If your weight exceeds the maximum limit provided for by the U.S. Army, then the MEPS officials may opt to carry out body fat percentage tests before giving you the go-ahead to be a recruit.
How Does The Military Tape Test Work
The Department of Defense requires that all military officers have to be accessed with the standard tape test at least every six months to make sure that they keep their proper health status. The parts that will be measured are the abdomen and neck for males and waist, neck, and hips for females.
For both men and women, the neck measurement will be abstracted from the other proportions in an equation. This equation is typically designed to decide their circumference value. After that, they will compare those results against the height measurements using the charts created by the Pentagon. As a result, your body fat percentage will be determined.
For more details, you can see at the following table in which the present military body mass policy obliges all the soldier officers to keep body fat levels.

Measuring Guideline For Male
The first proportion you need to compute is your neck. Follow these steps to ensure you calculate it precisely.
- Firstly, look straight ahead. Rest your shoulders without bending them back.
- Then place the measuring tape below your Adams apple. This point of men is more apparent than women.
- Put the tape even and pull it around your neck. Make sure it wraps the neck circumference.
- Note the result. You should round the value up to the nearest half-inch. For example, if your neck circumference measures 16.7 inches, then you should write down 17 inches.
Your abdomen is usually seen to be the part containing the highest amounts of body fat. Therefore, it is very important for you to measure this part. You should not wear your shirt when doing this for the most accurate result. Also, dont let the tape compress your soft tissue when wrapping it around your waist.
- Firstly, wrap the tape around your abdomen at the navel.
- It is better to ask someone else to do this while keeping your arms hanging at your sides.
- Just inhale and exhale as normal.
- Then write down the waist measurement.
Since your height affects your body fat percentage, you also need to compute it. Just follow these guidelines for more accurate results.

How Does This Army Body Fat Calculator Work
This is a weight tool designed to assess the fat value of an individual based on the personal measures of height, neck and waist but also on the age and gender.
It evaluates body fat and determines whether you meet the criteria in the US army recruitment standard, the compliance with the standard after enrolling into Army or the compliance with the more exigent body fat percentage requested by the Department of Defense.
According to the Army Regulation 40-501 Standards of Medical Fitness, released August 4th 2011, the maximum body fat percentage allowable is different when joining than after entry, meaning that after being enroled the requirements are stricter:
When joining the army the max. allowable body fat % is: | After entry the max. allowable body fat % is: | |
Age | ||
26% | 36% |
The body fat percentage standard required by the Department of Defense is 18% in case of males and 26% in case of females.
Please note that the maximum allowable body fat percentage standards after entry kept the same in the Army Regulation 600-9, dated June 2013.
The algorithm behind this army body fat calculator is based on the body fat percentage formula from the U.S. Army Regulations Standards – Army Regulation 600-9, released June 2013, which is gender specific:
Male % body fat = – + 36.76
Female % body fat = – – 78.387
In regard to the complicancy status displayed in the results area, this calculator uses an adapted version of the regulations released publicly:

B3 Description Of Circumference Sites And Their Anatomical Landmarks And Technique

a. All circumference measurements will be taken three times and recorded to the nearest 12-inch . Each sequential measurement will be within 12 inch of the next or previous measurement. If the measurements are within 12 inch of each other, derive a mathematical average to the nearest 12 of an inch. If the measurements differ by 12 inch or more continue measurements until you obtain three measures within 12 inch of each other. Then average the three closest measures.
b. Each set of measurements will be completed sequentially to discourage assumption of repeated measurement readings. For males, complete 1 set of abdomen and neck measurements, NOT three abdomen circumferences followed by three neck circumferences. Continue the process by measuring the abdomen and neck in series until you have three sets of measurements. For females, complete one set of neck, waist , and hip measurements, NOT 3 neck followed by three waist , and so on. Continue the process by measuring neck, waist , and hip series until you have 3 sets of measurements.
c. Sample worksheets and instructions for computing body fat are at figures B1 and B2 and figures B3 and B4 . Percent fat estimates are show in figures B5 and B6 .
d. Illustrations of each tape measurement are at figures B7 and figure B8 . A training videotape is also available at Visual Information Libraries and/or Training Audiovisual Support Centers.

Goodbye Tape Test The Army Is Reviewing Body Composition Assessments Standards
The Army has launched a review of its body fat standards in a high-tech study that aims to understand the relationship between height, weight, fat and fitness.
The research study, which began Monday at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, uses body scans and low-dose X-rays, in addition to the dreaded “tape test,” and compares the measurements with fitness test results to assess soldiers’ physical fitness and readiness.
The study is important, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston said Tuesday, to determine whether new technologies are more effective than the 30-year-old tape test to measure body fat composition and assess soldiers’ overall health.
“The really came from an outpouring of soldiers at just about every stop I’ve had who want to know about the and then they want to know if we’re going to do something about height and weight standards,” Grinston told reporters during a roundtable from Fort Bragg on Tuesday.

Most U.S. troops must meet certain height and weight requirements, depending on their branch of service. If service members are close to or over their maximum weight allowance for their height, they face being measured for body fat percentage with a measuring tape.
Men are taped at their neck and waist, while women are measured at the neck, waist and hips, and the numbers are then crunched to determine body fat percentage.
The four measurements include:

Weight Charts And Body Fat Measurements
Having a job in the United States Armed Forces requires the applicants, recruits, and active duty / reservists to meet certain standards of fitness and health. Part of the health screening is to measure your height and weight and if that does not meet the standards within the Army, you will have a secondary measurement of the Tape Test – using a tape measure on the waist and neck.
U.S. Army soldiers are subject to physical demands. As a result, the Army has promulgated weight and body fat standards to make sure individual soldiers are in shape to meet the challenges of Army service.
The body fat standards replaced the Army’s weight requirement in 2013. They are designed to account for soldiers who are heavier than allowed by Army weight tables, but who have low levels of body fat. The standards apply only to soldiers who already are part of the U.S. Army. New recruits have different standards.

The Impact On The Health Care System
Another way to assess the impact of body-fat standards on the military is to estimate their cost to the health care system. In 1998, according to the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database , active duty personnel made 9.1 million visits to ambulatory care clinics. Just over 40,000 of those visits were for a primary diagnosis of obesity or localized adiposity. An additional 2,700 visits were for a primary diagnosis of anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorder. That is, less than one-half of 1 percent of all ambulatory visits made by active duty personnel were recorded as being primarily for concerns about body weight, body composition, or dysfunctional weight-loss practices. A different approach was reported by Robbins and colleagues , who examined anthropometrics, demographics, and health behaviors of 4,974 active duty Air Force men and women. This analysis found that more than 20 percent exceeded their maximum allowable weights and that this was associated with an increased cost of $22.8 million per year for medical care and lost workdays . Unfortunately, the statistics on visits to military clinics for weight-related matters do not provide a complete picture. Military personnel are likely to enroll in commercial weight-reduction programs or to self-treat with supplements or over-the-counter medications rather than call attention to their weight, which invites possible disciplinary action or separation from the service with loss of benefits.
