Where Are Enlisted Recruits From
Enlisted military members come from all fifty states and the District of Columbia, but some contribute more than others. In absolute terms, the top five for recruitment in 2018 were California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and New York, which is reflective of their relatively large populations.
Another way of analyzing this data is to look at representation ratios, which show recruits as a share of a jurisdictions residents between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four. From this perspective, the picture is significantly different. A ratio of 1.0 means the jurisdictions share of recruits in 2018 was equal to its share of eighteen- to twenty-four-year-olds.
South Carolina had the highest representation ratio, at 1.5, meaning it contributed 50 percent more than its share of the country’s eighteen- to twenty-four-year-old population. Florida, Hawaii, Georgia, and Alabama round out the top five. On the other end of the spectrumjurisdictions that contribute fewer recruits than their share of eighteen- to twenty-four-year-olds, or those with ratios less than 1.0are Washington, DC, North Dakota, Massachusetts, Utah, and Rhode Island.
Desertions And Draft Riots
Desertion was a major problem for both sides. The daily hardships of war, forced marches, thirst, suffocating heat, disease, delay in pay, solicitude for family, impatience at the monotony and futility of inactive service, panic on the eve of battle, the sense of war-weariness, the lack of confidence in commanders, and the discouragement of defeat , all tended to lower the morale of the Union Army and to increase desertion.

Factors To Consider When Evaluating A Country’s Military Strength
There are several crucial factors to consider when analyzing the strength of a nations military. The capability and availability of equipment is essential. The quality of training each soldier receives is vital. Their commanders’ ability to consistently devise effective tactical strategies can be pivotal. But one of the most fundamental measures of a country’s military strength is the number of soldiers it can deploy.
The list of countries that boast the highest total number of members in the military may be surprising to some readers. However, it is vital to also keep in mind servicepeople are usually divided into three categories: soldiers on active duty, reserves, or paramilitary members.
- Soldiers on active duty Soliders who work for the military full time, often live on base, and may be deployed at any time.
- Reservists Soldiers who typically serve part time and join the reservessuch as the Army Reserve or National Guardto make extra money, get tuition bonuses at college/university, or take advantage of other perks without devoting themselves full time to the military.

Female Military Peacekeepers Network
The Female Military Peacekeepers Network was created in April 2015 and so far about one hundred former and currently serving female military peacekeepers have joined the network. The network is an initiative of the Office of Military Affairs, with the aim of uniting female military who currently serve or have served in UN peacekeeping operations.
The network promotes, strengthens and advances the profile of female military peacekeepers, and creates a space of mutual support, mentoring, training and advocacy for UN female military personnel. The numbers for all services spiked in 1968-69 as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War reached its peak. All dropped dramatically as that war drew down. But even the peak of the Vietnam War pales in comparison to World War II. In 1945, there were over 12 million active duty military personnel.
The Army, Navy, and Air Force had significant cuts in the numbers of personnel with the end of the Cold War, while the Marine Corps numbers have stayed relatively flat.

