What You Need To Know About The Va Burial Allowance

For eligible veterans who have died, the Department of Veterans Affairs provides a burial allowance based on the amount authorized by law. VA may also provide additional benefits for burials, plots, and/or transportation expenses. burial and funeral expenses are generally covered by the VA on a reimbursement basis, and survivors must submit receipts in order for VA to pay the maximum amount permitted by law. Military funeral honors and memorial items can be given to the veterans buried in private cemeteries. In the case of a Veteran who dies while on active duty, the military may provide free caskets to the Veterans family. Goods and services provided by funeral homes or cremation providers are not covered by the VA and must be paid for privately.

How Much Does It Pay

Service connected death: If the Veteran died on or after September 11, 2001, the maximum service-connected burial allowance is $2000. If the Veteran died before September 11, 2001, the maximum service-connected burial allowance is $1500. If the Veteran is buried in a VA national cemetery, VA may reimburse some or all of the cost of transporting the deceased Veterans remains.

Military Funeral Honors Eligibility

  • Military members on active duty or in the selected reserve.
  • Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the reserves and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.

What Va Benefits Is A Widow Entitled To

The program provides lifetime benefits ranging from about $1,280 a month to $2,940 a month to eligible surviving spouses, depending on the deceased veterans pay grade. Additional payments are available for dependent children. Some parents of deceased veterans also may get benefits if their income is low.

However, survivors may be entitled to a different type of benefit called Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.

Fact : Presidential Memorial Certificates Must Be Requested

Initiated in March 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, the Presidential Memorial Certificate program provides an engraved paper certificate to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans. Certificates are signed by the current president.

Starting in 2020, one certificate will be automatically presented to a veterans next of kin if the veteran is interred in a national cemetery. Certificates for eligible veterans who are buried in private cemeteries and additional certificates are available to family members and close friends by request.

Certificates can be requested by filling out VA Form 40-0247 and sending it along with copies of the veterans discharge documentation and death certificate to the address on the form.

Burial benefits provided by the VA come in several different forms. Veterans and their surviving families may be eligible for monetary benefits, honorary recognitions, and specific funeral goods and/or services. However, its important to understand that all these benefits combined still may not cover the total cost of a veterans final arrangements.

Both active and former members of the military should be dressed in their Class-A uniform which is commonly referred to as a Dress Uniform. A military funeral is not the time to wear your military mess dress. Civilians are expected to dress in formal attire much like you would if you were attending a church service.

Even if you decide on a private cemetery, you can apply for many benefits and programs covering some funeral costs. These benefits may cover cremation or traditional burial. You may receive benefits as a family member or veteran, depending on the veterans qualifications.

Benefits for honorably discharged veterans families include:

What Happens During A Committal Service For A Veteran Or Service Member

Theyll lead you, and others who are gathered to honor the deceased, to a committal shelter. The committal service takes place at this location, not at the gravesite, and lasts for about 20 minutes. Note: Please be aware that viewing facilities arent available at national cemeteries, and the family must arrange for funeral services at a different location.

The family may choose to have readings by a friend, family member, or member of the clergy of their faith. They may also request to have military funeral honors performed at the committal shelter. The VA, upon request and at no charge to the applicant, will furnish an upright headstone or flat marker for the grave of any deceased eligible veteran in any cemetery around the world. Upright headstones are available in granite and marble, and flat markers are available in granite, marble and bronze.

Transportation Of Retirees Remains

Retirees who die while in a military hospital in the U.S. are authorized transportation of remains from the place of death to the place of burial, providing the place of burial is no further than the retiree’s last residence.

When the place of death and place of burial are local to the residence, transportation is authorized for the removal of the remains from the place of death to a local funeral home and from the local funeral home to a local cemetery.

Transportation of remains of eligible family members of retirees who die in a U.S. military hospital is also authorized. The installation mortuary officer at the place of death should be consulted for details.

Remains of retirees are authorized transportation of remains from overseas to the United States on U.S. military aircraft on a reimbursable or space available basis.

Retirees who die in a VA hospital or nursing home may be eligible for transportation of remains by VA. The local VA office should be contacted for eligibility rules.

Neither the VA nor the individual branches of the military provide free caskets for deceased veterans unless death occurs while they are on active duty. Goods and services purchased from funeral homes or cremation providers are not covered by the VA and must be paid for privately. However, some funeral homes offer caskets and other funeral goods and services at discounted prices to members of veterans organizations like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars .

This means about 58 percent of veterans did not receive any burial benefit.

How Much Is The Va Veteran Burial Benefit

The amount of the burial allowance reimbursement depends on when, how, and where the veteran passed away. If the person passed away in any way related to service, then the reimbursement is up to $2,000. Note that a service-related death is not the same as dying in combat. A service member did not have to pass away during active service or in combat for his or her passing to be related to service.

If the person passed away in a non-service-related manner, then the reimbursement is up to $300. The exception is a non-service-related death that occurs while the veteran is admitted to a VA hospital, in which case the amount is up to $749.

How To Arrange Military Funeral Honors

To arrange Military Funeral Honors, contact your local funeral home. Upon request of the next of kin or authorized representative, the funeral director requests the honors from the Military Service in which the veteran served. The Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration cemetery staff can also assist with arranging Military Funeral Honors at VA national cemeteries. When military funeral honors at a national cemetery are desired, they are arranged prior to the committal service by the funeral home.

Fact : A Veterans Next Of Kin Must Request A Burial Flag

A United States flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of an eligible veteran. Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin, and only one flag may be provided per deceased veteran. An Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes must be submitted along with a copy of the veterans discharge papers. Flags may be obtained from VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices. The funeral home handling a veterans affairs should also be able to assist with obtaining a flag. However, burial flags are typically provided at burial ceremonies in national, state and military post cemeteries.

What Veteran Burial Benefits Can Help Families

The VA provides burial benefits to eligible veterans to help cover the expense of cremation or a funeral. The VA doesnt pay the money directly to any provider the benefit is provided as a reimbursement. That means families must first pay for the cost of cremation or burial and then submit a request along with receipts. It can take up to six months for the VA to process these requests and for the family to receive the reimbursement check.

Families can submit an application/request for these benefits online or by submitting a VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Allowance, to a local VA office.
