What To Expect In A Military Science Program

Military science programs combine physical activity, classroom learning, and individual and group projects as part of a comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum. Enrollees study coursework in military history, political science, technical communication, and social and behavioral sciences theory. Lectures and assignments accompany projects and presentations for students to apply coursework individually and with teams.

While Reserve Officer Training Corps isn’t always part of a military science degree, students may still participate in military-like exercises such as obstacle courses, rappelling, rafting, and running. Four What Is The Military Ranking System

Joining the Military at 30 with a College Degree

The military as a whole operates under a ranking system, and military nursing is no exception.

Rank structure determines pay grade and responsibilities based on your level of experience. Upon becoming a military nurse, you start as an Officer with the lowest pay grade O-1 . With further experience, specialty training, or education, your pay grade and rank climb up.

The military ranking is important because it directly equates to pay scale. The pay grade which is part of the pay ranking is composed of two characters the first one is a letter and the second one is a number. The first character of the pay grade is always the letter O capitalized. It is pronounced “oh”. The O stands for Officer. The second character is always a number and corresponds to the current rank the officer or nurse is currently at. So, an O-1 is the lowest pay grade in the officer corps. The highest pay grade in the military is an O-10 and corresponds to the highest-ranking officer in that respective military service.

For example, as a military nurse in the Army, you would start as Second Lieutenant, then First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and so on. With each earned rank, different responsibilities and higher pay grades are awarded.

    What Is The Us Army

The U.S. Army is one of six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a strategic instrument of national policy that has served our country well in peace and war for more than two centuries. Soldiers enable America to fulfill its world leadership responsibilities of safeguarding our national interests, preventing global calamity and making the world a safer place. We do this by finding peaceful solutions to the frictions between nation states, addressing the problems of human suffering and, when required, fighting and winning our nation’s wars — our nonnegotiable contract with the American people.

    Moral And Ethical Training

Moral and ethical development occurs throughout the entirety of the cadet experience by living under the honor code and through formal leadership programs available at the academy. These include instruction in the values of the military profession through Professional Military Ethics Education , voluntary religious programs, interaction with staff and faculty role models, and an extensive guest-speaker program. The foundation of the ethical code at West Point is found in the academy’s motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.”

West Point’s Cadet Honor Code reads simply that: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Cadets accused of violating the Honor Code face an investigative and hearing process. If they are found guilty by a jury of their peers, they face severe consequences ranging from being “turned back” to separation from the academy. Cadets previously enforced collective censure by an unofficial sanction known as “silencing” by not speaking to cadets accused of violating the honor code, but the practice ended in 1973 after national scrutiny.

Although the academy’s honor code is well known and has been influential for many other colleges and universities, the academy has experienced several significant violations. For example, 151 junior cadets were found guilty of “violating the honor code” in their exams in 1976. In 2020, more than 70 cadets were also accused of cheating on exams.