The Army Ground Forces
Personnel in the Army Ground Forces were grouped into two areas: divisional forces and non-divisional forces. In March 1945, there was about 1,200,000 personnel assigned to divisions and 1,500,000 to non-divisional units.
The core combat arm of the Army Ground Forces was organized around the division formation. The division was created to be the smallest Army organization capable of performing independent operations. Ninety-one divisions were formed by the U.S. Army in World War II. In general, a division contained about 15,000 troops. See below for a complete breakdown of a division.
Non-divisional forces included service units and some additional combat troops not initially assigned to a division. Note: most service units were allocated across all U.S. Army organizations. For example, both the Army Service Forces and Army Ground Forces had engineer units. In addition, engineer units were part of divisions while other engineer units were part of non-divisional personnel.
What Un Military Personnel Do
The UN has been deploying military personnel for service in peace operations since 1948 when the Security Council authorized the deployment of UN military observers to the Middle East to monitor the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbours.
UN military personnel can be called upon to:
- Protect civilians and UN personnel
- Monitor a disputed border
- Monitor and observe peace processes in post-conflict areas
- Provide security across a conflict zone
- Provide security during elections
- Assist in-country military personnel with training and support
- Assist ex-combatants in implementing the peace agreements they may have signed.
One of the biggest changes UN Peacekeeping has seen over the 70 years of its existence has been the increasingly multi-dimensional nature of UN peacekeeping operations. UN military peacekeepers are often deployed in inhospitable, remote and dangerous environments where they face an unprecedented scale of challenges especially when protecting civilians, under asymmetric threats. The Us Army In The 1890s
For most of this decade, the Regular Army’s organizational structure consisted of five regiments of artillery, ten regiments of cavalry, and twenty-five regiments of infantry. In March 1898, two more artillery regiments were authorized, and the outbreak of the Spanish-American War would bring additional changes to the Army’s organization and missions. Since the end of the Civil War, the infantry and cavalry regiments had been engaged in numerous campaigns against the Native American tribes. Units were seldom at authorized strength, and, for the most part, the soldiers served as relatively small detachments , at posts scattered throughout the nation’s vast western states and territories. A reduced threat from Indians allowed the Army to begin reducing the number of garrisoned posts and this in turn allowed more companies to serve together at the same post. The Army began pushing for Congress to adopt a three battalion organization for each of its infantry regiments, but these regiments continued to be authorized only eight manned companies , with only 46 privates in each company.

This list of United States Army divisions is divided into three eras: 19111917, 19171941, and 1941present. These eras represent the major evolutions of army division structure . The 19111917 era lists divisions raised during the Army’s first attempts at modernizing the division, prior to the authorization of permanent divisions, and the 19171941 era lists the first permanent divisions, prior to advent of specialized divisions. The 1941present era lists all of the divisions organized, raised, or authorized since then.
As much as possible, divisions are only listed in the eras in which they were first created. Some divisions, such as the 1st Cavalry Division, are listed in multiple eras, as their organizations were drastically changed from one era to the next. Many divisions overlap the years listed in the era categories, mainly due to the slow pace in which they were deactivated, inactivated, or otherwise disbanded.
Several divisions have existed under multiple designations, such as the 10th Mountain Division , 10th Infantry Division). Additionally, several divisions with the same numerical designations were completely separate and unrelated divisions .
A Prodigy Of Organization
Of the three major theaters of operation during the war, 22 divisions were deployed to the Pacific, 15 divisions to the Mediterranean, and 61 divisions to Europe. Seven divisions served in both the Mediterranean and European Theaters.
Divisions of the U.S. Army were part of either of four organizations: the Regular Army, National Guard, Organized Reserve, or Army of the United States. The numbering of divisions was arranged as: 1 to 25 for the Regular Army 26 to 45 for the National Guard and 46 to 106 for the Army of the U.S. There were exceptions. The two airborne divisions, 82nd and 101st, were re-designated Regular Army when converted from infantry to airborne divisions. The 25th was formed from troops of the Hawaiian Division and was classified as an Army of the U.S. division. The 42nd Division, a National Guard division, was mobilized as an Army of the U.S. division.

A City Designed With Defense In Mind
The constant threat of a North Korean attack is one reason military production lines were established in the southern port city of Changwon, the cradle of South Koreas modern arms industry.
The city is in a natural basin, surrounded by mountains on all sides, making it easier to defend. The citys main road, Changwon-daero, has a 14.9-kilometer stretch that can double as a runway in times of national emergency.
At its southern end is the Changwon National Industrial Complex, established in the 1970s and home to the Hanwha Defense and Hyundai Rotem factories, where artillery pieces and tanks trundle off the assembly lines.
Overseas orders are rolling in this year, notably the landmark deal with Poland which the Korea Defense Industry Association estimates to be worth $15.3 billion.
Hanwha puts its share of that agreement at $2.4 billion, its largest contract for the K9.
Poland is one of nine countries alongside South Korea, Turkey, Finland, India, Norway, Estonia, Australia and Egypt to buy the howitzer from Hanwha.
Lee Boo-hwan, an executive vice president of Hanwha Defenses overseas business division, says the company wants to be a long-term partner to countries that buy its weapons. To that end, it is setting up new manufacturing facilities in Australia, Egypt and Poland.
My workers are very happy to share our technology, Lee says. It is our main strategic focus to enter markets.
