Four Soldiers from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command earned the Expert Medical Field Badge following a grueling three-week competition last month at Fort A.P. Hill, in Virginia. Of the 11 total USAMRDC Soldiers who participated in the event, Capt. Derrick Ball , Staff Sgt. Mario Kinoshita , Sgt. Harling Creso-Cruz , and Sgt. Ibrahim Toure achieved the honor.
“I’ve done a lot in my time in the military but this was something that, when I switched over to the medical side, this was a goal line,” said Ball, who previously served with the 75th Ranger Regiment before joining the Army Medical Department in 2016. “I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity for several years now.”
“When I go do something, I’m going to try my hardest to do it,” said Kinoshita. “I went in there with the mindset of, ‘Hey, I can’t really say anything about this event if I don’t go and try it out first.'”
For both Kinoshita and Ball, the achievement carries an extra dose of significance given their respective family and individual histories. Kinoshita’s stepfather is also a recipient of the EFMB, having won the award during his own military service career. Ball himself is a winner of the Expert Infantryman Badge from his service with the Rangers, meaning the EFMB represents high-level achievement across the entirety of his 17-year Army career.

United States Army Expert Field Medical Badge
Awarded for Completion of all Expert Field Medical Badge requirements.
The Expert Field Medical Badge is a United States Army special skills badge first created on June 18, 1965. This badge is the non-combat equivalent of the Combat Medical Badge and is awarded to U.S. military personnel and North Atlantic Treaty Organization military personnel who successfully complete a set of qualification tests, including both written and performance portions. The EFMB is known for its adherence to its testing standards and, as such, requires strict attention to detail from candidates in order to receive a “GO” on its combat testing lanes. The pass rate for FY 2017 was 18%, making the EFMB one of the most difficult and prestigious Army special skill badges to earn.
Any Military Occupational Specialty may attempt to earn the badge. However, the wear of the badge is only authorized when a service member is currently serving or has served in a medical-series MOS during the time that the service member earned it. The infantry equivalent of the Expert Field Medical Badge is the Expert Infantryman Badge . The MOS 18D Special Forces Medical Sergeant, are only authorized to earn the EFMB as an expert skill badge, and they are not authorized to earn the EIB, but are authorized to wear the CIB if awarded.
