for the NPRC to receive and process your request given their workload.
