Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

The Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for the Royal Navy is awarded to personnel in recognition of long service. The regulations were updated on 1 October 2016.

To qualify, you must have:

• 15 years reckonable service in the Navy
• a clear record with no misconduct for at least the last 15 years
• been serving on or after 29 July 2014, if youre an officer
• been serving on or after 1 October 2016, if youre an other rank
• have all 3 conduct badges with character judged no lower than very good

You dont need to apply if youre currently serving. The MOD medals office is currently processing applications. Talk to your unit HR or go to 2016DIN09-023 or JSP 761 for more information.

If you have a disciplinary entry on your record, you will need to wait 15 years from the date of your last offence before you will be eligible again. You should apply through your unit HR.

If you have been discharged and are eligible you should apply to the MOD Medal Office.

For every additional 10 years service with a clear record youll be issued a clasp. For example, if you qualify and have served 26 years you will receive the medal and clasp.

Operational Service Medal Afghanistan

The Operational Service Medal Afghanistan is awarded to personnel who complete operational service on or in support of, operations in Afghanistan from 11 September 2001.

Youll automatically receive the medal if youre currently serving and have deployed on a current operation, you dont need to apply. If you have not received your medal and think you might be entitled, speak to your Unit HR.

• served under the command of the UK Joint Task Force Commander
• 30 days continuous service or 45 days aggregated service
• served in either Zone 1 or Zone 2

Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal

First created in 1962 with retroactive presentation to 1958, it remained an active decoration in the U.S. Navy until its discontinuation in 2014.

The Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal was considered the enlisted successor award to the previous Naval Reserve Medal. From 1958 until 1996, the medal was awarded for four years of satisfactory enlisted reserve service as a drilling reservist in the Selected Reserve or Individual Ready Reserve , to include Volunteer Training Units .

Full-time active duty enlisted personnel in the Naval Reserve’s Training and Administration of the Reserve Program Program), while also eligible for the Naval Reserve Medal, were not eligible for the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal and were awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal on par with active duty Regular Navy enlisted personnel.

The years of service requirement for the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal dropped from four years of service to three years of service from 1997 until its discontinuation, synchronizing it with the reduction in the required service for the active duty Navy Good Conduct Medal, which replaced it entirely pursuant to a SECNAV directive in 2014. As a result of this SECNAV directive, all enlisted sailors in both the Active Component and the Reserve Component now receive the same good conduct medal for the same period of service.

Air Force Good Conduct Medal

The Air Force Good Conduct Medal is the last version of the Good Conduct Medal. The medal was authorized by Congress on 6 July 1960, but not created until 1 June 1963. Air Force personnel were issued the Army Good Conduct Medal between 1947 and 1963 and for those serving both before and after 1963, the Army and Air Force Good Conduct Medals could be worn simultaneously on an Air Force uniform.

The Air Force version is the same as the Army version, except that the suspension and service ribbons for the medals are different for each medal. The Air Force Good Conduct Medal has remained unchanged in appearance since its original design over fifty years ago. Additional awards of the Air Force Good Conduct Medal are denoted by bronze or silver oak leaf clusters.

The criteria for award of the Air Force Good Conduct medal are as follows: It is awarded to Air Force enlisted personnel during a three-year period of active military service or for a one-year period of service during a time of war. Those airmen who were awarded this medal must have had character and efficiency ratings of excellent or higher throughout the qualifying period including time spent in attendance at service schools, and there must have been no convictions of court martial or non-judicial punishment during this period.

Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal

Soldiers who are ordered to active duty in the AGR program will be awarded the ARCAM if they have completed 2 of the 3 years required . Soldiers with less than 2 years will not receive an award. Service lost may be recovered if the Soldier is separated honorably from the AGR program and reverts to troop program unit service, for example, a Soldier serves 1 year and 6 months of qualifying service and is ordered to an AGR tour. This service is not sufficient for award of the ARCAM. When the Soldier leaves the AGR program that 1 year and 6 months is granted towards the next award of the ARCAM. Only the State Adjutant General may determine that the AGR service was not sufficiently honorable enough to revoke the previously earned time, regardless of the type of separation given.

The ARCAM, is awarded to both officer and enlisted members of the Army Reserve and has basically the same criteria as the other Reserve Services for award of a Reserve Good Conduct Medal. The AFRAM Armed Forces Reserve Medal is a similar award which is given for ten years of honorable reserve service and is presented to both officers and enlisted personnel.

The Golden Jubilee Medal was awarded to personnel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II accession.

To apply for the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal, you must:

• have been in effective service on 6 February 2002 and
• completed a minimum of 5 years reckonable service and were enlisted on or before 7 February 1997 and
• served with the regular, reserve or cadet forces.

The medal was issued unnamed.

United States Army Good Conduct Medal

Description

United States Army Good Conduct Medal. The obverse has an eagle with folded wings standing on a sword on top of a book. The inscription ‘EFFICIENCY . HONOR . FIDELITY’ around the edge. The reverse has a wreath of half palm and half laurel with ‘FOR GOOD’ over a star and blank panel, over ‘CONDUCT’ in the centre. It has a loose ring suspender and a ribbon of red that has three white stripes near each edge. A brooch pin is sewn to the ribbon.

History / Summary

The criteria for a Good Conduct Medal is defined by Executive Orders 8809, 9323, and 10444. The medal is awarded to any active-duty enlisted member of the United States military who completes three consecutive years of “honorable and faithful service”. Such service implies that a standard enlistment was completed without any non-judicial punishment, disciplinary infractions, or court martial offenses. If a service member commits an offense, the three-year mark “resets” and a service member must perform an additional three years of service without having to be disciplined, before the Good Conduct may be authorized.During times of war, the Good Conduct Medal may be awarded for one year of faithful service. The Good Conduct Medal may also be awarded posthumously, to any service member killed in the line of duty.

Discussion Over The Army Good Conduct Medal

There is often some discussion if the Army Good Conduct Medal is a decoration or service medal. Historically, going back to World War II, the Good Conduct Medal was considered a decoration and was one of a few medals to be manufactured throughout the war when service medal production was restricted due to the need to divert metal to the arms industry. Today however, it is considered a service award.

There was no certificate to denote the award of the Army Good Conduct Medal until 1981 when the Army began issuing an 8 x 10 paper certificate. The army regulations covering the issue of the paper certificate prohibited the issue of the certificate of those awarded the Good Conduct Medal prior to January 1 1981.

The Army has changed policy on official engraving of a Good Conduct Medal several times during its history. Currently the Army authorizes engraving at the governments expense by the U.S. Army Support Activity in Philadelphia, PA.

The Good Conduct Medal is especially interesting in that it is the last United States Army award established prior to World War II. It was also the last medal that the War Department attempted to issue with a serial number . It is the only United States Army medal awarded which specifically excludes officers from eligibility and is only authorized for enlisted personnel.

What Knots Look Like

Military knots are also known as loops, and the knots on the award device can be referred to as hitches. They are rectangular clasps of bronze, silver, or gold that can contain between one and five knots.

One knot represents one Good Conduct Medal, a silver clasp represents five medals, and a gold clasp represents ten.

Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal

Created in 1963 and awarded for a standard satisfactory enlisted reserve tour of three years of duty. Additional awards are denoted by service stars. This is strictly an enlisted service award on par with the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal for active duty enlisted coast guardsmen. Commissioned officers, to include warrant officers, are not eligible for award of the Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal, however, they are entitled to wear the award if it was earned during prior enlisted service.

The War Medal is awarded to all full time personnel of the armed forces wherever they were serving. The medal was granted in addition to campaign stars and the Defence Medal.

To apply for the War Medal, you must have served at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.

Where To Place Military Knots On A Uniform

Good Conduct Medal knots are worn on top of the good conduct medal itself. The clasp is attached to the medal and ribbon to denote multiple medals, rather than displaying numerous medals on the uniform.

Proper placement of the Good Conduct Medal and Army knots is below the area where a Prisoner of War Medal should be displayed and above the area where an Army Reserve Good Conduct Medal should be displayed.

The Good Conduct Medal is a Bronze medal 1 ¼ inches in diameter. It bears an American Bald Eagle standing with wings outspread on a closed book and sword enclosed by the words, “efficiency honor fidelity.” On the reverse side, a wreath consisting of a laurel branch on the left side of the medal and an oak branch on the right side encloses a five-pointed star and a scroll between the words “for good” and “conduct.” In the case of successive awards, clasps are positioned on the ribbon.

Reserve Good Conduct Medal

A Reserve Good Conduct Medal refers to any one of the five military conduct awards, four of which are currently issued and one of which was previously issued, by the United States Armed Forces to members of the Reserve and National Guard. The primary difference between the regular Good Conduct Medal and the Reserve Good Conduct Medal is that the regular Good Conduct Medal is only issued for active duty service while the reserve equivalent is bestowed for reserve duties such as drills, annual training, and additional active duty for either training or operational support to the active duty force or, in the case of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard, in support of Title 32 U.S.C. state active duty such as disaster response and relief.
