Army’s New Dress Uniform

Jacket Or Outer Shirt

New Army uniforms a nod to World War II

The newer tan camouflaged Army Combat uniforms and the more traditional green camouflaged Army uniforms all have to be worn the same way.

They must be buttoned or zipped all the way up to the top of the chest with only a very slight portion of the undershirt showing.

The Army has a drawing demonstrating how a cold-weather coat / field jacket should look, see below:

For the traditional green camouflaged Army uniforms, the standard t-shirt color is called tan.

Even though its actually more of a greenish/light brown color in appearance.

For the newer tan camouflaged uniforms, the designated t-shirt color is called sand.

This is a very light-colored tannish t-shirt.

No: Warm Weather Service Dress

Issued to officers on first posting to a warm-weather area: the uniform is similar to No.2 dress but made in a light khaki shade defined in Section 01.87 of the Army Dress Regulations as “stone”.

When officers are taking part in parades and formations with other ranks in warm weather areas, they wear either No.3 or No.6 dress.

There had been an Other Ranks pattern of warm weather Service Dress, but this fell out of use after the 1950s.

In Picking New Dress Uniform Army Does An About

The United States Army wanted a spiffy new service uniform, one that would stand out in a tough recruiting environment and polish the Armys image after a generation of grinding and divisive wars.

So it turned the clock back. Way back.

It chose a new uniform that looks almost exactly like the old green gabardine wool field coat and khaki trousers that officers wore in World War II. Probably not by coincidence, that is what the Army was wearing the last time the nation celebrated total victory in a major war.

We went back and asked, when is the most prominent time when the Armys service to our nation was universally recognized, and the answer came very quickly, said Daniel A. Dailey, the sergeant major of the Army, the highest-ranking enlisted soldier in the service. That victory, that impact on the nation, is still felt today by the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of the Greatest Generation.

The troops who beat the Axis powers in the 1940s gave the service uniform, with its slightly rose-hued trousers or skirt and distinctive belted olive coat, an affectionate nickname: pinks and greens. This time around, the Army has decided to just call them Army Greens.

At a White House event for veterans in April, President Donald Trump praised the style.

The Army says that while the new service uniform will cost more than past models to make, it will also last longer, making it cost-neutral overall.

Origin Of Pinks And Greens Term

US Army Announces Adoption of Pinks and Greens Dress Uniform ...

The pinks and greens nickname for the Army uniform of World War II was a colloquial term originated by the soldiers at that time.

World War II soldiers started this nickname for the uniform because one of the sets of pants had a slightly pink hue, which was paired with a dark green coat.

The pinks and greens were worn during the Korean War as well as World War II.

Overview Of Army Dress Blues

Your Army dress blues are the uniform you wear when attending an event that requires formal attire. They consist of a long-sleeved white shirt, a black-tie , an Army blue coat, and Army blue trousers.

A beret typically accompanies the Army dress blues, but its not a requirement to wear any headgear during evening social occasions.

On your Army blue coat, its a requirement to wear an identification badge, your regimental insignia, your branch insignia, hash marks, and overseas bars, if you have them. You may also wear any unit awards, combat and skill badges, full-sized medals, and ribbons that youve earned.

Why Gao Did This Study

The total value of military uniform items for a newly enlisted service member ranges from about $1,600 to $2,400, depending on the military service. Over the course of their careers, service members must replace and maintain their uniforms.

The conference report accompanying the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 included a provision for GAO to study service members’ out-of-pocket costs for uniforms. Among other objectives, this report 1) assesses the extent to which differences exist in out-of-pocket costs for enlisted service member uniforms, by military service and by gender and 2) examines the extent to which the military services have changed uniforms over the past 10 years, and how the costs of these changes have varied by service, enlisted or officer status, and gender. GAO reviewed DOD policies and service data on uniform allowances, enlisted and officer required uniform items and their costs, and changes made to uniforms since 2010. GAO also interviewed relevant DOD officials and service organization representatives.

What About The Components And The Style Of The Uniform

The new uniform, unlike the old one, has a combat T-shirt underneath and a shirt over it. Also, unlike the older uniform, the shirt will not be tucked in.

The jacket, as the shirt is called, has angular top pockets, lower pockets with vertical openings, knife pleats at the back, a pocket on the left sleeve, a pen holder on the left forearm, and improved-quality buttons.

The trousers will be adjustable at the waist with elastic and buttons, and has a double layer at the groin.

For the caps, the girth will be adjustable, and the logo of the Army will be of better quality than earlier.

For the first time, a modified version of the uniform has been developed keeping in mind the specific requirements of lady officers and troops of the Army.

Uniforms Of The British Army

U.S Army Reintroduces Army Green Service Uniforms

The uniforms of the British Army currently exist in twelve categories ranging from ceremonial uniforms to combat dress . Uniforms in the British Army are specific to the regiment to which a soldier belongs. Full dress presents the most differentiation between units, and there are fewer regimental distinctions between ceremonial dress, service dress, barrack dress and combat dress, though a level of regimental distinction runs throughout.

Senior officers, of full colonel rank and above, do not wear a regimental uniform rather, they wear their own ‘staff uniform’ .

