The flag of the United States Army displays a blue replica of the War Office Seal set on a white field. Beneath the seal is a broad scarlet scroll bearing the inscription in white letters, “United States Army”. Beneath the scroll, in blue Hindu-Arabic numerals, is “1775”, the year in which the Continental Army was created with the appointment of General George Washington as General of the Army. All of this is on a white background.

The flag was officially adopted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 12, 1956, via Executive Order10670.

In What Order Should You Display Your Military Flags With Other Flags

Whether they are being marched in a parade or flown outside a home or Government building, there is a specific order in which all flags must be displayed.

According to the Department of Defense guidelines, the order of precedence for flag display is as follows:

• First: The Flag of the United States of America. If displayed with other flags, the American Flag should always be larger than the other flags or relatively the same size as the largest flag. If the flags are displayed together on poles or display stands, the American flag should always be flown higher than the other flags or displayed on the right
• Second: State Flags are flown in alphabetical order
• Third: Military Flags are flown in order of establishment: Army Flag, Marine Corps Flag, Navy Flag, Air Force Flag, and Coast Guard Flag.
• Fourth: Other flags representing municipalities, cities, organizations, etc.

Military Flags And Their Meanings

The Marine Corps flag is scarlet in color with the Marine Corps emblem, and features a globe intersected by a fouled anchor in grey and gold. Atop the globe sits the American bald eagle with the Latin inscription Semper Fidelis on a ribbon extending from his beak. Below the image is a scroll with the words United States Marine Corps.

It is believed that components of the emblem were all armed forces symbols or ornaments worn by the Continental Marines as early as 1776. Combined, they represent pride, honor, integrity, bravery, and tradition. The current design of the Marine Corps flag has been in use since 1939.

Navy Flag

The seal of the U.S. Navy symbolizes support of the shore as well as amphibious strike capabilities. It depicts a bald eagle with outspread wings atop an anchor protecting a ship at sea and is at the center of the Navy Flag.

This seal has been in use since 1951 and was integrated into the Navy flag in 1953. The seal is surrounded by a circular rope and below is a yellow scroll bearing the words United States Navy. Interestingly, the official Navy Flag is not to fly from any vessels. It is only flown during parades, ceremonies, and official public gatherings with Naval personnel present.

Air Force Flag

The Air Force Flag was first adopted in 1951 by President Truman and has remained unchanged since.

Why Are Flags At Half

The American flag is flying at half-mast at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings, military bases, warships and embassies in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Britain’s longest reigning monarch passed away on Thursday aged 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, having reigned for 70 years. She has been succeeded by her 73-year-old son King Charles III.

As a tribute to the late Queen, who met 13 out of the last 14 U.S. Presidents with the exception of Lyndon B. Johnson, President Joe Biden ordered the U.S. flag to fly at half-mast until her funeral is over.

In a statement published by the White House he said: “As a mark of respect for the memory of Queen Elizabeth II, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on the day of interment.

“I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

In 1860, The United States Army Signal Corps was put together under the direction of Albert Meyer who served as the Chief Signal Officer. Meyer understood the significance of communication throughout battle to give commanders and soldiers a way to send signals and orders from a distance. In its early form, this type of communication was referred to as the wig wag system. Using only one flag instead of two, the wig wag used the left, right and forward motions to represent the numbers one, two and three. These numerical combinations could then be translated to convey a message.

These techniques have been utilized by the US since the Civil War to signal a variety of messages. Today, they have evolved into a combination of various flag types and uses. These flags include:
