Army Rangers Vs Green Beret

Green Berets Command Structure

US ARMY RANGERS VS. SPECIAL FORCES (GREEN BERETS)

The United States Army Special Forces were not officially formed until 1987.

However, there is clear evidence that many special ops units have origins that date back further even if they were not described as Green Berets.

In fact, history indicates that the principles for unconventional warfare, a hallmark of Green Berets, was formulated during the Korean War.

Army Special Forces have been in operation since the 1950s and involved in nearly every foreign conflict involving the United States.

Today, Green Berets are divided into 5 active-duty and 2 Army National Guard Special Forces Groups.

The Army assigns a specific regional focus to each Special Forces Group .

It is a priority that these groups receive intensive language and cultural training regarding the area Green Berets are sworn to protect.

Army Special Forces played a massive role in the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan during the War on Terror.

It led to the U.S. Army creating a forth battalion in each Special Forces Group at the beginning of 2012.

The command structure of Army Green Berets is complex yet you should know that groups are generally assigned to a Unified Combatant Command or a theater of operations.

What Do Green Berets Do

Green Berets are teachers of unconventional warfare.

Green Berets specialize in 5 primary missions: unconventional warfare, counterinsurgency, special reconnaissance, direct action missions, and foreign internal defense.

This can involve everything from supporting, training, and equipping foreign fighting services, to conducting reconnaissance deep behind enemy lines.

Each branch of the U.S. military requires its members to undergo rigorous physical and mental training, but within each branch there are special operations forces that require even higher levels of training and commitment. Three of these, the Navy SEALs, Army Green Berets and Army Rangers, are among the worlds most elite military units. Each group performs unique missions that require years of specialized training, making it difficult to earn membership in more than one of these forces. This is especially true for forces in different branches of the military.

There is a story that has been told in the SOF community for years. I dont believe it is factual, but there is a lot of truth in it. The story goes like this:

The new Secretary of Defense had been confirmed and was touring the Pentagon, taking briefings on the capabilities of his forces. He had a well-deserved reputation as a no-nonsense guy. After a briefing on Special Operations Forces, he was escorted to lunch by a Green Beret officer.

The Secretarys confused look did not bode well as they walked through the E ring. I understand how SOF is different from conventional forces, but the Rangers and Green Berets seem just alike to me. You have a Special Forces Tab and a Ranger Tab. Whats the difference?

They dress just alike, they are both ARSOF units, and they both have direct-action capabilities. How are they so different? It seemed the Secretary was going to force this. The next four years of Special Forces missions hinged on the new Secretarys understanding. As they walked through an area of temporary construction, the Green Beret had a flash of inspiration.

4 Key Differences Between Army Ranger vs Green Berets

Do you have what it takes to join the Army Rangers of the 75th Ranger Regiment? This light infantry unit has its roots in the 1700s under the command of frontiersman Robert Rogers. His unit was known for unconventional yet effective battle tactics, outlined by his 28 Rules of Ranging, which modern Rangers keep today.

Todays Army Rangers specialize in raids and missions deep inside enemy territory. They receive some of the best training and opportunities the Army can provide, making the Rangers a great long-term military career choice.

To be considered for the 75th Ranger Regiment, enlisted soldiers must:

  • Be physically fit
  • Be able to get a secret clearance
  • Have a General Technical Score of at least 106 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery

For a complete list of basic qualifications for both enlisted members and officers as well as the current Ranger-supported military occupational specialties, see the Army Rangers official website.

Qualified enlisted soldiers must also pass the Ranger Assessment and Selection. The RASP involves physical fitness and first responder tests. It also teaches new skills like combat driving and explosives. Finally, all future Rangers attend the Army Ranger School.

Difference #: Command Structure

The command structure may not seem like a big deal when considering Green Berets vs. Delta Force yet it actually plays an integral role.

While both special forces technically operate under the United States Army they are both structured differently.

Even if the command structure may not matter until you join special ops, it does help to know how it impacts funding.

Delta Force is considered a Tier 1 special missions unit which grants it some of the best funding of any military group.

Therefore, Delta Force is fantastically well-funded despite having fewer members compared to Army Green Berets.

Lets examine some of the crucial differences between the two special forces:

The Us Army Rangers Arent Special Operations Forces

The short and sweet answer is that U.S. Army Rangers arent considered Special Forces because Rangers arent Special Forces. Neither are Navy SEALs or for that matter. Far too often, Special Forces are used as a catch-all term for any and all Special Operations Forces . This application of the term is a misnomer as Special Forces is a specific reference to U.S. Army Special Forces, a.k.a the Green Berets. So because Rangers arent special forces because they arent Green Berets. Think of it this way everyone in Special Forces is a member of the SOF community, but not everyone in the SOF community is Special Forces.

With all that out of the way, the U.S. Army Rangers are considered part of the SOF community they are under the jurisdiction USSOCOM and USASOC. However, to your point, they dont have quite the same mystique as Green Berets or Delta Force.

The 75th Ranger Regiment is a Special Operations Force, but they are not considered Special Forces because that term in the United States Army refers to units with a different, and specific purpose that perform other missions besides those of the Ranger Regiment.

Delta/CAG/whatever theyve changed their name to this week for OPSEC purposes are an outgrowth of Special Forces and are technically a Special Forces unit.

The Ranger Regiment is the big stick of the Special Operations community and is tasked primarily with Direct Action missionsshooting bad guys and breaking or stealing their stuff or territory.

The Special Relationship Between Green Berets & Jfk

Snake Deal

President John F. Kennedy played a key role in the history of the Green Berets, and is a particular hero of the Army Special Forces. In 1961, when President Kennedy was preparing to travel to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he sent word to Brigadier General William Yarborough for all Army Special Forces soldiers to wear their green berets for his visit. In advance of the visit, the U.S. Army officially authorized the beret as part of the Special Forces uniform, and Yarborough greeted the president wearing his own green beret. Kennedy continued his support for the Special Forces in 1962, calling the green beret a symbol of excellence, a badge of courage, a mark of distinction in the fight for freedom.

Within hours after the presidents untimely passing, Jackie Kennedy requested that Green Berets participate in the Honor Guard for his funeral. The Special Warfare Center immediately published orders for forty-six Green Berets to travel to Washington, DC on the following day. To this day, Army Special Forces lay a wreath and a green beret on the late presidents grave every November 22, the anniversary of his 1963 assassination. The Fort Bragg John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center is named in his honor.

Sir, humor me here lets do a little demonstration. Rangers are highly aggressive. They pride themselves on their toughness and discipline. They follow orders without question. Do you see that huge soldier with a tan beret? He is a Ranger.

As the Ranger approached, the Green Beret called out, Hey, Ranger! Come here.

A man-sized breach would be fine.

“Rangers Lead the Way” isn’t just a motto it’s a fact. Each Ranger battalion is capable of deploying anywhere in the world with only 18 hours notice. Rangers are part of a highly trained and rapidly deployable light infantry force with specialized skills that enable it to engage a variety of conventional and Special Operations targets.

The Rangers’ primary mission is to engage the enemy in close combat and direct-fire battles. This mission includes direct-action operations, raids, personnel and special equipment recovery in addition to conventional or special light-infantry operations.

Becoming a Ranger requires completing one of the toughest military training schools in the world. Ranger candidates train to exhaustion, pushing the limits of their minds and bodies.