As a rule, the same basic design and colour of uniform is worn by all ranks of the same regiment . There are several significant uniform differences between infantry and cavalry regiments furthermore, several features of cavalry uniform were extended to those corps and regiments deemed for historical reasons to have ‘mounted status’ .

The coat is a stand-in collared service coat with front pockets and a single-breasted style at the waist. The shirts collar has a front placket with a V-neck and is collared. Ending The Pink Tax For Women

Another update from last year when Sens. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, aimed to eliminate the so-called pink tax, or the higher costs of female uniforms compared to male uniforms.

It is absurd that we are forcing service members to fork over thousands of dollars in order to pay for necessary clothing items that they wear while serving our country, Hassan said in a statement in October when introducing the bill. This disparity in uniform costs is particularly stark for women, who are in some cases paying almost twice as much for the same uniform item as their male counterparts.

The Senate bill, officially the Military Forces Assuring that Treatment of Items by Gender are Uniform and Equal across the Services Act, called for the Pentagon to review any changes to uniforms for potential differences in out-of-pocket costs between genders, and would further mandate a report on the retail costs of items for male and female officers and enlisted personnel. The bill was introduced after the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office earlier last year confirmed that female service members face higher out-of-pocket costs for uniform items than their male counterparts.

The FATIGUES Act has been referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

What Are The Different Military Uniforms

Fort Sill rolls out new Pinks and Greens uniforms

Soldiers in the US Military have both dress uniforms and combat uniforms. Service dress uniforms are the tailored uniforms worn for work on a daily basis, typically consisting of a jacket, shirt, tie and slacks for men and a jacket, shirt, tie and slacks or skirt for women. In the US Army, the dress uniform is called the Army Service Uniform. Each branch of the US Armed Forces including the Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps have a service dress uniform named after the branch. While technically part of the Department of Homeland Security as well as the US Armed Forces, the US Coast Guard also has a service uniform. Camouflage and functional features like cargo pockets typically identify the US Armed Forces combat uniforms. The Army, Air Force, and Space Force all wear the OCP camouflage and the same design of uniform. The Army call it the ACU for Army Combat Uniform, while the Air Force and Space Force simply call it the OCP Uniform. The US Marine Corps wears either MARPAT Woodland or MARPAT Desert camouflage versions of their MCCUU. The Navy has the NWU for Naval Working Uniform which is issued either in AOR-1 for desert and AOR-2 for woodland environments. The Coast Guard does not wear camouflage, instead opting for Coast Guard Navy in their ODU.

No: Warm Weather Ceremonial Uniform

No.3 dress is the warm weather equivalent of No.1 dress, worn for specified overseas stations or assignments. With the introduction of No.1 Dress in temperate regions, No. 3 Dress was adopted as the tropical equivalent during the early 1950s. It comprised an all-white cotton drill high-collared tunic, cut in a similar fashion to the No. 1 dress jacket, plus white trousers. These were worn with the coloured No.1 dress cap. No. 3 dress was typically issued temporarily, being withdrawn from units on leaving the station. This order of dress dates back to white drill uniforms worn for “hot-weather” ceremonial and off-duty wear in India prior to World War I.

Since the 1970s this order has consisted of the same white tunic but is now worn with coloured No. 1 dress trousers. Head-dress, footwear and badges are generally as for No. 1 dress. Widely worn during the 1950s and 1960s this uniform is now usually restricted to military attachés in tropical postings and their personal staffs units of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and The Royal Bermuda Regiment plus a few army bands and officers of the battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles stationed in Brunei.

How Is The New Uniform Different From The Armys Old Uniform

The main changes in the new uniform, compared to the old one that has been in use since 2008, are with regard to the camouflage pattern, design, and the use of a new material.

While the new unique camouflage pattern retains the combination of the same colours olive green and earthen shades the pattern is digital now. It has been designed keeping in mind the many kinds of operational conditions that the soldiers function in, from deserts to high-altitude areas, jungles and plains.

New Army Service Uniform Will Be Issued To Recruits This Winter

The Armys new service uniform will be issued to incoming recruits by December and, by next spring, the World War II-styled garments should be available at Army and Air Force Exchanges across the services installations, officials involved in the rollout said Tuesday.

AAFES started issuing the new service uniforms last month to Army Recruiting College graduates at Fort Knox, Kentucky, said Col. Stephen Thomas, a project manager involved in the effort. By March 2021, most soldiers should be able to purchase the new uniforms across AAFES locations. However, the new uniforms wont become mandatory until October 2027.

Other units, like the Army Band, have also started to receive the new uniforms, and many service leaders have been wearing their new greens to public events, like congressional hearings and baseball games, for months.

In the coming weeks, the Army plans to issue the new greens to drill sergeants at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri Fort Benning, Georgia Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

The new uniforms will cost soldiers approximately $500, which includes a coat, shirt, tie, socks, trousers, belt and a garrison cap, said Daniel Koglin, an AAFES merchandise manager.

In introducing a new product, the price point is going to be a little higher, said Thomas. As we transition this program to sustainment, if you will, that price point will go down.
