Soldiers Help Wwii Vet Celebrate 102nd Birthday
Retired Lt. Col. Harry Baker, a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, got a little help from the Army as he celebrated his 102nd birthday.
Baker, of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, turned 102 on Oct. 9. In 1944, as a young soldier, he trained with the 76th Division at what was then known as Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. His daughter, Coey Podraza, reached out to officials at whats now known as Fort McCoy about her fathers birthday.
Officials quickly sprang into action.
Our office reached out to Fort McCoy garrison organizations and tenant units to see if they would help in wishing Lt. Col. Baker a happy 102nd birthday and they did, said Kaleen Holliday, a spokeswoman for Fort McCoy. Videos were collected and compiled by Greg Mason at the Fort McCoy Multimedia-Visual Information Office and made into a great birthday video for him.
The video they created had almost 14 minutes of birthday wishes, and it included a video tour of Fort McCoy, according to an Army news release.
Baker, who was at Camp McCoy between 1943 and 1944, trained with artillery with the 76th Division. He served as an artillery officer and fought in the Battle of the Bulge with Gen. George Pattons 3rd Army.
As he turned to harder memories of the war during his interview with the Fort McCoy public affairs office, Baker described how theres nothing very fond when youre preparing for war.
Podraza expressed her gratitude for Fort McCoys help in celebrating her fathers birthday.

Alexandria County District Of Columbia
The area that now contains almost all of Arlington County was ceded to the new United States federal government by Virginia, along with most of what is now the city of Alexandria. With the passage of the in 1790, approved a new permanent capital to be located on the , the exact area to be selected by U.S. President . The Residence Act originally only allowed the President to select a location within Maryland as far east as what is now the . However, President Washington shifted the federal territory’s borders to the southeast in order to include the existing town of Alexandria at the District’s southern tip.
In 1791, Congress, at Washington’s request, amended the Residence Act to approve the new site, including the territory ceded by Virginia. However, this amendment to the Residence Act specifically prohibited the “erection of the public buildings otherwise than on the Maryland side of the River Potomac.”
As permitted by the , the initial shape of the federal district was a square, measuring 10 miles on each side, totaling 100 square miles . During 179192, and several assistants placed at every mile point. Fourteen of these markers were in Virginia and many of the stones are still standing.
In 1852, the Virginia legislature voted to incorporate a portion of Alexandria County to make the City of Alexandria, which until then had been administered only as an unincorporated town within the political boundaries of Alexandria County.

Our primary mission is to work in support of AUSA national initiatives to advance community awareness and serve as a voice for our Active, Army Guard & US Army Reserve members, retirees, Department of the Army Civilians and their families. We accomplish this through education and by promoting local understating of Army issues, activities, and the importance of maintaining a strong and ready Army for national security. Our primary local service programs include deployment, remobilization and reintegration support to our Active, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers, and their families, and veterans/retirees, as well as, Wounded Warrior programs support.
As Membership is the Key to success, we strive to increase our Corporate and Individual membership and ensure that our members are well served by and informed about our Chapter activities. To ensure we are able to support our service programs we host social events, an annual Golf Tournament, and various other fundraisers through the year. To foster involvement and camaraderie within our organization we hold monthly meetings and host a minimum of three general membership meetings annually.

Ausa Sofex Pavilion Features 27 Companies
The USA Security and Defense Pavilion at the 2022 Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference in Jordan opens Nov. 1 for events that include presentations by U.S. and defense industry leaders.
Organized by the Association of the U.S. Army, this years USA Pavilion features 27 companies and covers more than 550 square meters.
The 2022 Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference, also known as SOFEX, is the 13th edition of the event. It will feature more than 300 exhibitors from 38 countries and more than 13 international pavilions, and more than 400 military delegations representing more than 100 countries.
Up to 15,000 people are expected to attend this years SOFEX, which officially kicked off Oct. 31 with the Middle East Special Operations Commanders Conference featuring senior leader panels and high-level lectures on topics such as emerging threats, artificial intelligence in modern warfare and cyber capabilities.
On Nov. 1, SOFEX will launch three days of exhibitions at the Aqaba Gate Aviation at the King Hussein International Airport, the first time the event is being held in this location. Previously, SOFEX was held in Amman.
Founded in 1996 by Jordans King Abdullah II, this years SOFEX will run through Nov. 3.
AUSA will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the USA Pavilion on Nov. 1. At the pavilion, the Army will display the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, the RQ-11 Raven unmanned aerial vehicle and other equipment.
